The Gillard Labor Government is proud to say that for the first time in Australia, we willhave a law that cuts the carbon pollution that causes dangerous climate change. This is an important reform.
Cutting pollution
From 1 July 2012, Australias biggest polluterswill have to pay for every tonne of carbon
pollution they emit.
This will cut pollution by at least 160 million
tonnes a year in 2020 the equivalent of taking
45 million cars off the road.
Assisting households
More than half the revenue raised from the
carbon price will be used to assist households.
Millions of Australian households will receive
tax cuts, higher family payments or increases in
pensions, benefits and allowances.
Increases in family payments, pensions and allowances
will start with lump sum advance payments of the new
Clean Energy Supplement in May and June next year.
Supporting Jobs
Therell also be extensive support for jobs,
competitiveness and innovation in Australia,as well as extra tax relief for small business.
The $1.2 billion Clean Technology Program will assist
manufacturing investment and innovation.
Small businesses will also benefit from
the increase in the instant asset write-off
threshold to $6,500 per item.
Driving clean investment
The legislation will also give
the renewables sector a major
boost, creating the right combination of
economic incentives, business certainty
and Government support needed for new
SummaryThe Gillard Governments clean energy
future is one where companies will be more
environmentally friendly.
Its a future where Australians will get a betterdeal because clean-green choices are cheaper

EDUCATION JOBS
A new era of communications is arriving in Denison.
South Hobart has been announced as one of the firstlocations in the nation for construction of the NBN with
works scheduled to commence in late November 2011.
This is exciting news and further evidence that the NBN
is well and truly a reality, rolling out in Denison and
right across Australia.
The Gillard Labor Government is well underway in
delivering the NBN a nation-building investment that
will improve broadband services, increase competition
and pay for itself over time.
The NBN rollout in Hobart City will begin in five stages
in the second quarter of 2012, with other suburbs of

Senator Lisa Singh recently met with UTAS Vice
Chancellor Peter Rathjen and students to discuss plans
for the 770 self-contained units that will be built for
UTAS students under the Gillard Governments National

NRAS increases the supply of new affordable houses
and reducing rental costs for Australians, and also

NBN is available at www.nbn.gov.au.
In August, Senator Singh was fortunate to visit the
home of the Malano family. Thanks to NRAS, the
Malanos now live in a brand new 3-bedroom home,
with room for a vegetable garden and swing set for
their two young children. This was something they
never imagined would be possible for their family.
The Gillard Labor Government has committed to
support 50,000 NRAS properties, with up to 35,000
dwellings across the country by June 2014, and
the remaining 15,000 by June 2016. More than 900
dwellings will have been competed in Tasmania under
the scheme by 2016.

Tobacco PlainPackaging Laws
PassedThe Gillard Governments world
leading tobacco plain packaging
legislation passed through the
Senate on November 10. From 1
December 2012 all tobacco products
sold in Australia will need to be in
plain packaging.
Cigarette packets remain one of
the last marketing tools for tobacco
companies. Thanks to this historic
change,cigarettes will now be
exposed for what they are: killer
products that destroy thousands of
Australian families.
Food and Toy Drive to make aBetter Christmas
Senator Catryna Bilyk is again assisting Colony 47 with their
annual Food and Toy drive to make this Christmas brighter for
many people in the community who are less fortunate. The
donated goods are to be distributed at Colony 47s Christmas
Lunch.
Donations to this worthy cause can be made at Senator Bilyks

Office, 47 Davey Street, Hobart.
Senator Carol Brown joined the Prime Minister, Julia
Gillard, and supporters of the Glenorchy Art and
Sculpture Park (GASP) to celebrate the $2.32 million
federal funding boost announced this week.
The Glenorchy City Council received $2.32 million out
of the Federal Governments Regional Development
Australia Fund (RDAF) to complete Stage 2 of the
$15.9 million development.
A long-time supporter of GASP, Senator Carol Brownapplauded the RDAF investment saying the funding
would benefit the local community and enhance the
arts and cultural precinct emerging in the Glenorchy
community.
The Art and Sculpture Park will be a dynamic and
educational open space. Its social, environmental and
economic benefits will provide locals and visitors with
unique encounters with art, engagement with social
enterprises and memorable experiences in the naturalenvironment.

The Australian Government has rolled up its sleeves
to build the foundations for a National Disability
Insurance Scheme, entitling all Australians to support
in the event of significant disability.
This means that for those Australians with significant
disability, theyll get the kind of care and support
Australians expect for them.
It also means that any Australian who acquires a
disability or whose child is born with a disability can have
confidence that they will get the helping hand they need.
The Gillard Labor Government understands that
Establishing a National Disability Insurance Scheme
transformational reform of disability services is
needed, so we are starting work right away.
Most recently, the Gillard Labor Government asked
the states and territories to agree clear timelines for
delivering the foundations for a National Disability
Insurance Scheme.
The Commonwealth, states and territories agreed
to deliver these foundation reforms necessary for
a National Disability Insurance Scheme by mid-
2013 a year ahead of the timeline set out by the
Productivity Commission.
