In 2015, Dental Lifeline Network marked $300 million in services, contributed by 15,118 volunteer dentists and 3,700 laboratories through our flagship Donated Dental Services (DDS) program. These exceedingly generous dentists and labs have transformed 107,000 lives since the first DDS program began in Colorado 30 years ago.

Yet, the need among vulnerable people continues to grow, driven in part by an aging population. Last year, nearly 7,500 people with disabilities, or who are elderly or medically fragile were treated through DDS. By 2020, 11 million adults age 65 and over may need DDS services. That total does not account for those with disabilities or who require dental therapies to qualify for life-saving medical treatments.

Vulnerable people who need dental care face major obstacles. Those who depend on government assistance cannot afford care. Medicare does not include dental coverage and even in states that offer adult Medicaid benefits, it can be hard to find a dentist who accepts Medicaid. People who can work usually earn too much to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to pay for treatment or insurance.

Consequently, hundreds of thousands of people suffer daily in agonizing pain from severe dental problems and have nowhere to turn for help. We are working to stretch our resources to treat more people efficiently. Ultimately, more funding will be needed because, for many, DLN is a final safety net.

Another DLN program, Dental HouseCalls, makes treatment available to people who cannot travel easily to dentists’ offices. In Colorado, Illinois and New Jersey, a fully-equipped portable office is transported in a van set up in nursing homes, residential centers and private residences. With the expansion of adult Medicaid benefits, the Colorado HouseCalls program has substantially increased services and revenues collected through Medicaid. This year we plan to pilot the expansion of programs in other states.

Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS):

Dentists help WWII ImmigrantsWorld War II Auschwitz Concentration Camp survivor Henry, age 91, and his wife Agnes, age 84, have a colorful history, emigrating from Poland to the U.S. through Ellis Island to Boston in 1949. Henry worked as a meat cutter until the couple bought a farm and moved their family to Northwood, New Hampshire, where they raised dairy cattle. Years later after selling the farm, Henry built clocks for the Seth Thomas Company.

Henry was referred to the Donated Dental Services (DDS) program by Concord Hospital. His cardiologist was concerned that Henry’s abscessed teeth and recurrent dental infections would jeopardize the success of his aortic valve replacements. But Henry, who had not had dental treatment for 40 years, could not afford the help he needed.

Two DDS volunteer dentists graciously donated the necessary care: Dr. Kimberly Meyer, a general dentist, and Dr. Austin Wang, a periodontist. Treatment included six extractions, twelve restorations and partial upper and lower dentures. Alan Bourgouin of Amoskeag Dental Laboratory fabricated the dentures at no charge. Mr. Bourgoin also serves on the Dental Lifeline Network, New Hampshire Advisory Council.

Henry’s wife, Agnes, a 35-year breast cancer survivor, also had severe dental disease. Agnes’ fragile health delayed her treatment, but it is in progress. Dr. Meyer, whose dental practice is located a few minutes from the couple’s home, generously agreed to treat both patients, facilitating their appointment scheduling and transportation.

Brian D. Stone Memorial Awards

Dental Lifeline Network partners with dental schools across the country each year through the Brian D. Stone Memorial Award program to recognize graduating students who have committed to volunteerism or to helping people with special needs. Nineteen schools participated in 2015. The awards program was established by Drs. Joy and Justin Stone of New Jersey and is open to any accredited dental school.

Since DLN launched its flagship program, Donated Dental Services (DDS) thirty years ago, the wonderful volunteers of DLN have been donating comprehensive dental treatment to those who have nowhere else to turn: individuals with disabilities, senior citizens and those who are medically fragile. Thanks for our new video, ADA!We express our sincere thanks to the American Dental Association for lending us its production team to shoot and produce a Donated Dental Service (DDS) volunteer recruitment video. The 3-1/2-minute video features two DDS volunteer dentists from the Chicago area. Dr. David Gershenzon who practices in downtown Chicago and Dr. Tina Smith of Arlington Heights share their thoughts on why they volunteer for DDS. Four DDS patients also describe what it meant to them to receive free dental treatment.

One of those patients is Amanda, age 34, who uses a wheelchair and gets help from family members for mobility. A birth defect prevented her joints from fully developing. After working for a bank for many years, she now relies on Social Security benefits. Amanda types with her mouth. She cracked a tooth and, unable to afford dental care, postponed treatment until a much bigger problem developed. Eventually, she contacted the DDS program.

Three DDS volunteers came to Amanda’s rescue. Dr. Bruksch, an oral surgeon, extracted a tooth. Dr. Thomas Kopp, a general dentist donated a crown a full lower partial and restorations and G and H Dental Arts of Torrence, California, provided the crown.

“Every single day that I have a healthy smile and a healthy mouth, I can do the things I need to do and feel confident,” Amanda said. “You guys did that for me... thank you!”

DentaCheques introduces New e-DentaCheques optionFor the first time, in 2015 DentaCheques purchasers had a choice: purchase the traditional book of coupons or buy e-DentaCheques and redeem their coupons for free and discounted dental products on mobile devices or computers. Both options offer dentists the same discounted values on supplies and equipment at the same $149 purchase price.

DentaCheques revenues totaled nearly $1.6 million. These funds help make DLN’s programs

possible by funding dental treatment to people who desperately need it. Sponsors include the Dental Trade Association and its members, the DTA Foundation, Colgate-Palmolive Company, Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, and Northeast Delta Dental.
