Sources of Revenue: FY 03-04Over the past 10 years, every aspect of college

operations has experienced dramatic expansion in

both size and complexity. This remarkable growth

is reflected by the college’s revenues, which have

more than doubled from $22.9 million in 1993 to

$46.8 million in 2004. In response, the college has

aggressively developed and implemented a com-

prehensive strategic plan to assist in streamlining

and improving operations.

in federal funding

for research. In

addition, we are

committed to

seeking support for

our research and

training activities

through industry

and state funding.

The college is nationally recognized for its oral health research enterprise, emphasizinginfectious diseases in dentistry, bone biology, pain and neurosciences, and translationalresearch to improve clinical and dental care.We anticipate building on this reputation byrecruitment of mid-career, top-notch basic scientists to achieve excellence in areas ofestablished strength in the college while moreclosely aligning the college with key initiatives

within the university and Health ScienceCenter. These initiatives include genomics ofinfectious diseases, immunology, autoimmuni-ty, biostatistics, cancer epidemiology and prevention, cell biology/cell signaling, and pain and neurosciences. We will also strive to recruit magnet investigators and juniorinvestigators to provide a nucleus of clinicaland translational researchers in areas where we presently have complementary strengths.

FACULTY RESEARCH AWARDS 2003-04During the 2003-04 academic year there were more than 100 active sponsored research projects in the college. Our faculty received funding from federal,

state, and corporate agencies and nonprofit foundations to conduct research in the areas of (but not limited to) oral biology, biomaterials, neuroscience,

cancer, and public health. The recently awarded NIH/NIDCR infrastructure grant will increase and define future clinical studies in conjunction with

enhancing our efforts in the realm of basic science. The awards listed below represent the diverse and innovative research efforts of our faculty.

The College of Dentistry has a multi-facetedservice mission encompassing patient careand community outreach and education.Through its Statewide Network forCommunity Oral Health, the collegeimproves access to dental care for Florida’sresidents, focusing on vulnerable and indigent populations and special needspatients. The college has become one of the

largest providers of low-cost dental care inFlorida, providing nearly 10 percent of allindigent care to Florida’s residents throughcomprehensive state-of-the-art clinical services. Our students and faculty also give of themselves in providing free dental treatment to underserved popula-tions during service missions abroad and at home.

STATEWIDE NETWORK FOR COMMUNITY ORAL HEALTH

The StatewideNetwork for

Community OralHealth is a unique

statewide resourcewith the goal of

providing clinicallearning opportuni-

ties for dental students and

residents while also improving

access to dentalservices to the

underserved.

Right: UFCD students embark on humanitarian service trips each year to the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and theYucatan, Mexico. Operatories in the field may be a wooden chair in a schoolroom with no electricity, a bench undera thatched hut, or even a truck bed — no location is too primitive to be pressed into service. The students' largelyrural patient base typically live very close to the land, and many have never before received dental care.

UFCD is one of the largest providers of low-cost dental care to Florida’s

indigent residents – more than 70 percent of the college’s patients have

incomes at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.

SERVICE

FUTURESince 1994, the college’s dean’s office has fund-ed $4,059,377 in renovations and purchase ofclinic or audiovisual equipment. Departmentshave funded an additional $872,368 in renova-tions and upgrades and the university recentlyallocated $850,000 to support the renovationof the college’s D3-3 classroom, clinic 1A and

the Craniofacial Center. These represent a totalof $5,781,745 in college improvements and we estimate another $3.3 million will be needed to complete renovation of the Dental Sciences Building’s clinical facilities.Of immediate need is $600,000 to replace equipment in our student teaching clinics.
