Wonderful Happenings at Wenty!
Kindergarten 2017 Parent Information Evening yesterday!
It was wonderful to meet so many new families and returning families at our two
Kindergarten Parent Information sessions yesterday. The partnership we share
with you in supporting the academic, social and emotional learning of your
children is vital! We hope to have a long and productive relationship over the
years ahead.
Our Kindergarten 2017 planning is well underway. If you haven’t yet enrolled
your pre-schooler for Kindergarten 2017 at WPS, please collect an enrolment
form from the office. You will need to bring with you originals of proof of residential
address, birth certificate and immunisation records and any visa paperwork (if required).
If you have friends living in the area who have children of school starting age you might like to let them know it
is time to sign up and enrol their children for school in 2017.
The uniform shop will be open on the orientation days for students to support families getting uniforms ready
for 2017.
Dates are:
Thursday November 17 - from 10.30am (after student 9.30-10.30am session)
Thursday November 24 - from 10.30am (after student 9.30-10.30am session)
Thursday December 1 - from 12.30 -1.30pm (before the student session at 1.30-2.30pm)
From The Principal - Denise Lockrey
Our initiative as part of our school wellbeing programs focussing on improving student attendance at school on
time in the morning is working well!
The majority of students are at school on time and in their class lines by 5 to 9 (8.55am), which is wonderful.
We encourage all students to be in their class lines, sitting down ready for the morning by the end of the music
on our bell system.
We have documented a significant reduction in late arrivals since we started the initiative in Week 1 this term.
Mrs Di Chio has last week’s ‘in the line by 5 to 9’ reward winners who had their names drawn out of the
lucky dip listed in our newsletter.
Congratulations to the following students who received a prize for being in the line by 5 to 9.

Forward planning for 2017 and class placement for 2017
We are busily planning in preparation for next year. In order to allow us to plan as effectively
as possible, we would like those families who know that they won’t be returning to the
school next year, to confirm these details as soon as possible.
I have included a slip at the end of the newsletter for you to complete and send back to the
front office if this scenario applies to you. Thank you for your anticipated co-operation with this
matter.
Class placement for 2017 is a complex task in which staff invest a lot of time and effort. Parents are welcome to
provide written information to Mrs Lockrey (The Principal) by Friday October 28, 2016 if there are specific needs
you think should be taken into consideration about your child /children when considering class placements in
2017.
Any information which is delivered to Mrs Lockrey after this date will unfortunately not be able to be considered
in class placements for 2017. Consideration to social and emotional needs, academic ability and behaviour can
be considered, but no guarantees can be made as staff make determinations which are in the best interest of
all attempting to achieve a balance in each class. It is a difficult task which teachers weigh up very carefully.
New Finance Option for parents – Parent Online Payments (POP)
With the new finance system in place, parents have an added feature of being able to pay for excursions and
school payments online via a button on the school website - http://www.wentwthvil-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/
We know that many families will benefit from this option. Please see note that is coming home via your child this
week.
Selective High School Applications
Year 5 students are invited to apply for Year 7 entry into a selective high school in 2018.
Online applications open on Tuesday 11 October, 2016 and close on Monday 14 November, 2016.
Applications can be filled out online only. Please note that no late applications will be accepted.
See Mrs Eastwood for enquiries.

Sustainability Excursion – Year 5 Reports
On 13th October, we went to a Holroyd Sustainability Expo in Central
Gardens to learn about sustainability.
We learnt about our world and new facts that many of us didn’t know.
We also learnt many interesting things such as putting teabags,
cardboard boxes etc. in the compost bin.
We got to know how much land there is for landfill, by watching a
play which was performed for us. If you are wondering how this is
possible it is possible with an apple. We first cut the apple in 4
quarters. Take away 3 quarters (3 pieces) as ¾ of our earth is
actually water, so we only have 1 piece for our living, but that’s not
how much there is for landfill. We cannot use landfill in areas like deserts, mountains, land with crops. So we
cut off as many number of pieces that we cannot use and we end up with a really small piece of apple which
represents land for landfill. Everyone who has read this would have learnt many facts already.
We had a few groups and each group did a different activity. The activities we did were NRL/Bocchi
(Paralympic-style) and learnt about environment and animals. We also had the opportunities to touch a snake,
stick insect, leaf insect & a grasshopper.
This expo was a great opportunity to learn awesome things and some of the ways we can help sustain our
environment.

My Recount
On 13/10/2016 all of us from Year 5 went to a Sustainability Expo in
the Central Gardens. There were students from a lot of other schools
there including us. We were separated in groups and had to rotate to
each workshop when the DJ played music.
The first workshop we visited was a play about landfill that showed
we don’t have much land for landfill. From the play I learned that only
1 quarter of earth island. The next workshop we went to was to do
some sport. We first played an NRL game called scramble. My
favourite part of the game was tipping people when they were trying
to get the ball past us.
Next we met a person from Holroyd City Council. He works in the disability area. He taught us how to play
Boucher. He showed us how it feels to play in a wheelchair. We then had our first break.
After the break we got to touch and hold some animals. We got to see animals like lizards, turtles, stick insects
and offcourse snakes. My favourite part was holding a stick insect. We then headed off to learn about
composting. One of the things we learned was that you have to put paper and cardboard in a compost bin.
After all that fun it was time for lunch.
Finally, it was time for our last workshop of the day. We had a chance
to learn Aboriginal singing and dancing. We learned that in a particular
Aboriginal language ichikaka means seagull. Then all the fun came to
an end. We all had plenty of fun and we reached home safely.

Sustainability Expo
On 13th October all the year fives went to Central Gardens to learn about sustainability.
We went by bus so it didn’t take that long. Firstly we
watched a play about waste, recycling and composting, We
learned that ¾ of the earth is covered in water, mountains or
desert so we don't have that much space to place houses,
shops especially landfill we also learned what we can
recycle and compost.
Then we played sport the yellow team played the modified
Paralympics game, while the orange team played NRL I was
on the yellow team. In the Paralympic game, we sat on a
chair and rolled a ball on the ramp so it would land in the
hula-hoop, in the real Paralympics the ball was called a jack
and people with wheelchairs played it. Soon it was time for
the yellow team to play NRL after NRL it was recess.
I played tips with my
friends at recess. Eventually, recess ended and it was time to look
and pet the reptiles, at the reptile place only the yellow group got to
pat the animals. We got to pat a snake, stick insect, leaf insect and
grasshopper sadly we couldn’t touch the turtle or frog. Initially, it was
time to go to the “what should I compost station” there we learned
more about composting did you know you can put vacuum cleaner
dust in the compost bin! Finally it was time for lunch. I was so hungry!
At last, it was time for our last activity I was so tired, we learned an
Aboriginal dance. After that, we got a bag with a ruler, NRL pencil
case, sticker and magnet in it.
It was a very tiring day I mainly liked getting the reptiles and the bag but I did still like everything else!
