Learn About the Latest Approaches in COPD, Asthma

C OPD and asthma are ranked the highest by ATS International Conference attendees as their topics

of interest, which is reflected in the many sessions that will be available at ATS 2015. In the ATS 2015 Exhibit Hall, attendees will learn more about options that will help them diagnose and treat these and other respira-tory conditions.

In Booth 639, Boston Scientific Corpora-tion will showcase the Alair Bronchial Ther-moplasty System, the first FDA-approved non-drug therapy for adult patients with severe asthma. 

Methapharm, Inc. in Booth 647 will offer two new training videos to help professionals maintain best practices in asthma diagnostics, either through training of new technicians or refreshing the more experienced individu-als. The first covers “Mixing Methacholine Dilutions for Bronchoprovocation Challenge Testing,” and the second video is “Performing a Methacholine Challenge Test.”

Nonin Medical Inc. will present its white paper on active co-management of acute and chronic COPD phases in Booth 937. The company also is able to make arrangements to introduce you to industry experts and provide a sneak peek of its new COPD Patient Hospi-tal 30-Day Readmission Reduction Program.

Novartis Pharma AG will present an Industry Theater from 1 to 1:45 p.m. on Monday, May 18, to help attendees become up to date in the rapidly evolving COPD therapy area by exploring the latest evidence in the management of COPD, including clinical data from the most recent trials in dual bronchodilation. The program will look closely at current practice, discuss consider-

ations related to the delivery and regimens of inhaled therapies, and present evidence on the risks and benefits of inhaled corticoste-roids in COPD. Please note that due to local regulations, this program is only available to non-U.S. based physicians. Novartis Pharma-ceuticals will be in Booth 745.

PneumRx, Inc., Booth 321, will host a series of Ask-the-Expert sessions with leaders in interventional pulmonology to discuss their experiences in treating patients with severe emphysema with the innova-tive RePneuEndobronchial Coil System. Physicians from the United States, Germany, France, and other countries will be available to answer questions about patient selection, follow-up, mechanism of action, the role of coil therapy in emphysema management, as well as proctor coil demonstrations.

Testing, Testing: Devices for the Field or Office

ECO MEDICS in Booth 1659 will exhibit the EXHALYZER D system for perform-ing the nitrogen multiple-breath washout (N2MBW) test for the determination of the LCI value. The measurement gives a quantitative calculation of the nonhomoge-neity of the lungs and gas dispersion, and it is intended for researchers examining the effectiveness of certain medications and procedures as well as the baseline capability of an individual in a research setting. ECO MEDICS notes that the software is easy to use and the hardware is robust.

Additionally, ECO MEDICS offers the CLD 88 exhaled and nasal NO analyzer sys-tem. Measuring ppb concentrations of nitric oxide, either as exhaled breath, or from

the nose, its system is a fast and accurate analyzer, ECO MEDICS notes. The DENOX 88 is used to provide NO-free air to breathe for the measurements and also to provide a resistance against which to exhale.

MedQIA and ClinAssist LLC in Booth 449 have entered into a strategic partner-ship and will showcase computer vision systems that semi-automatically and ob-jectively detect, measure, and analyze ana-tomic, biologic, and pathogenic signals.

Vitalograph Ltd. in Booth 445 is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its lightweight desktop spirometer, the Vitalograph ALPHA. More than 30,000 ALPHAs have been sold since being launched, Vitalograph notes. After four generations of the device, ALPHA con-tinues to win new fans who are attracted to its ease of use, speed, and accuracy, the company notes.

ATS PAR Path: Connect with the Patient Perspective

P atients and their families are cen-tral to the mission, activities, and programs of the ATS. Throughout

the conference, patients will share their experiences during select symposia to add their perspectives to highly technical topics. Attendees will also be able to connect with patient interest groups involved in the ATS Public Advisory Roundtable (ATS PAR) in the Exhibit Hall at the ATS PAR Path.

ATS PAR, which was established in 2001, is a partnership with organizations rep-resenting persons affected by respiratory diseases, sleep-related conditions, or related

critical illnesses. The group collaborates with the ATS to advance shared educational, research, patient care, and advocacy goals.

Organizations taking part in the ATS PAR Path will provide information about how they might assist your patients. One such or-ganization is the ATS PAR partner the LAM Foundation, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. For the past two decades, the LAM Foundation has funded more than 105 projects, including the MILES Trial, the first treatment trial for LAM. Learn more about them in Booth 815.

FOR YOUR PATIENTS AND YOU: MEET-THE-EXPERTS

The ATS PAR will host its ninth annual Meet-the-Experts patient-family forum during ATS 2015. The event gives patients the opportunity to learn from and speak with leading physicians, researchers, and community organizers about specific disease topics. This year’s event will focus on “Lungs and Environmental Health,” and will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Plaza Ballrooms and Governors Square, Con-course Level, 1550 Court Place.

After presentations from seven physicians, attendees will take part in breakout sessions focusing on pulmonary hypertension, LAM/tuberous sclerosis, sarcoidosis, scleroderma, pulmonary fibrosis, rare lung diseases, children’s ILD, and Alpha-1 (A1AD). The seven experts participating will be available to answer questions.

PracticeLink’s workshops include a panel of expert in-house recruiters who cover topics such as curriculum vitae tips; preparing for a site visit; Federation Credentials Verifica-tion Service licensing and credentialing; and questions to ask during the interview process.

Experts will outline a timeline to help navigate a job search smoothly. In-house recruiters from hospitals, private practices, and medical groups from across the U.S. also attend those events, which are free of charge. ATS attendees will be able to view a list of participating locations and RSVP in PracticeLink’s booth.

ear-care products, and Restorative Therapies in Booth 6215 will launch RT300-Supine cycle, a product for critical care. RT300-Supine cycle provides early rehabilitation via leg and arm cycling from a bed. It is ideal for use in the ICU and acute rehabilitation settings. The design fits the cycle over and around the bed, allowing RT300 to be brought to the patient. The height is adjustable via a motorized table.

MGC Diagnostics in Booth 334 will an-nounce the release of the Ultima Series CPX and Pulmonary Function system designed to improve patient care by maximizing the tech-nologist/patient interface and improve testing accuracy and workflow. The system has been ergonomically designed to perform exercise tests while standing or pulmonary tests while sitting, with a work area for both.

In Booth 651, MIR–Medical International Research will present two new products: Spirobank II Smart and Spirolab. Spirobank II Smart is an iSpirometry and iOximetry app that includes data transfer to a cloud sys-tem for backup or second-opinion facility. Spirolab is a portable desktop spirometer with oximetry option and seven-inch touchscreen. It offers a database for up to 10,000 spirom-etry tests or 900 hours of oximetry recording coupled with search services.

Bruker BioSpin in Booth 1150 launched the SkyScan 1278 micro-CT system for in vivo X-ray computed tomography. The technology

addresses the needs of preclinical imaging scientists who aim to reduce the radiation dose used in animal studies while maintain-ing image quality. As part of the development, Bruker has created a new micro-CT spatial beam shaper, which reduces the absorbed dose by up to five times while maintaining quality image output.

PneumaCare in Booth 220 will show its Thora-3Di imaging device featuring Struc-tured Light Plethysmography technology. New this year, representatives will share a compact version, which gives the same results and outputs as the Thora-3Di but can be transported as a portable device, which enables its use in more remote areas.

In Booth 639, Boston Scientific Corpora-tion will showcase its Ultraflex Tracheobron-chial Partially Covered Stent System. In its up-dated form, the stent has a silicone covering and is provided to customers sterile.

provides a noninvasive therapy that simulates

a cough to remove secretions in patients with

compromised peak cough flow. 

Veracyte in Booth 1250 will showcase a test

designed to reclassify the risk of lung cancer in

patients with a nondiagnostic bronchoscopy,

enabling patients with low-risk lung nodules to

avoid unnecessary invasive procedures and be

monitored with CT scans instead. Avrum Spira,

MD, MSc, professor of medicine at Boston Uni-

versity, will be at the Veracyte booth to discuss

the genomic test and the latest data supporting

its use. Veracyte also will highlight development

progress with the first genomic test to resolve

diagnostic ambiguity in IPF and other ILDs us-

ing bronchoscopy samples.
