Genan is the world’s largest recycler of end-of-life tyres with 5 large recycling plants in Germany, Denmark and the USA. The technology has been developed since 1990 and the plants are highly sophisticated and fully automated. The tyres are recycled into their original components: rubber, steel and textile. The end products are uniform and clean and therefore very well suited for high quality applications. Recent life cycle assessment studies have shown that significant environmental benefits in areas like greenhouse gas emissions, acidification and cumulative energy demand are achieved if end-of-life tyres are recycled instead of incinerated or used for civil engineering purposes.

Why does bulk density matter?

Rubber infilland granulate Best choice for safe play and high performance sport

If you have infill with a low bulk density, you need less weight of material to achieve the same infill height, thus reducing transportation costs and handling as well as saving the environment. However, a low bulk density can be caused by a higher content of dust and other particles, which is undesirable. Therefore we recommend also to check that a low bulk density in an infill is not caused by this. Genan infill has a low bulk density, but only has <1% particles smaller than 0.5 mm.

Bulk density exampleA football pitch of 8,000 sqm to be filled with 30 mm granulate will need the following theoretical volume: 8,000 x 0.03 = 240 m3

What matters in bulk density?

- A low bulk density means less tonnes infill needed to achieve the same infill height

- Must be stable. This enables better planning in relation to purchase and logistics, but also gives a level surface.

- Infill must be clean and meet the standards for dust and fine particles for the area in which it is used. Genan infill has been tested by accredited labs, such as Labosport, ISA, SGS Institut Fresenius GmbH and IMAT Sport.

The 19.2 tonnes less granulate needed creates a savings on granulate purchase, transport and installation time when using Genan infill.

This volume allows the following weight comparison:

Product Bulk density(EN 1097-3)

volume x bulk density

= theoretical tons required

= 100.8 tons*

= 120.0 tons*

*

240 x 420

240 x 500

Genan Infill 420 kg per m3

Ex. of other infill 500 kg per m3

Always remember to consider the properties of the specific carpet in the calculation, e.g. fill factor and normal compaction, in order to adjust theoretical volume.

Rubber infill for artificial turf pitches: In order to obtain the best ball behavior, the size of the rubber granulate infill must not be too fine or too coarse. If the infill is too fine, it will compact and the artificial turf will not be elastic enough. If the infill is too coarse, it will absorb too much energy from the ball, resulting in a poor rebound performance. In order to meet all special requirements, Genan therefore

offers 3 different sizes of infill: Fine, Fine-mix and Medium.

Rubber granulateRubber granulate for playground, e-layer, shock pads and track applications

are offered in three fraction sizes, Medium, Coarse and Super Coarse. Here, grain size distribution is also important as it influences the performance and installation costs. A poor quality product with too much dust will require more binder to reach the same properties.

Superior propertiesOnly the very best materials are used in the production of tyres and the rubber gets a second life after high-quality recycling as infill in artificial turf pitches or as granulate in shock pads and athletic tracks.

In this way the superior characteristics such as elasticity, weather resistance and extremely good ageing properties are utilised.

Best qualityLow maintenance costs, a healthy work environment and the best properties are key to the success of any artificial turf pitch or athletic flooring installation. The end-user should have no concerns regarding health and safety and the environment should take no harm from the installation. Genan SBR rubber granulate secures this along with the documentation to prove it.

Don’t accept dust, smell and smearToo much dust and fine particles in infill causes smell and smear and has a negative impact on the working environment during installation and the players’ perception of the pitch. Although the infill plays only a minor part in the total costs of a complete artificial turf project, it is possibly one of the most important elements.

In a typical artificial turf pitch, Genan Infill and granulate can be used as infill as well as for base layer, e-layer or shock pad.

In a typical playground application, Genan granulate is used for the elastic base layer under a coloured top coat.

In a typical sports surface application, Genan granulate is used for the elastic base layer under a coloured top coat.
