DENTAL TOURISM IN CROATIA

We can easily say that dental tourism is the future of medical tourism in Croatia. As a branch of medical tourism, it has developed out of the growing demand for treatment of certain dental issues in a new, special setting.

The history of dental tourism does not go far into the past. It is one of the newest selective types of tourism, however today it is already well known in Croatia in both theory and practice.

It all started when a certain Italian tourist decided to spend his vacation in Croatia. When he realized his vacation was not going to be very pleasant due to a toothache, he decided to visit the dentist. At first he was skeptical, but he ended up being impressed with the quality of service and the professionalism. In addition to a job well done and quality service that pleased the tourist, another

Man kann sagen, dass Dentaltourismus die Zukunft des Gesundheitstourismus in Kroatien ist. Es geht um die Behandlung bestimmter Zahnbeschwerden, Deswegen ist Dentaltourismus ein Teil des s.g. Gesundheitstourismus.

Es ist nicht so lange her, als mit dieser selektiven Art des Tourismus begonnen wurde. Trotzdem ist Dentaltourismus in Kroatien bekannt.

Alles begann, als ein Tourist aus Italien seinen Urlaub in Kroatien verbringen wollte. Wegen seiner Zahnschmerzen wurde ihm klar worden, mit Schmerzen kann er sich nicht erholen und besuchte schließlich einen Zahnarzt. Anfangs noch skeptisch, zum Schluss aber erstaunt, wegen der Qualität der Leistung und der Professionalität. Letztendlich war er mit dem Service sehr zufrieden und wollte bezahlen. thing that pleased him was the price, which was very humble comparing to Italy. It was not long until the word spread in Italy and Croatia became a hit destination for dental treatment.

Croatian dentists soon realized that this trend actually represents a positive step in medical tourism and that is how the story of dental tourism started. Apart from quality service and professionalism, tourist are offered additional services such as accommodation, unforgettable gastronomy and wine, rich cultural, historical and natural heritage, and affordable prices which make the whole offer a lot more accessible and attractive.

Many clinics in Croatia offer accommodation in addition to dental service, but tourist agencies have also started organizing travel packages for tourists interested in this type of tourism. One of them is the tourist agency Vetus Itinera, also one of the biggest tourist agencies for this purpose in the region of Dalmatia.

HISTORY OF DENTAL TOURISM IN THE WORLD

Dental tourism is a subset of the sector known as medical tourism. It involves individuals seeking dental care outside of their local healthcare systems and may be accompanied by a vacation.

Dental tourism is growing worldwide as the world becomes ever more interdependent and competitive, technique, material, and technological advances spread rapidly, enabling providers in “developing countries” to provide dental care at significant cost savings when compared with their peers in the developed world.

While dental tourists may travel for a variety of reasons, their choices are usually driven by price considerations.

Examples include travel from Austria to Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia, from the US and Canada to Mexico and Peru, from the Republic of Ireland to Northern

Dentaltourismus ist ein Teil des Medizintourismus. Individuen suchen zahnärztliche Betreuung außerhalb ihres lokalen Gesundheitswesens und kombinieren dies mit ihrem Urlaub. Dentaltourismus gewinnt an der Popularität weltweit. Die Technik, das Material und technische Fortschritte verbreiten sich in der heutigen globalen Welt sehr rasch.

Während die Dentaltouristen aus unterschiedlichen Gründen verreisen, wird ihre Auswahl wohin meistens von dem Preis beeinflusst.

Folgende Reisen werden als Beispiele genannt, von Österreich nach Ungarn, Slowakei und Slowenien. Von den USA und Kanada nach Mexiko und Peru. Von Irland nach Nord Irland, Ungarn, Polen, Türkei und Ukraine. Während für den Medizintourismus generell angenommen wird, dass aus den Ländern mit hohem

Ireland, Hungary, Poland, Turkey and Ukraine. While medical tourism is often generalized to travel from high-income countries to low-cost developing economies, other factors can influence a decision to travel, including differences between the funding of public healthcare or general access to healthcare.

Dental tourists travel mainly to take advantage of lower prices. Reasons for lower prices are many: dentists outside the “developed world” are able to take advantage of much lower fixed costs, lower labor costs, less government intervention, lower education fees and expenses, and lower insurance costs.

Much of the bureaucratic red-tape that engulfs businesses in the developed world is eliminated abroad, and dentists are free to focus on their trade, dentistry. The flip-side of this is less legal recourse for patients when something goes wrong, but the result is that procedures, such as dental implants and porcelain veneers, which are simply financially out of reach for many people in the developed world, are made affordable overseas.

Einkommen in die Länder mit einer schwächeren Wirtschaft gereist wird, gibt es auch andere Faktoren, die die Entscheidung eine Reise anzutreten, beeinflussen. U.a. sind dies Unterschiede zwischen der Finanzierung des staatlichen Gesundheitswesens und generellem Zugang zum Gesundheitswesen.

Dentaltouristen reisen kostengünstiger um den Vorteil der niedrigen Preise auszunutzen. Für niedrigere Preise gibt es viele Grunde: Zahnärzte außerhalb der entwickelten Länder können die Vorteile viel niedrigerer Fixkosten ausnützen, ebenso wie auch niedrigere Laborkosten, weniger Einmischen der Politik in das Gewerbe, niedrigere Ausbildungskosten und niedrigere Versicherungskosten. Die Bürokratie ist in diesen Ländern nicht so kompliziert und die Zahnärzte können sich dadurch auf das Wesentliche konzentrieren, nämlich auf ihre Arbeit. Auf der anderen Seite bedeutet das, gesetzlich gesehen, niedrigere Entschädigungsauszahlung für die Patienten, im Falle, dass etwas schief läuft. Anderseits ist das Resultat z.B. wesentlich billigere Zahnimplantate, die sich viele in ihrem eigenen Land nicht leisten können.

Manchmal ist es sogar kostengünstiger für die zahnärztlichen Dienste, die Unterkunft und die Fahrkosten in einem anderen Land zu bezahlen, als nur den Zahnarzt im eigenen Land.

COST OF DENTAL TREATMENT IN CROATIA

Dental services can be very expensive, depending on the country. If we compare Croatia with neighboring countries, the prices are almost a 50% lower, which is a big advantage for the development of dental tourism.

For example in Italy dental implants cost between 1000 and 2000 EUR, in Great Britain the price is approximately 1500-2000 GBP, and in Croatia it is as low as 550-600 EUR. For the price of service in Italy or Great Britain, in Croatia you get dental treatment, accommodation and transfer from your country.

Even though the price is lower, you do not have to question the quality of service. Croatian dentists offer high quality service, comparable to the service of other European and American dentists. In Croatia, where the Mediterranean, the mountains and the Pannonian plains come together in a unique harmony of natural beauty, within just a little more than a hundred kilometres, you can come across excitingly different landscapes.

CLIMATENorthern Croatia has a temperate continental climate whereas the central and upland regions have a mountainous climate. The entire Adriatic coast has a pleasant Mediterranean climate.

Spring and autumn are mild along the coast, while winter is cold and snowy in central and northern regions. The average temperature inland in January ranges from -10 to 5°C, August 19 to 39°C.

BY BUS The bus service in Croatia is first class: there is even a bus connection between the smallest villages in the country. There are express buses that cover longer distances and which are reasonably comfortable. Bus travel is also inexpensive, and the new motorways in parts of the country have reduced journey times considerably. In almost every larger town, there is a bus station (Autobusna Stanica) where tickets are sold and timetables are clearly displayed.

Croatia is a relatively small country and distances between major tourist destinations are not that long.

If you want to visit Croatia for 3 days prepare yourself for a lot of walking. Make sure you have a spare battery for your camera as you will not get much time

to charge yours! The best way to start your 3-day trip is in Zagreb. After Zagreb take a half-day trip to Plitvice Lakes. After that, go to Zadar and use the rest of your day for exploring Zadar’s major attractions.

On the third day go to Split where you can spend the morning sightseeing. Finally, take a half-day trip to Trogir.

Vergewissern Sie sich, dass Sie Reservebatterien für Ihre Kameras und Fotoapparate mithaben, da Sie keine Zeit zum aufladen haben werden.

Für ein dreitägiges Programm empfehlen wir die Reise in Zagreb zu beginnen. Nach Zagreb machen Sie eine halbtägige Reise nach fallenden Seen von Plitvice. Führen Sie Ihre Reise danach in Zadar fort und besichtigen Sie dort die bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten.

Fahren Sie an dritten Tag nach Split, wo Sie eine Frühbesichtigung machen können. Nach Split, machen Sie eine halbtägige Reise nach Trogir.

In 7 days you can really experience a lot in Croatia. You can start your trip in Zagreb and slowly move towards the south, to end your tour in Dubrovnik.

On the second day visit Pula. While in Pula you can take a half-day trip to Poreč or Rovinj, both north of Pula, or you can visit Brijuni National Park.

On the third day go to Opatija and spend the day in Lovran, Ika and Opatija. In the evening go to Rijeka to shop or have a drink or two. Next day continue your trip in Zadar, but on the way there make sure you stop in Nin - Croatian Royal city.

After Zadar, visit Šibenik and take a trip to one of the two national parks nearby - Krka waterfalls or Kornati Islands.

On the fifth day go to Split. There you can take a ferry to one of the many reachable islands close by. You could go to Korcula

On the sixth day go to Dubrovnik and spend all day in its core - old town. You can take a trip to Mljet national park.

On the seventh day return to Zagreb, but on the way make sure you stop in Plitvicka jezera and Rastoke.

If you are interested in history and like to spend most of your vacation in museums, then Croatia is the place for you. It can be described as one of the best living museums where every house has its story.

For a cultural tour, make sure you start your trip in Varaždin. Varaždin was once the capital of Croatia, and is the most beautiful baroque city in the country.

From Varaždin you can take a half-day trip to the Trakošćan castle. After Varaždin you should visit Zagreb. Zagreb as the capital of Croatia is also the center of cultural events. You can either visit one of the many museums Zagreb has to offer, or you can enjoy selected plays in the Croatian National Theater.

significant global monument. After Porec, visit the amphitheater in Pula. It is the sixth largest amphiteather in the world. After Pula, go to the Island of Krk, and explore the trail of Glagolitsa (Glagolitic alphabet).

If you like small and calm towns, Nin would be your next choice. Nin is located not far from Zadar, where you can continue your sightseeing. When sun sets down in Zadar, make sure you are on the Riva. There you will find the most amazing sunset in the world.

After Zadar, you can go south, towards Split and explore Diocletian’s palace, the largest ancient roman palace in the world. An interesting fact is that people still actually live there.

When you are done exploring Split, go to Dubrovnik – the pearl of the Mediterranean. There you will have the opportunity to really feel Croatia’s glorious history.
