The DSA Bands Department works from two large stylistic genres; classical and jazz. All students need the technical and musical training that the classical cannon offers and jazz synthesizes this technical ability to improvisational skill. Jazz is America’s music offering students an opportunity to learn its value as one of the most creative art forms and to understand why it occupies a place among the great musical genres of the world.

Bands Fall Showcase 2013 The Bands Major at DSA is based on admittance into one of two large, classically based, wind band ensembles; Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. The student musicians work in a highly creative, collaborative fashion in order to perform in an artistically beautiful way, presenting music that is balanced, technically demanding and seamless.

Student musicians are trained to think in divergent thought patterns; each individual sound must contribute to the section and each section sound has to blend with the whole. Students are trained with communication to the audience being the entire paramount goal, but this process allows students to be open to fresh, challenging ideas leading to intellectual and emotional growth.
