Americans pay tribute on this Memorial Day to those who fell in battle defending our country. Theobservance had its beginnings following the Civil War when Southerners marked the graves of those who diedfighting for the Confederacy. Today, we honor all of America’s war dead. The program at the 57th AnnualInter-Veterans Memorial Day Service began with a Veterans Tribute Concert, then Hallie Williams (Directorof American Legion Post 143) gave the opening remarks. Representing Camp Dixon were Adjutant Gale Red,1st Lt Commander, Ron Lakin, and Lady Janice Beasley (and her dog, R. Lee).

IT IS THE VETERAN

It is the Veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedomto assemble.

It is the Veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

Today, as we reflect upon these words, may we remember the dead whohave paid the ultimate price for us. May we remember all those whohonorably served the nation and those who are currently serving.
