General rules and classes are listed in the Expo Book. Project posters and displays, project rec-ord books, project scrapbooks and any item made in a 4-H pro-ject is eligible to enter. Exhibits from every 4-H project are ac-cepted and there is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted. Clover Kids projects are welcome too!

Hogs — Stress is not only bad for the animal and the producer’s

profits, but it also short-changes the consumer. Stress

right before slaughter can result in pale, soft pork with

greater drip loss, while long-term stress can cause

dark, firm and dry pork.

When pigs become agitated from stress, one of the first things affect-

ed is their eating habits. When pigs eat less, they convert less feed

into muscle, thus reducing average daily gain. This also opens the

door to an increased risk of health challenges and ultimately addition-

al costs.

Though stress cannot be fully avoided, it should be a goal to minimize

it as much as possible. Some quick tips to reduce stress and its ef-

fects:

Reduce instances of large swings in temperature in the barn.

Ensure each pig has enough space and ventilation.

Provide pigs with unlimited access to fresh and cool drinking water

Move and work pigs early in the day.

Tailor diets to include technologies that support pigs during stress.

Check with your vet for recommendations.

Registration for the 2017 State Shoot events is scheduled to open July 1 and will close on August 1. Regis-

tration for both the August 26-27 events and the September 16-17 events will be combined into one registra-

tion. The State Trap Shoot on August 26 and 300 Archery event on August 26-27 will be self-scheduled

again…..meaning the 4-H member will select their own times during the registration process. So, counties

that want to shoot trap together, in the same squad, need to coordinate their registration. Other events may

also be self-scheduled, so read instructions thoroughly before beginning the registration process—and during

the process. See http://4h.missouri.edu/shooting-sports-events/state-shoot .

Dent County 4-H’er Moriah Cramer joined 50 Missouri 4-H horse project teens who spent 6 days exploring the equine careers and industry in Oklahoma and Texas May 22-28 on the 11th annual 4-H Equine Tour.
