R&D capabilities: Synthesis of organic compounds, compound characterization, boronic acids. Techniques and instrumentation: NMR, HPLC-MS, chiral HPLC, microwave chemistry. Examples of industrial collaborations and commercialization: Lead compound for cancer chemotherapy The imidopiperidine A12B4C3 was developed as a promising inhibitor of the DNA repair enzyme polynucleotide kinase-phosphatase, in collaboration with Prof. Michael Weinfeld (UofA Oncology) and the Centre for Drug Research and Development (Vancouver), funded by Alberta Cancer Fund, CIHR, Pfizer-CDRD Innovation Fund. This compound could lead to a more effective treatment of tumors resistant to radiotherapy. Catalyst for direct amide formation The MIBA catalyst, a boronic acid, was developed with GreenCentre Canada and licensed to Sigma-Aldrich. This catalyst facilitates the synthesis of biologically relevant amides and drastically reduces the amount of waste produced. Licensing opportunities: representative patents and invention reports: 1) Patent title: Method for the Organocatalytic Activation of Carboxylic Acids for Chemical Reactions Using Ortho-Substituted Arylboronic Acids, US patent US 8,822,720 B2, granted on Sept. 2, 2014; International PCT application CA2008/001554, filed on Jan. 21, 2010. Potential applications: Amide formation for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, etc. 2) Patent title: Small Molecule Inhibitors of Polynucleotide Kinase/Phosphatase and Uses Thereof. US provisional patent #61/184,013 (filed June 4, 2010), #61/263,711 (filed Nov. 23 2009), Int. PCT/CA2010/000846 (June 4, 2010). Potential applications: Cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy. R&D capabilities: Synthesis of organic compounds, compound characterization, boronic acids. Techniques and instrumentation: NMR, HPLC-MS, chiral HPLC, microwave chemistry. Examples of industrial collaborations and commercialization: • Lead compound for cancer chemotherapy The imidopiperidine A12B4C3 was developed as a promising inhibitor of the DNA repair enzyme polynucleotide kinase-phosphatase, in collaboration with Prof. • Catalyst for direct amide formation The MIBA catalyst, a boronic acid, was developed with GreenCentre Canada and licensed to Sigma-Aldrich. This catalyst facilitates the synthesis of biologically relevant amides and drastically reduces the amount of waste produced.   Licensing opportunities: representative patents and invention reports: 1) Patent title: Method for the Organocatalytic Activation of Carboxylic Acids for Chemical

Reactions Using Ortho-Substituted Arylboronic Acids, US patent US 8,822,720 B2, granted on Sept. 2, 2014; International PCT application CA2008/001554, filed on Jan. 21, 2010.

Potential applications: Amide formation for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, etc. 2) Patent title: Small Molecule Inhibitors of Polynucleotide Kinase/Phosphatase and Uses

Thereof. US provisional patent #61/184,013 (filed June 4, 2010), #61/263,711 (filed Nov. 23 2009), Int. PCT/CA2010/000846 (June 4, 2010).

Potential applications: Cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
