AAS Program OverviewYear 1 – Prerequisites typically take 4 to 6 terms to

complete

Year 2 – Accepted students complete 1st year core courses and dental office experience.

Year 3 – Accepted students complete 2nd year core courses and dental office experience – then they are eligible to take the licensing exams to become a dental hygienist

Bachelor Degree – OIT

Students who complete all Associate of Applied Science degree requirements have the option to continue their training through OIT Oregon Institute of Technology

Students interested in completing a Bachelor’s degree can review Section 5 in the academic advising resource for more information.

Minimum requirements to applyBe admitted to Lane as a Credit Student with an assigned

L number.

Be an Oregon Resident by date of application. Exception is for LCSC students from Idaho. LCSC information is in Section 1 of the Academic Advising Resource.

Have HOBET testing completed Jan 1 or later for the year you are applying.

All prerequisite courses completed with a letter grade of C- or higher Winter term or before - prior to planned Fall entry.

Courses completed at other institutions must be considered equivalent or substituted with an approved course.

Application timeline

Application deadline is typically mid-April for the following fall entry

Courses taken and completed during through Winter term may count toward application points.

One new class is accepted each Fall term.

Math application and program requirement

Courses considered equivalent to or higher than Lane’s MTH 052 will meet the program and application requirement

Also, MTH 052 or higher courses meet the Science prerequisite requirement for BI11/CH112

Courses equivalent to MTH 020 meet the prerequisite requirement for MTH 052.

• Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

Preparing to take Anatomy and Physiology

BI112 and CH112 courses are the prerequisite for BI 231 – the first Anatomy and Physiology course

Getting into BI 112/CH 112 – two options:

• 1. Passing parts D, E or F of the math testing sequence is required for B112/CH112

• OR

• 2. Passing MTH 052, MTH 060 or MTH 070 is required to take BI112/CH112

Anatomy and Physiology sequence

BI 231 and 232 Human Anatomy and Physiology courses are required to apply.

BI 233 the third course meets a program requirement and also is eligible for additional points in the application.

The AP courses expire after 7 years.

BI 234 Microbiology

This course must be completed by the end of the first term in the program as an accepted student.

BI 231,232&233 are the required prerequisite.

• Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

Prior college coursework

Some students may have coursework that will allow them to gain entry into the BI112/CH112 or BI 231 courses

If you have prior math or science (Biology or Chemistry) course work - take unofficial transcripts to the Science Department office or call 541-463-5446

The department representative will determine if the courses you have taken will give you access to BI 112/CH112 or BI 231.

Or, she will refer you to an instructor to evaluate if your courses can be approved for equivalency or substitution.

FN 225 Nutrition

This course meets an application and program requirement

Other FN numbered courses at Lane do not meet the requirement

Instructors recommend that this course is taken after completion of a chemistry course

Students who struggle in this course typically have not taken a chemistry course.

English Composition sequence WR 121 is required to apply.

WR 115 is the prerequisite for WR 121

WR 123 or 227 meets a program requirement and also is eligible for points in the application process.

WR 122 is the prerequisite course for WR 123.

WR 121 is the prerequisite course for WR 122, 123 or 227

• Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for

use in the application.

PSY 201, 202 or 203 General Psychology

PSY 201, 202 or 203 meet the Psychology course requirement. Only one is needed.

Students who are ready to take WR 121 or who have completed WR 115 are more likely to be successful in these courses.

PSY 201 is recommended prior to taking 202 or 203

PSY 201 is available the most in the Fall term.

One of these Psych courses is required to apply.

• Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

General Sociology SOC 204, 205 or 206 meets the Sociology course

requirement. Only one is needed.

Students who are ready to take WR 121 or who have completed WR 115 are more likely to be successful in these courses.

There is no recommended sequence.

SOC 204 is available the most in the Fall term, 205 in Winter, and 206 in Soring

One of these SOC courses is required to apply.

• Courses completed at other schools must be considered equivalent or be approved for use in the application.

Speech Course

SP 100 Basic Communication or SP 111 Public Speaking

Only one course is required to apply.

Email [email protected] if you have completed a different speech course that you believe may meet this requirement.

SP 218 - Interpersonal Communication will not meet this requirement.

Screening Test for Points

• The HOBET Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test - can be taken one time per year. Please see application for dates this is offered.

• More information about this test can be found at the Lane Placement testing website http://www.lanecc.edu/testing/placementtest.htm see HOBET test link on the left hand side.

Spanish Proficiency or Course options.

Students can earn additional application points by meeting the Spanish Proficiency criteria.

1. Complete SPAN 101 and 102 or equivalent with a pass grade or grade of C- or higher.

2. Complete with a score of 50 or higher the CLEP College Level Equivalency Placement test offered at the University of Oregon.

Students may be eligible for application points for Paid Work Experience in a Dental Office.

Please review application for specific details.

Verified 960 hours or more are eligible for points.

Competitive Criteria

Completing all prerequisite courses as listed in the application is required to apply.

The higher your grades the more points you will be eligible for in the application.

The science courses will be worth more than the rest.

A’s will be worth more than B’s and B’s will be worth more than C’s.

• Q: What kind of grades do I need to be competitive?

• A: To be competitive you need to have as strong of a GPA as possible on the prerequisites.

• Q: How many points can I earn toward the application?

• A: The points can vary each year. Total points possible is 50 - HOBET test is worth 12 points, 34 points for courses, 2 points for Spanish Proficiency and 2 points for work experience.

• A: Students are notified – mid May.

• Q: What can I expect from the HOBET test.

• A: This test covers Math and Science concepts. MTH 052 course concepts are covered and other basic math skills are covered in the test. Science questions come from general science courses.

• Q: How long is the waiting list?

• A: There is no waiting list. Students are either accepted, placed on an alternate list or not accepted.

Register early to help with your term-by-term planning and to gain access to high demand courses.
