Every dentistry graduate emphasizes adifferent aspect of how his or her McGilleducation led to success.

Though he earned his diploma 25 yearsago, Dr. David Lipnowski says “though nothingis the same because of a gradual change inmaterials, equipment and instruments, everything I do is based on what I learned atMcGill. I never said, ‘I don’t like this method.’”

McGill methods are justified at every stepby solid research and reasoning, adds theOttawa dentist, and the one way studentsare taught to perform each operationensures a good result for patients in the chair.

“They teach quality over quantity,” saysLipnowski. “You learn to do your firstprocedure really well, spending adisproportionate amount of time doing it,with the philosophy that the second time,it will go faster.”

Dr. Peter Coakley of Massachusetts praisesthe communication skills that allowed him topresent treatments clearly to patients. “Mypractice was very successful right away,”says the 1973 graduate. “No one knowsanything when you start, not even how tohold an instrument. A lot of my successhad to do with McGill. When I graduated I could do good dentistry.”

When growing up in Lunenburg,Massachusetts, Dr. Michael Cronin’sfather – a McGill grad himself – told hisson in no uncertain terms that he wouldalso be studying there.

“He knew that, compared to otherschools, including Tufts and Georgetown,my education would be superior. And hewas right. The school expects more.” Dr. Cronin credits the diagnostic ability he learned at McGill. “We were taught tolook at the big picture. The first time yousee the patient, you work out in your mindlogically what needs to be done. We werevery well prepared.”

“McGill guys stand out when they comein contact with graduates from otheruniversities,” proclaims Dr. Robin Jackson, a native Montrealer who established himselfas the first orthodontist in the now-thrivingVancouver suburb of Richmond in 1970.

“I was impressed by the closeness of the people at the school, includingfaculty and support staff. I viewed it as a family, almost.”

When Duncan Moran returned toBermuda with his McGill degree indentistry 28 years ago, he felt ready forjust about anything.

“When I started, in comparison toothers, it was like I’d had five years inpractice,” he says. “There was no problemdealing with day-to-day procedures.Anything a patient could throw at me, I could do something about… We were alsowell trained to keep on learning.

“I’m just glad I didn’t go anywhereelse. I got a damn good education.”

When Jennifer Charbonneau walksinto class, it’s like stepping into theUnited Nations. Fellow dentistry studentshail from the Middle East, Asia, Europeand the Caribbean, as well as from acrossCanada and the United States.

“Coming from Newmarket, Ontario,I’d never been exposed to this before,” saidthe second-year student. “It’s really nice.”

Encouraging applications fromelsewhere makes sense on many levels toFaculty of Dentistry Dean James Lund.“We want to make sure we have the bestqualified students possible,” he says. Theresult is a cultural mix unrivalled by anyother school in Canada, Lund adds, and awidespread group of graduates “whoseMcGill training helps their owncommunities, and who act asambassadors for the university.”

This year, more than half the studentsaccepted by the faculty live outside Quebec.

Students are attracted not only byMcGill’s longstanding reputation as oneof the world’s best dental schools. Theyare drawn by low tuition and a revampedcurriculum that features a strongintegration with general health care, thelatest trends in dentistry, and classes ofno more than 30 students.

“All the professorsknow you and knowwhat kind of work youdo – its a warmfeeling,” saysDemetrios Petropoulos, who applied to McGillbecause he says theteaching, facilities andreputation are betterthan dental schools inhis native Greece.“You have just onedemonstrator for everyfour of five students, and that’s just notpossible where I come from.”

“I enjoyed the people, they were veryfriendly,” says Dr. Newton Gordon, whocame from Jamaica to study in the 1970sand is now professor of oral andmaxillofacial surgery at the University ofCalifornia, San Francisco. “Staff supportyou all the way through your education. You don’t get lost as you would in largeinstitutions in the United States.”

Many become so enamoured of thecity itself that they continue to return, years later, to enjoy Montreal’s bilingualnature and cosmopolitan attractions.

“I didn’t even apply to Harvard,” saysDr. Peter Coakley, a Boston-area studentwho graduated 25 years ago. “I wanted a different experience.” He was notdisappointed. “The city is so beautiful. I go back every year because I’m in lovewith it.”

Having free street entertainment, likethe popular Jazz Festival, a short strollfrom campus is a bonus for Mark Martin, who interrupted his plastic surgerymedical residency at McGill to earn a dentistry doctorate. It is McGill’s well-developed dental cleft palateprogram, however, that drew him.

“Taking dentistry here will improvemy understanding of orthodonticmedicine,” says the Winnipeg-bornstudent, “and patients will get bettertreatment because of that. It will improvecooperation within the team of specialiststhat treat cleft palate patients.”

“Applicants are often secondgeneration” says Vancouver residentMichelle Lee. “It’s a family tradition. Myfather (Kenneth K.S. Lee, DDS’66) cameto McGill from Indonesia – he didn’tspeak English or French and he struggledquite a bit. But he thought it was a goodschool and he had a really good time.”

Students appreciateMontreal’s low cost ofliving. “It’s waycheaper to study herethan in Ontario,” saysCharbonneau, whocited low fees as herprimary reason forchoosing McGill. Nowclass president, she isequally impressedwith the quality offellow classmates. Dr. Gordon is tryingto convince his sons toattend McGill partly

“because it would cost less than California.”Dr. David Lipnowski, a Montrealer

now practicing in Ottawa, explains hischoice of university this way: “When yougrow up in Vancouver, you ski Whistler. When you grow up in McGill’s backyard,if you can get in, you’ve got to go.”

“I didn’t shop for schools,” says Dr.Robin Jackson, another ex-Montrealernow living in Vancouver. “It was home, it was close, and that’s where I went. Ilucked out.”

Broad cultural mix and small class size enhance McGill’s sterling

McGill Dentistry = SUCCESSIt’s Not a Secret Formula

Grads prevail anywhere thanks to rigorous grounding in the basics

Montreal has a deserved reputation ashaving the world’s greatest concentrationof talented clinicians and scientistsexamining pain. That reputation hasenticed Dr. Gary Bennett from MCPHahnermann University to becomeDirector of Clinical Research of McGill’sPain Clinic.

As of April 1, Bennett will be installedas Associate Professor, a joint appointmentshared between Dentistry and Anaesthesia,

and will be one of the first recipients of aCanada Research Chair funded by theFederal budget.

“It’s a fairly new field,” says Dr. Bennettof pain research, especially chronic pain.“The drugs we use to treat acute moderateto severe pain are extraordinarily efficient, but difficult to use over long periods oftime because they are opiates.

“For the first time, these past six orseven years, many new drugs have been

found that are effective in treating somechronic pain. Scientific research into painis one of the busiest and most productiveareas of neurological research right now.”

Dr. Bennett, whose own research hasbeen evenly divided between animals andpeople, is looking forward to “taking myresearch from the bench to the bedside.”The McGill University Pain Clinic, whichrelies mainly on a dozen part-time staffand a half-dozen consulting specialists, is

anticipating Dr. Bennett’s leadership inextending its work and expanding its staff.Last year, the clinic had 1,690 patientvisits; this year’s budget is nearly $290,000.

Dr. Bennett is currently Director ofPain Research and Quantitative SensoryTesting and Autonomic Nervous TestingLaboratories in Philadelphia, and has beenChief of the Neuropathic Pain and PainMeasurement Section of the NationalInstitutes of Health in Maryland.

McGILL IS UNIQUE. Theuniversity combines an internationalreputation for overall excellencewith particularly notable programs– including dentistry – thatroutinely attract students fromaround the world. In the eight yearsGallup has posed the question, McGillhas also ranked tops with Canadians in anation-wide poll.

McGill offers students unbeatable extrasto their top-notch education: a rich culturaldiversity and high standard of living in avibrant, cosmopolitan city. Half the studentbody has a mother tongue other than Englishor French. Strongly qualified students meettheir academic peers: McGill studentsroutinely scoop up national awards. Itsgraduates attain prominence: 115 studentsare Rhodes scholars, the most of anyuniversity in Canada.

As befits an illustrious program thatdates from the 1920s, dentistry at McGilldoes not rest on its laurels. The curriculumwas recently improved by reducing class size, emphasizing general health care, and

incorporating the latest developmentsin dental education.

The university's qualityprograms result in degrees that arerecognized the world over.

Graduates are accepted to topgraduate schools and begin strong

careers from their McGill base. Invaluableaid is provided by faculty who do pioneeringwork, produce illustrious research papers, and garner more research dollars per capitathan any other Canadian university. Studentsbenefit from connections provided by facultylinked to 73 international research centres, aswell as Canada’s research centres of excellence.

It’s no surprise that nearly one-sixth ofthe 166,000 McGill alumni live and work in155 countries outside North America, or thatapplications from international studentsnumber about 4,500 each year. Internationalstudents make up close to 20 percent of thispast year’s incoming class, and representnearly one-quarter of graduate students.

The only surprise is often for students intheir first year, when successful applicants realizejust how lucky they are to have been accepted.

“We are allpartners.” As healthprofessionals, we havefar greater obligations

to our patients and the community as awhole than the responsibilities we carry inthe treatment of our patients. Fulfilment ofour commitments involves an active role inthe community. Many of us teach, usuallyfor no salary at all or for a small fractionof what we might otherwise earn; othersdonate time to benevolent causes like ourOutreach Program; and others committime to benefit the underprivileged in thefield of dentistry or elsewhere.

Why do we do this? We do thisbecause our lives are committed to thehelping of others. In fact, we take an oathpledging this when we receive our licenseto practice. It is hard to limit this to ourdaily work. We operate in a helping modefull time. It is in our nature and is a sourceof pride to all of us. Many of ourgraduates reveal to us the enormity of theircommitment to the community when wemeet them at various venues in our travels. It is always inspiring to hear these many

accounts, especially at thistime in our history when somany people conduct theirlives so selfishly.

We stand out in sharpcontrast: we are role modelsand we affect the lives of the people around us farmore than many of us willadmit. How many peoplecan say at the end of the daythat with their two handsand their knowledge, theyhave almost certainlybenefited others? This is agreat gift and perhaps onethat we may sometimesignore or not appreciate.

Our responsibilities include supportingteaching institutions that ensure thecontinued excellence of future generationsof health professionals. At McGill’sFaculty of Dentistry we are graduatingprofessionals who make us justifiablyproud.

Creating Connections

Since the last newsletter waspublished, there have been several

important developments at the Faculty.Dr. Marie Dagenais took over asAssociate Dean (Academic) from thelate beloved Dr. Howard Katz, and hasdone her very best to manage thedevelopment of the curriculum. Dr. TimHead took over as Director of theDivision of Oral and MaxillofacialSurgery from Dr. Ken Bentley, who has retired, and several new facultymembers have been appointed tostrengthen both teaching and research. I am particularly proud of the fact thatthe Faculty, in collaboration with theDepartment of Anaesthesia, has beenable to attract Dr. Gary Bennett toMcGill. Dr. Bennett is one of theworld’s best scientists working on pain, and just before Christmas, we found out

that he had been awarded one of thefirst of the new Canada ResearchChairs, which will bring about $2million to the Faculty over ten years.McGill also honoured Dr. MarcMcKee, our Associate Dean (Researchand Graduate Studies) by naming him a Dawson Scholar.

As many of you know, I am not agraduate of McGill, and did not teachhere before I became Dean five and a half years ago. Looking in from the outside, I had always had theimpression that McGill grads weremore successful than the average, andthat a very large percentage of eachgraduating class went on to specialitytraining. However, once I began atMcGill, I realised that my impressionswere based on the local scene; I knewalmost nothing about the situationoutside Montreal.

Therefore, I decided to meet asmany of the McGill graduates as Icould by travelling to dental meetings, across Canada, and in the USA. As you know, Debbie Larocque and

Dr. Norman Miller have also beenattending meetings, and organisingreceptions in order to meet as many ofyou as possible. However, we neverreally knew just where all our graduateswere; we knew that there was a lot inOttawa, Toronto and Vancouver, but thatwas all. So for this issue, we decided toproduce the McGill Dentistry MappaMundi, which you saw on the firstpage. It is as accurate as we can makeit, although I have heard a rumour thatthe accuracy of our count in Florida(19) is being contested.

You will see that there are dentists inevery Province and Territory of Canadaexcept the Yukon, who trained at McGill. We also have grads in 29 of the statesof the USA, and in 15 other countries. Iknow that many dentists who practicein Ontario and the West are part of theAnglo Diaspora that left Quebec in thelast 30 years, but many others came toMcGill for training and then returnedhome. This tradition continues, andbetween 30% and 50% of the studentsin each of the four years of the Dentistry

program come from outside Quebec.Nowadays, many professional

schools in Canada and the USA takefew students from outside theirProvince or State, and even at McGill, government restrictions mean that veryfew out-of-province students can getinto Medicine. As I travelled around, Imet many alumni who assumed that thesame policy applied to Dentistry, andthey were surprised when I told themthat this was not the case. So, if any ofyou have children or grandchildren whowould like to become dentists, or if youknow other worthy candidates, pleaseencourage them to apply to McGill, ifthey have the necessary qualifications. We are very proud of McGill’s recordof training for the internationalmarketplace, and are making a strongeffort to attract the best applicants from home and abroad.

These are people of integrity, greatskill, and extraordinary sensitivity andcommitment to the communities theyserve. They are a source of great prideand satisfaction to all of us who aredirectly involved with McGill, and tothose of us who have had the privilege ofmeeting them or working with them. Weare constantly being asked by dentists allover North America to provide names ofgraduates who are looking for positions. Our reputation is clearly a very good one– particularly to those graduates of otherdental schools. Our reputation extends toundergraduate applicants, as evidenced by

great interest expressed at our booth atlast year’s McGill Student Open House. The event, which took place on February13, 2000, targeted primarily students atthe CEGEP level. Staff and students wereon hand to respond to their questions.

Since our last publication, we took ourbooth to the Yankee Dental Conference inBoston in January 2000 where we wereagain inundated with interest in McGill. We also held a well-attended alumnireception, generously sponsored byBontempi Instruments Plus. In March weattended the joint Pacific Dental/CDAConference in Vancouver and again hadthe privilege of hosting a reception thatattracted a very large group of graduatesand friends of the Faculty. In May wewere present at The Ontario DentalAssociation Conference in Toronto, aswell as Les Journées Dentaires du QuébecAnnual Meeting here in Montreal. Wehope to meet as many of you as possible atthese locations once again this year.

By all measures, ithas been an amazingyear for research.Whereas nationwideexpenditures forresearch and

development havebeen dismally low the

past 10 years, recently a huge increase inresearch program funding has occurredboth provincially and federally. Whilecritics would say old levels of funding aresimply being reestablished, the increasesare clearly moving at a pace whosemomentum bodes well for the future ofscientific research in Canada – especiallyin biomedical and health-related fields. The overall objective of the CanadianInstitutes of Health Research (CIHR),previously known as the Medical ResearchCouncil (MRC) of Canada, is to reach alevel of funding for research in the nextfew years that represents 1% of the totalhealth care budget. This means a target ofone billion dollars annually for health-related research. In addition to substantialincreases in the base budgets of majorgranting councils this year and last, anumber of important new initiatives havebeen implemented in the year 2000.

Firstly, the new CIHR has acquired abroader mandate to cover many health-related issues not previously funded by itspredecessor. There is also a new president,

Dr. Alan Bernstein. Some old programshave been abandoned, while other moreinterdisciplinary and expanded programshave been created. CIHR’s mission will becentered around 13 new Institutes broadlycovering most fields of biomedical andhealth-related research. While many of usin the oral health field lobbied intensivelyto have our own institute dedicated solelyto supporting our somewhat uniqueresearch interests, this did not occur. Themassive restructuring resulted in a limitednumber of Institutes. Oral healthresearchers will now find that the mandateof the Institute of Musculoskeletal Healthand Arthritis perhaps best fits theirresearch programs, as oral health care anddentistry are specifically mentioned in thepreamble describing the mission of thisinstitute.

[“The CIHR Institute of MusculoskeletalHealth and Arthritis will support researchto enhance active living, mobility and movement, and dental health; and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions related to bones, joints, muscles, connective tissue, skin and teeth.”]

Institute directors and advisory boardmembers are expected to be announced inJanuary of 2001, and it is anticipated that

Dentistry will be represented by one ormore members on the advisory board.

Secondly, in recognition of the steadydeterioration of research infrastructurewithin the Canadian university system, a federal initiative entitled the CanadaFoundation for Innovation (CFI) hasinjected approximately $800 million (withmatching funds from provincial, corporateand private sources) into upgradinguniversity equipment and researchfacilities. McGill University as a wholewas highly successful in the last CFIcompetition, and Faculty of Dentistryresearchers were prominent in securingalmost $4 million for a new MontrealCentre for Advanced Bone andPeriodontal Research. This researchfacility will be equipped with state-of-the-art biomedical equipment and laboratoriesto study afflictions such as osteoporosisand

periodontal disease. Other Dentistryresearchers participated in the CFI-fundedMulticentre Pain Research Initiative thatreceived almost $5 million to establish a“unique network of core facilities for theintegrated study of pain in its multipledimensions.”

At the provincial level, the Fonds de laRecherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ) isoperating with an increased budget of $65million, up from $45 million, and the Réseaude recherche en santé bucco-dentaire, linkingQuebec’s oral health investigators in aresearch network, is a major beneficiary ofthis funding agency. A second major fundingorganization, Valorisation-RechercheQuébec, has been established in the provinceto fund innovative projects that benefitQuebec society, and some of this money isalso available for support staff salaries tooperate the equipment and facilities fundedby CFI.

Within the Faculty, there is an upbeatfeeling arising from these increased fundinglevels and from recent successes by facultyinvestigators in national and provincialcompetitions. Faculty of Dentistry researchersremain prominent on the international scene, and are publishing in the top-ranked journalsworldwide. Expect to hear more on theseaccomplishments in the future, as theimproved research arena in Quebec andCanada will allow for even betterexperimental plans utilizing noveltechnologies and newly acquired, world-classinstrumentation. For more details on theresearch programs and publications of Facultyof Dentistry researchers, please visit the“dental research” link on our Web site athttp://www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/.

Dr. Marie Dagenais and Dr. JeffreyMyers presented a poster entitled“Integrating with Medicine: the McGillExperience” at the April 2000 meeting ofthe American Association of DentalSchools in Washington D.C. The postersummarized an educational projectcarried out by Dr.Marie Dagenais, the lateDr. Howard Katz, Dr. Jeffrey Myers, Dr.Dana Hawley, Dr. Jocelyne Feine and Dr.James P. Lund. The authors compared theperformance of the last class using theold curriculum (Class of 1999) with thatof the first class using the newcurriculum (Class of 2000).

They used several measures ofcompetence to compare the two classes, including the evaluation of 48 specificclinical competencies by the clinicinstructors, the students’ evaluation oftheir own level of preparedness, patients’evaluations of their satisfaction, clinicalproductivity, and results on the AmericanBoard examinations.

The results of this project suggest anincrease in clinical productivity in theClass of 2000. The instructors rated both

classes as being equally prepared in 42categories, but the Class of 2000 wasrated significantly higher than the Classof 1999 in six categories. This differencewas also reflected in the students’ reports:the Class of 2000 felt more prepared thanthe Class of 1999 in seven categories. Thepatients rated the two classes equally onquestions related to communication orcompetence but the Class of 2000 wasrated higher in empathy. Both classesperformed equally well on the AmericanBoard examination, except for the sectionAnatomical Sciences where the Class of1999 out-performed the Class of 2000.

In the new curriculum, traditionalbasic sciences courses have beeneliminated. Basic, applied and clinicalscience are taught in an integrated way,and much of the teaching is based onclinical situations. The clinic is run as ageneral practice, and patients are treatedas people, not as a collection of clinicalrequirements. The presentation was verywell received and stimulated a lot ofinterest in the dental educationcommunity.

The Faculty of Dentistry OutreachProgram was named one of two recipientsof the Oral Health Promotion Award, presented for the first time this year. Theceremony honoring the recipients washeld on September 16, 2000 at the WestinHotel in Ottawa. Program DirectorMichael Wiseman, DDS’85, accepted theaward. The Oral Health Promotion Awardrecognizes initiatives that accomplish oneor more of the following: meet the oralhealth needs of a growing number ofolder Canadians; advance prevention inspecial populations and high-risk groups;reduce inequalities by improving the oralhealth status of disadvantaged groups andcommunities.

Outreach Program Update

The clinic has welcomed close to 1,000 patients since the start of the program inApril of 1998, with treatments varying from oral diagnosis, periodontal treatment, preventive services, restorative dentistry, to oral surgery. The clinics have beenenthusiastically attended by our volunteer students, auxiliaries and dentists. Wemust acknowledge the aid of Skulnick Transport, which provides freetransportation of our equipment; Cote St. Luc Emergency Medical Service, whichhelps provide evaluation of all vital systems prior to treatment. Ms. Linda Thomsand her students from Western Laval High School, who aid in equipment setup and administrative duties; and Dentsply Canada, which provides free restorativesupplies. We have also expanded the administration of the program to includeJudiann Stern, who will work as Coordinator of the program, on a part-time basis.

Evening clinics have been provided to the following social agencies: Sun Youth,Teen Haven, Dans La Rue, and Jewish Family Services. A daytime sealant programhas been established with the cooperation of CLSC Pointe St. Charles and the DSCMontreal to provide free sealants and fluoride treatments to children in the areawho, due to financial difficulties, would not normally receive these non-RAMQinsurable services.

Become a Volunteer

The Outreach Program is in need of support from dentists in the community.Evening clinics are both socially and emotionally rewarding.

If, due to other commitments, volunteering for this program is not an option for you, then please consider assisting the program by donating funds directly to the McGill Outreach Program, or by donating such items as handpieces andhand instruments.

The Outreach Program will soon obtain a dental van. This state-of-the-art vanwill be equipped with two complete dental operatories. It will be used for homevisits to palliative care patients and geriatric shut-ins, and will promote a moreformal comprehensive dental care in the community.

Faculty News and Notes

Four members of our Dentistry staffwere recently honored for their 25 years’service with the University. They includeOleg Kopytov, DDS’73, Ortho’75 andMrs. Olga Cartier, Secretary. Dr. JohnBlomfield, DDS’74, Prostho’82 and Mr.Peter Graham, Assistant Professor, werealso honored but were unable to attendthe event, which was held October 18,2000 in the Sir Arthur Currie MemorialGymnasium. Congratulations to all fortheir years of loyal and dedicated service.

Dr. Oleg Kopytov:The thrill of teaching exceptional

students persists for Dr. Oleg Kopytov, who was honoured for his 25 years in theDepartment of Orthodontics.

“If you’re here for that long, you mustlike imparting knowledge,” he laughs. Itcan be satisfying to teach even those

students who don’t show a particularlykeen interest. “It’s exciting to takesomeone who knows nothing, and teachthem a little more, then a little more, thena little more, until they can put thingstogether and form a correct diagnosis.”

The day he graduated from McGill,Dr. Kopytov knew he would return. Hebegan as an orthodontics teacher beforebecoming department head. His longcareer at McGill means he now knowsvirtually all Montreal-area English-speaking dentists, many of whom havereturned to teach.

“Someone has to come back andchange the world,” he says, “and often for the same reasons I did. They have thewill, the need, and the wish to participatein the growth and advancement of dentistry.”

delivered the valedictory speech, highlightsof which are featured below.

“...So here we are today. McGill’s firstgraduating class of the new millennium. TheClass of 2000. We will come back to McGill,be reunited, and we will remember this dayand the feelings that we are experiencingright now. Today is a day of mixed emotions.

We are proud; proud of ouraccomplishments, our achievements and oursuccesses. It has been a lot of hard work butwe persevered and our dedication and efforthas been rewarded. We have reached ourgoal and received our degree.

We are excited, and we are really lookingforward to starting the next phase of ourlives along with the new challenges that wewill be facing.

But we are also nervous, because leavingfamiliar surroundings to venture out on ourown can be a daunting situation for many ofus. And, although we are extremely happytoday, we are also experiencing moments ofsadness as we look around and see thepeople who we have shared this part of ourjourney with and realize that we will not beseeing each other every day as we have thesepast few years. These people have becomeour family – and like family, we know thatwherever we may end up we will always beable to count on them.

We are also thankful to all of ourprofessors, administration, families, friendsand roommates. Thanks for putting up withus – especially during exam time. This is asmuch your degree as it is ours. And withoutyour support, guidance and love, we wouldnot be here today remembering our past andcelebrating our future. We are delighted that

you, the most important people in our lives, are here to share this occasion with us.

When we come back for our reunions, orwhenever we look at our degree (which I’msure will be displayed in a very prominentplace), we will remember not only this daybut the culmination of events and experiencesthat have brought us to graduation.

…….We must now reach inside and drawupon our strengths. And we must never beafraid to make mistakes – as mistakes areproof that we’ve tried. We must leave oursafe, sheltered environment to go out intothe world and begin our careers. We chosethe helping profession because we felt thatwe could make a difference in the lives ofothers. It is now time to do just that.”

On April 6, 2000, the Faculty opened anew dental clinic in the recently completed

William and Mary Brown StudentServices Building. The clinic wasbuilt primarily to meet the needs ofMcGill’s student body, but is opento members of the public as well.

The service has become verypopular with McGill’s out-of-provincestudents who use the Building forall their health care needs. Theclinic is already booked two weeks inadvance with an average of six to eightpatients a day, and there are plans to

expand from one treatment room to two.It is staffed by two recent McGill

grads, Dr. Ghassan El-Onsi and Kelly SamChu, DDS’98 along with a staff hygienist,Chantal Duperron.

Last summer, Carol Chahine,DDSIV and space enthusiast, wasawarded a full scholarship to takepart in the International SpaceUniversity (ISU) which was heldat Universidad Technical FedericoSanta Maria, in Valparaiso, Chile. The summer program ran fromJuly 1 to September 2, 2000, andoffered students and youngprofessionals from various disciplinesand nationalities an opportunityto gain new perspectives on the

world’s space activities. InCarol’s case, it afforded her theopportunity to participate inprograms ranging from building

robots to conducting research onEl Niño.

A year earlier, in July 1999,Carol was part of the Canadiandelegation that participated inUNISPACE III, the UnitedNations conference on theExploration and Peaceful Uses ofOuter Space, held in Vienna. Oneof the recommendations fromthat conference was to establish acenter to promote theapplications of space medicinefor the benefit of mankind. InSeptember 1999, Carol and twoothers who were in Vienna, founded a club at McGill – the

Association for the Developmentof Aerospace Medicine(ADAM). In its first year, theclub was such a success that theStudents’ Society of McGillUniversity voted ADAM the bestnew club at McGill. Now in itssecond year, ADAM is still goingstrong. One of Carol’s goals forthe future is to look into robot-assisted surgery and its dentistryapplications.

The Faculty is extremelyproud of student initiatives, andcongratulates Carol on herachievements and wishes herwell in her future endeavours.

Mrs. Pierrette Wong

Pierrette Wong recalls with painfulprecision the kind of dentistry shereceived as a child growing up onthe island of Mauritius.

“We had mobile dental care thatwent from school to school, and youwere lucky if you saw a dentist oncea year. Very likely, by the time thedentist came, most children had a lotof pulling to be done,” she said. “Mytooth was pulled without anesthetic.I still remember I screamed so loudthat the whole village could hear me.”

So when Mrs. Wong heard froma friend about the Faculty ofDentistry’s Outreach Clinic, wheredental care is provided to anyone inneed, the cause spoke directly to herheart. Despite being busy withvolunteering work and numerousfundraising efforts in the Chinesecommunity, she soon agreed to co-chair the clinic’s 1999 fundraisingdinner.

“When you become aware of aprogram and you feel it’s somethingyou believe in and you can dosomething about, it’s important toact,” said Mrs. Wong. “If someone

asks me for help, I say, ‘What is itfor?’ If there’s a real need, I do it.”

Mrs. Wong has looked for a wayto honour her husband Jamson eversince he died four years ago. Shefound the perfect way through thedental research component of thenew Genome & Proteomics Centreto be located at McGill (this newbuilding will be built on the currentsite of the Donner Building). It willbe called The J.T.N. Wong MontrealUnit for Bone and PeriodontalResearch, thanks to her generosity.

Still, Mrs. Wong downplays herrole. “Individually, you cannot do

much. Collectively, we can do quitea bit. We can make a difference.”

“Nowadays, there are cutseverywhere, and not everyone canafford to go to the dentist. TheOutreach Program is a veryimportant addition to servicesprovided by organizations like SunYouth and Dans la Rue.

On volunteering generally, Wongsays, “people look at me and think Ihave nothing better to do; peoplewho know me know that I have todo it.”

Dr. Robert FaithDDS’58

As a busy young dentistbuilding his practice and teachingat McGill, Dr. Robert Faith wasimpressed by those who bothworked and volunteered. But he did not consider doing the same.

“I used to think, ‘I could neverdo that,’” said Dr. Faith. “Then, oneday, I was having lunch with thechairman of the Board ofGovernors – the president of

Marconi – and he said, ‘You know, when people ask me to dosomething, it’s usually fun. I’veregretted it very, very seldom.’I thought about that.”

The next time he wasapproached, Dr. Faith broketradition and said “Yes.”

Now retired, he looks back on a decades-long volunteering careerthat includes being in charge offundraising at Montreal Associationfor the Blind, serving as Chair ofthe Board at The Study private

school for girls, and serving as amember of the board of BatshawYouth and Family Centres.Dentistry at McGill, however, remains his first allegiance. Dr.Faith is on the Board of Governors,is chair of the Faculty AdvisoryBoard, and has been President ofthe Alumni Association. The listcould go on and on.

Just as his mentor promised,Dr. Faith has seldom regretted aconsistent volunteering regimenthat he estimates has long

accounted for one-fifth of hisworking time.

“I enjoyed getting out of theoffice, meeting interesting people, and learning a whole lot,” he said.“It’s very broadening – and a greatway to improve yourself. People whosay ‘No’ all the time miss a lot.”

Dr. Faith also sees it as paybackfor opportunity. “If not for theeducation I had at McGill, I wouldnot be as successful as I’ve been.Society subsidizes schooling, andwe have a certain duty to society.”

Mr. Arthur LauBArch’62

Surrounded by worthy causes, manydonors restrict themselves to one ortwo. Not so Arthur Lau, a architectwho has helped eight faculties at

McGill alone – not to mention manyorganizations outside the university. When asked why he supports the

Faculty of Dentistry, despite havingno direct connection, Lau says,“Health is important to everyone. Some people can’t afford their time, others don’t have the interest. But, inthe end, everyone is counting on

health care.“I’ve been working for education

and health care all my life.”Lau assisted in attracting donations

to dentistry at a crucial moment, when the program was in danger ofshutting down in 1994.

“He played a large part in keepingthe faculty open,” says Dean JamesLund. “He felt it was a very baddecision to close it down. Once thatwas accomplished, he felt he shouldstay on to help it to remain healthyand to grow.”

“He has a total commitment to theuniversity,” says Vice-Principal,Development and Alumni RelationsDerek Drummond, “and is able totransmit his enthusiasm to others –even to people as far away as HongKong.”

Lau, an extremely active member

of the Board of Governors, hasattracted several major donations andhas personally contributed fundingfor the Wong Building, variouschairs and scholarships. In Dentistryhe endowed an Entrance Scholarshipin memory of his father Ping KwanLau, assisted in acquiring major

support to establish the Dr. WahLeung Fellowship and just recentlyestablished the Dr. Soo Kim LanPrize for a graduate student.

Not surprisingly, Lau was recentlyappointed to the Order of Canada forhis extensive philanthropy.

Last year, Dr. Earl Lerner brokenew ground when he decided totake McGill up on its offer todirectly fund a scholarship forundergraduate students. He wasthe first who agreed to commit$2,000 each year over four years.

“I’ve been donating to myalma mater for years,” he said. “I feel a great indebtedness toMcGill and I have a great affinityfor it.” Lerner is enthusiasticabout the more personal touch thescholarship allows. “I can meetthe student – it’s moreresponsibility.”

Dr. Lerner, who has practiced

in Pointe Claire since completingpost-graduate orthodontics atColumbia University in 1966,even offered to mentor last year’swinning student – Brigitte Bigras– when he met her last fall.

“I don’t come from a familyof dentists and I had no mentor,no one to turn to when I was astudent,” he said. “Students areunder a lot of stress, a lot ofturmoil, and they may need totalk to someone when they havedifficulty studying, or are a littlediscouraged.”

Lerner has been an unwittingmentor in the past. He recently

met a former patient now in herfourth year of dentistry. He wasflabbergasted when she told him,“You were instrumental in gettingme interested in dentistry. I neverforget the personal touch you had– asking me about how myhockey was going, or my cross-country skiing.”

“I was a role model, and Ididn’t even know it!” said Lerner.Though it is just the first year ofhis commitment, Lerneralready anticipates signing upagain in 2003.

Mr. Paul Marchand,BCL’66, LLM’85

An endowmentfund has allowedDr. Paul R.Marchand’s,DDS’30, closerelationship withthe Faculty ofDentistry tocontinue despite

his death in May 1998.“The faculty was a huge part of

his life,” says his son and McGill-trained lawyer, Paul R. Marchand.“College was a very big deal andmeant an awful lot to him. Hemade lifelong friends here. He wasa teacher, and the dentists he cameto know from McGill remainedvery, very close.

“When we started the fund, Iwent up and saw the dean with myfather. I wanted to get the fundstarted when he was alive andknew about it. He was not a well-to-do man, and was glad I was

doing something to support McGilldentistry.”

While nurturing theendowment fund is a long-termendeavour for Marchand and thefund has not yet built sufficientcapital to fund a scholarship orbursary, interest now generates anannual prize for a deserving fourth-year student.

Marchand Sr. was anunflagging McGill supporter. “Hefelt it was the model for others tofollow,” says his son. Marchand

entered theprofession inthe 1930s, ata time whenQuebecdentists optedto pull ratherthan saveteeth. He was

horrified bythe practice.

High-speed drills were unknownand anesthetics unsophisticated formuch of his career, but Marchand’s

patients make a point of telling hisson, “You know, your father neverhurt me.”

Though a supporter of his ownFaculty of Law, Marchand is proudand pleased to help Dentistry onhis father’s behalf – and topersonally hand the Dr. Paul R.Marchand and Maurine McNeilMarchand Prize to a student duringconvocation.

VOLUNTEERPHONATHONS

THEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Each year in March and April, McGill University’s Development officecoordinates a major fundraising initiative in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. In eachcity, a group of volunteers works all evening, calling graduates and friends to solicitsupport for University priorities and thanking them for past support. These volunteersare graduates and students representing their respective faculties or departments, andthe personal contact during a call is an excellent opportunity for discussion on recentdevelopments in their areas. The Faculty of Dentistry has consistently been wellrepresented in Montreal, particularly by its student body (recent phonathons haverecruited anywhere from 15 to 20 students each year).

In March 2000, Dr. Gary Sankoff, DDS’61 received a call from a first yearDentistry student and below is a personal reflection on that experience and on earliercontacts:

“They were very relaxed, very knowledgeable, and had an excellentpresentation,” he told senior development and alumni relations officer DebbieLarocque. “I was on the phone about 15 minutes every time they called. We talkedabout dental school, what I did, and what I went through when I was there. Andsometimes I knew their fathers, having been to school with them, so we’d talk aboutthat. Very little was mentioned about fundraising.

“It was as soft a sell as you could get, and very effective,” said Dr. Sankoff, who

Our donors’ consistent and generoussupport to the Faculty of Dentistry isan important source of encouragementto everyone in the Faculty. Theyunder-stand how much McGill hasoffered its students and how importantthat experience proved to be. Theirsupport ensures that today’s students– and those of tomorrow – willcontinue to benefit from an equallyexceptional education.

This past fall, we welcomed 29 newundergraduates and 25 new graduatestudents and residents to Dentistry atMcGill. They will benefit from pastsupport to the Alma Mater Fund, which enabled the Faculty to acquiretraining simulators for operativedentistry for the Strathcona StudentLabs, and also supported StudentTable Clinic presentations held at theMontreal General Hospital.

Last year we moved ahead in several key areas :

• Our Outreach Program expanded.Existing programs at Sun Youth andJewish Family Services are still inoperation, and our mobile facilitiesnow also offer dental services to home-less teenagers (Le bon Dieu dans larue) and children of low-incomefamilies (at St. Gabriel School in PointSt. Charles).

• Operations of our Student DentalClinic, situated in McGill’s newWilliam and Mary Brown StudentServices Building, started upsuccessfully in April. One clinical unitis currently in place treating a largenumber of foreign and out-of-provincestudents. We hope to install a secondunit shortly.

• We created a new graduate fellowship(Dr. Yu-Ming Lam Fellowship) and twoscholarships (the Dr. Yu-Ming LamEntrance Scholarship and the Dr. EarlLerner Faculty Scholarship). As soonas full funding is acquired, we hope tocreate the Dr. Howard S. KatzScholarship in honor of our formerAssociate Dean of Academic Affairswho passed away in December 1999.

• We continued to upgrade clinicalfacilities, incorporating audiovisual andcomputer equipment, computerizedpatient registration and treatmentplanning programs, and patientinformation literature and videos.

We could not have achieved any of thiswithout the flexibility made possible bythe gifts of graduates and friends.

In this context, gifts received in thisfund year (ending May 31, 2001) willconfirm the direction we are taking. We hope to continue in our efforts topromote quality education andcommunity service:

• We will create more undergraduatescholarships and graduate fellowshipsto attract the best students possible.

• We will continue to build ourcurriculum and expand pre-clinical andclinical teaching facilities.

• In addition, with your help, we willcreate new computer facilities at boththe Strathcona and Montreal GeneralHospital Clinic, andcontinuecomputerizingteachingmaterialsthrough theuse of Web andCD-Romtechnology.

• Another priority is to expand theOutreach Program to otherorganizations, and to finish financing avan that will serve as a truly mobiledental clinic. It will bring free dentalcare to those unable to visit theoutreach clinics.

Everyone’s continued support is vital to the progress we are making.Remember, every gift is essential if we are to continue providing anoutstanding dental education that is second to none.

Faculty Advisory Board Retirements and New Membership

In the fall of 2000, the Faculty acknowledged the retirement of six of its membersfrom the Faculty Advisory Board. The Faculty wishes to thank the following individuals, who faithfully served on the Board for more than three years, for their dedication, advice, encouragement and support: Dr. Kenneth Bentley, Mr. Purdy Crawford, Dr. RichardCruess, Mr. Claude Garcia, Dr. Norman Miller and Dr. Harry Rosen.

It is with great pleasure that the Faculty announces the recruitment of thefollowing new members to the Faculty Advisory Board, Business Group:

Mrs. Gail Johnson, BA’63, McGill Board of Governors

Mr. Alex Kalil, President, ADTEK Photomask, McGill Board of Governors

Mr. Jeremy Masters, President, Canada Maritime Agencies Ltd.

Mr. Keith Petrovsky, President, Montreal Thermo King Refrigeration Inc.

Mr. Christopher Winn, MBA’66, Venture Capitalist, Miralta Capital Inc.

Mrs. Pierrette Wong, Businesswoman

These people bring to the Faculty an invaluable connection to industry andthe community as a whole. Such connections are an opportunity to continue tobuild a strong foundation of support that will ultimately lead to enhancingteaching and research programs at all levels. The Faculty is therefore extremelygrateful to all its members for their contributions to the Faculty Advisory Board,Business and Dental Groups.

Anniversary classes boost the undergraduate teaching program

Second year students will now benefit from improved teaching resources with therecent installation of 30 mannequins, or "phantom heads" in the Strathcona Anatomyand Dentistry Building student lab. These solid, life-sized "phantom heads" will allowour students to develop the difficult psychomotor skills that our profession demandsand will make the transition to clinical practice easier and faster. The purchase of theseunits was made possible through contributions from the classes of '49, '59, '64, '69, '74,'79, '84 and '89 in the fund year '98-'99 and the classes of '50, '65, '70, '75, '80, '90 and'95 in '99-'00, on the occasion of their respective Anniversaries, together with a majordonation from Dr. and Mrs. (Jane K.) Coleman Gertler, on the occasion of his 50thClass Anniversary in October 2000. The students and staff are extremely grateful forthe generous support provided by these classes; this initiative once again demonstratesthe importance of private giving in enhancing teaching programs, which is a majorpriority within the Faculty.

In 1999-2000, the rate of participation in Dentistry was once again second among all faculties and schools, behind Medicine. Needless to say, we want to be first!! Thereforeplease keep in mind that when sending in your gift, you should designate it specifically to the Faculty of Dentistry.

In recognizing the significant role you play inhelping the Faculty of Dentistry be the best it canbe, the Faculty wishes to offer a heartfelt “thankyou” for your generous support in 1999-2000 andto assure you that your gift does make a difference. We also want to thank the many volunteers who

generously donated their time and energy to raisingawareness and helping to increase private support.Without you, fund raising would be an impossibletask and without you, the Faculty would not bewhere it is today. We are therefore honored to recognize the

following donors who supported the Faculty ofDentistry between June 1, 1999 and May 31, 2000.For the first time this year, we are recognizing giftsto Dentistry according to categories defined by theMcGill Donor Circles:
