CAMP DIXON MEETING MINUTES ~ AUGUST 11, 2015 Muster (Continued)

NEW BUSINESS (continued).- HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE MOVEMENT OF CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL AT FOREST PARK? (Larry Marsh). Adjutant Red

responded that the plan is to have it not reach its destination intact. And that’s the plan for all the Confederate monuments being“moved.” We must communicate with our legislators. We all must get involved. If you come across an article of particular interest to us,please let me know so I can send it out.

- CAMP DIXON ANNUAL SPRING BALL, MARCH 2016 (Adjutant Red). No comments from the meeting attendees. Don’t know if weshould plan for another Ball due to so much work and a small amount of camp participation. Must push for 100 people. CommanderKicklighter said this is a discussion item for the weekend Executive Session.

- CONFEDERATE CATECHISM (Commander Kicklighter). Gale Red sent this out. I purchased a $7 volume and will present this to RonLakin for his achievements.

FORMAL PRESENTATION.Compatriot Larry Marsh from the Sterling Price Camp honored us with a briefing on his passion andcollection relics titled “Confederate Currency.” Highlights follow:- Using a Nuvell Visual Education Production (reference book titled Financial Failure andConfederate Defeat), Larry showed us many slides of Confederate money and said that he finds itsurprising that the politically incorrect Confederate issue of the battle flag has created an increasein value of Confederate currency. A $1,000 Confederate note retails for $30-$75,000 today. Butthere’s not much currency available. From 85-95% of Confederate dollars has been destroyed dueto mildew, rats eating it, and children playing/destroying it.- In the beginning of printing, most printers were made in England. During 1861-1863, a billiondollars of Confederate money was issued. Sounds like a lot of currency but things weren’t the waythey should have been. The inflation rate was incredible and Confederate money was never madelegal tender. This was a big mistake because no one was forced to accept it as such.- Larry said if you invested in Confederate money years ago, you would be rich today according to today’s worth:

Confederate Note Today’s Worth$10 $135$25 $595$50 $35,000$500 (red) $1,500$1,000 $30,000-75,000

- There were two ways of printing notes: (1) Steel engraving, done with steel, a dying art of engraving ~ more precise and detailed ~ and(2) lithograph (similar to a mimeograph) which didn’t take long to make the notes. All notes were signed by hand by different people inorder to avoid counterfeiting.- There were a total of 4 ½ years of different notes that were printed.- In the 1940’s and 1950’s, Confederate money was printed on the back of Cheerio boxes ~ worth $25-75 today.- Export was very important to the South. That’s why nautical, military and slave scenes were printed on Confederate currency. Redcoloring was added to the notes to avoid counterfeiting. Notes printed in limited amounts on poor paper are very valuable today.Alexander Stevens (who hated Jefferson Davis) appeared on the $50 notes. Vignettes appeared on the notes when quality of paper wasbetter.REFRESHMENTS were provided by Compatriot Mark Morgan.BENEDICTION by Commander Kicklighter.ADJOURNMENT at 8:30 p.m.NEXT MEETING. Tuesday, September 8, 2015, 6:30 p.m., same location. Presentation by Compatriot Bill Boyd: “2d Georgia VolunteerInfantry.” Lady Sharon Red will bring refreshments.

Respectfully submitted,

By Compatriot J. C. Gideon

The Belleville IL Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution

(DAR) has been researching the life and final resting place of Captain Joseph

Ogle for well over 20 years. As a major figure in the American Revolution and

an early St. Clair County pioneer and community leader, he will finally have a

permanent memorial in the county that was his home. Believed to be the first

Methodist in the Illinois territory, Captain Ogle helped found the Shiloh

United Methodist Church. His grave has been lost over the many years since

1821, but the DAR feels certain that he was most likely buried at the site of

the original Shiloh Methodist Church. The word “Shiloh” is used in naming

several Methodist Churches and is believed to mean “a place of peace.”

The Ogle Family Association, a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to

the research and preservation of the history and genealogy of the Ogles and

related Ogle families all over the world. They have an excellent web site and

family newsletter. A meeting of the association and family reunion will be held

in St. Louis MO in September 2015. Family members will be at the ceremony

to be held on Sunday, September 27, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the cemetery in

Shiloh IL. This ceremony is one of Camp Dixon’s scheduled events, and all

members are encouraged to attend and honor this local legend.
