Reflection

A very warm welcome back to term 3. The reflection below was found in the pocket of a sol-dier who died in the American civil war. It expresses the hopes of the young man and the lessons he learned in his short life. In reading the reflection it enables us to pause and reflect on how God guides us and responds to our prayers.

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve. I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey…

I asked for health, that I might do greater things; I was given infirmity, that I might do better things…

I asked for riches, that I might be happy; I was given poverty, that I might be wise…

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of people, I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God…

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life, I was given life that I might enjoy all things…

I got nothing that I asked for—but everything I hoped for. Almost, despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

I am among people, most richly blessed.

From the Principal Also congratulations to the following Year 12 students who have now completed three terms of their HSC course with perfect attendance:

Trial Higher School Certificate Examinations Currently Year 12 students are in the middle of their Trial HSC examinations and we wish them every success. It is the final com-ponent of their assessment program and an opportunity to gain experience of what it will be like to sit the HSC exams next term. I want to congratulate Year 12 on their preparation and commitment to their studies that they have shown in the lead up to the Trials. It is important that students remain focussed in the coming months, seeking feedback from these examinations and working together to support each other in the final stages of their schooling. Australian Catholic Youth Festival Just a reminder to Parents the Australian Catholic Youth Festival is taking place at Homebush in December. We are currently finalising numbers. If your son/daughter has not registered, there is still time to do so. Please contact Mrs O’Connor if you would like more details and I strongly encourage you to discuss with your child their attendance at this fantastic event. College Retreat Last week Year 11 participated in the Senior Retreat at Stanwell Tops. The staff were extremely impressed by the manner in which the students entered into the activities and small group discussions. We hope and believe from student feedback this faith formation opportunity has been an enriching experience for your sons and daughters. My thanks to Father Julian from St Aloysius Parish who celebrated Mass with us on the Thursday night and offered to the students the sacrament of Reconciliation. Also my thanks to the staff who gave of their time to ensure our students had this valuable experience.

Year 12 have made a very positive start to their HSC Trial Exams. The HSC Trial examinations started Week 2 Thursday 27th July and con-tinue through to Week 5 Tuesday 15th August inclusive. Students must attend their exams as indicated on the schedule in full school uniform (you may wear the College jersey) with the equipment they require. Students are not required to attend school between exams however, the library will be open for students’ use from 7am – 5pm to support their exam preparation. Year 11 have also made a fantastic start to the term with their friendly and enthusiastic participation in a variety of experiences during the College Retreat. I would like to congratulate them on their inclusive and whole-hearted participation in all the Retreat activities in-cluding Reconciliation and our Mass. This term for Year 11 requires dedication and effort in learning new content and revising what they have learnt in their courses over the year in their selected pathways. The last two weeks of this term they will sit their final Preliminary examinations. Students must com-plete the coursework for each subject they study in a diligent manner to satisfy the requirements of the NSW Education Standards Au-thority (NESA) to obtain a Preliminary Certificate. This Preliminary Certificate is a mandatory requirement to begin the Higher School Certificate (HSC) course work for each subject in a student’s chosen HSC pathway. Year 11 students will be sitting NESA multiple-choice test on Critical Thinking Skills next Wednesday afternoon in the Hall. They will need to ensure they have their computers with them and they will be given an online login to complete the 90-minute task. There will be no early leave on this afternoon for any Year 11 student. This test is being conducted by NESA and all Year 11 students in NSW will be sitting this online test. Results for the test will be used as research by NESA who are looking for ways to improve critical thinking skills of secondary students in order to better prepare them for university and the workforce. In early Term 4 students will receive a soft copy report which will give feedback on their performance. A reminder with the increasing number of our students driving to school, to be careful and courteous when driving and parking in the local area. We have had a number of complaints from local residents and those dropping or picking up their children from local Primary schools in the area about excessive speeding. Many of our local streets are restricted to 50km and include schools zones requiring 40km restrictions. I would ask parents to revisit this topic for discussion with their sons and daughters.

I would like to congratulate the Year 11 students on the way they entered into the spirit of the 2017 College Retreat. Students worked closely with their teachers in small groups exploring the many challenges they face in their lives as they approach Year 12 and beyond. The staff shared a number of their life experiences and together they looked at ways to be both positive and resilient in all facets of their lives. The students participated in many activities with College staff, and the physical challenges provided by the Outdoor Recrea-tion Team similarly focused on team building and challenging oneself. I congratulate both the students and the staff on the way they entered into the spirit of this Retreat and I am also excited about the way the Year group were able to bond with one another and the Staff.

This term we begin to recruit potential Catechists who will take the College Cat-echist program into its 10th year. Year 11 students will be invited to an infor-mation session and current Year 12 Catechists will also speak about their in-volvement in weekly 30 minute lessons with Kinder, Year 1 or Year 2 students. All students are trained and supplied with specific lessons. The program is very popular and I encourage you to discuss this option with your sons and daugh-ters. Students in Studies of Religion are able to include the hours in the Touch-ing Hearts program and students of Catholic Studies are able to use this as part of their course work.

On the 9th August we are hosting students from the Archdiocese who will become Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. These students are required to provide an endorsement from their Parish Priest. Please discuss this opportunity with your son or daughter.

News from Youth Ministry Coordinator

Fr Rob Galea On the 23rd June, ten De La Salle Cronulla students, joined with students from OLMC and De La Salle Caringbah in attending a Youth concert at St John Bosco, Engadine. The night was an opportunity for students to hear the won-derful voice and stories of Fr Rob Galea. Many people may remember Fr Rob as the priest who made it to the second round of X Factor in 2015. The students experienced a powerful and moving concert full of hope and in-spiration. The students came away singing and enthused to be Catholic. It certainly was a great bus trip home. This was the first taste of what our students will experience at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival later in the

year. Sydney Catholic Schools also organised Reconciliation by Fire. Many students were able to receive this healing sacrament in the most beautiful setting by the number of fire pits that were around Bosco oval. It was a fantastic experience and one that our students will remember. I know for a fact that Fr Rob now has many new followers on instagram and snapchat and are keenly following him on social media.

Care and Concern On Saturday 29th of July, six Year 11 and 12 students attended the St Aloysius Parish’s Care and Concern Christmas in July dinner. I have never been so proud of our students who attended this night. Not only had our Year 11 students just returned from Year 11 retreat but also our Year 12s were heading into their Trial HSC Examination block. Our students participated in this evening with compassion and companionship. Care and Concern is a St Aloysius initiative that invites the poor, homeless and those that are disadvantaged from the par-ish community to share in a meal that is donated from members of the parish community. Our students helped serve drinks, dinner and even helped Santa hand out Christmas gifts. Our students, although challenged, loved every mo-ment of the night and will definitely be back for future dinners.

Captiv8 Primary Evangelisation Day Thank you to Mia Flokis who attended the Captiv8 Primary Evangelisation Day at Bringelly last term. Mia helped as a small group leader and shared her experiences of faith with our local primary school students. Thank you to Miss O’Brian from Our Lady of Fatima who was the supervising teacher of the Day. This was a wonderful leadership opportunity for Mia who was a great representative of our College. ACYF - Australian Catholic Youth Festival The final day for registration for ACYF is fast approaching. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet with young adults from all around Australia and to experience the best Christian speakers and musicians from around Australia and the world. It is a 3 day festival beginning on the 7 December through to the 9 December. It is a requirement for those students who are not attending the festi-val to remain at school for these days. It is expected that as part of the faith formation of our leaders and Lasallian Youth Leaders that these students attend the festival. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

What does the Festival Involve?

Please contact Mrs O’Connor if you have any questions or alternatively, check out the ACYF website for a run down of the festival. http://youthfestival.catholic.org.au/

High Tea

In the words of John Baptist De La Salle we are ‘engaged in a ministry wherein you are obliged to touch hearts’. On Saturday the 24th June this was clearly evidenced. The kindness and generosity of our community was inspiring. The Lasallian and Mercy High Tea was held on Saturday at De La Salle Catholic College, Cronulla to raise funds for the Lasallian Foundation and Mercy Works. We welcomed staff from De La Salle Cronulla, De La Salle Caringbah and Our Lady of Mercy College Burraneer, students and ex-students, parents, and members of the parish. We had over 140 tickets sold! The money raised will go to our partner school Lasalle Girls High School Gokkuwal in Pakistan and Mercy Works. Since 2008, the Lasalli-an Foundation has worked with the school to improve the classrooms and infrastructure. In 2012, the school upgraded to a High School, supported by a Lasallian Foundation grant in early 2009 that facilitated the purchase of more land and to build additional classrooms. The community here are very poor and gypsies have a settlement nearby. The housing is very very basic made of bricks with mud ce-ment and often they have no or very poorly constructed roofs. The funds that were raised for this community will dramatically help this school cover the costs of utilities, teachers' salaries, maintenance, support for school fees and other essential school expenses.

A special thanks also to Br Colin Griffin, who spoke about his work with the Pakistan community and Sr Ailsa McKinnon from Mercy Works who also took the time to speak. This is a testament to the amazing Lasallian and Mercy community that we belong to.

From the Curriculum Coordinator YEAR 12 The Trial HSC examinations began last week with the Senior Science practical examinations. Written exams began on Monday this week with English Paper 1 and will conclude on Tuesday 15th August with the General Mathematics 2, Mathematics (3 hrs) and Mathematics Extension 2 examinations. Normal classes will resume for all students on Wednesday 16th August. Drama students will complete their practical examination by appointment on this day. It is very pleasing to note the number of students who attended before and after school classes, or who emailed or met with their teachers in lunch breaks in preparation for their Trial HSC examinations. Many students are also taking advantage of the College li-brary, and continue to work individually and collaboratively in support of each other in their learning. A reminder to all Year 12 parents and students: Students who are absent from any examinations due to illness must follow the Col-lege assessment procedures regarding documentation and parents are asked to notify the College on the morning of an examination should their son/daughter not be in attendance for any reason. It is expected that a student who is absent from an examination, where applicable, will sit for a ‘makeup’ examination as close to the original examination date as possible. This is normally the day after the medical certificate, or other relevant documentation expires. A reminder that a copy of the Trial HSC examination timetable was issued to all students and parents via email. The timetable is also available on the College website. It is important to note that the final HSC examinations are also imminent for a number of students in a variety of courses which in-clude a practical component or major project. Design and Technology Major Design Projects, and Visual Arts Major Works are due for submission and are being examined by the NESA (BOSTES) markers. Music and Drama students are scheduled to undertake the individual and group performances component of their HSC examination. Extension 2 English and Extension History projects are due for completion and are to be submitted for marking. Language students are due to complete the oral component of their Language exam, and Dance students are about to com-plete their Dance practical examination. NESA (BOSTES) HSC Confirmation of Entry: As a matter of urgency, all Year 12 students must check that their particulars ( personal and contact details, courses studied, eligibility requirements for HSC and ATAR) are up to date by logging on to the NESA (BOSTES) website (students online). This responsibility lies with the individual student. Students must see me asap to rectify any anomalies.

All Year 12 students will be receiving a copy of the 2018 (Universities Admissions Centre) UAC Guide once they return to normal clas-ses after their Trial HSC examinations. The UAC Guide, provides comprehensive information on approximately 1,600 undergraduate courses available for study in 2018 at participating institutions. The UAC Guide also includes information on application procedures, finance for study, accommodation and career options. All students should be receiving their UAC PIN in the upcoming weeks. This PIN is essential for them to be able to apply. If students have not received their UAC PIN, by the end of August, they must contact UAC immediately on 1300 275 822 (from mobiles on (02) 9752 0200) between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday. YEAR 11 Year 11 students will be required to complete two more assessment tasks this term for most courses. This will be made up of in class, hand in or practical tasks as well as the Preliminary examinations, which are scheduled for the last two weeks of this term. It is essential that students make the most of this term as these tasks represent the final formal assessment components of the Prelimi-nary HSC course.

The Trial HSC is well underway and I hope all is going well at home with your son/daughter as they prepare for these important exams. Most of the exams go for three hours so they need to be prepared both mentally and physically. Can I remind parents that our rules on uniform and grooming apply during this exam period as well. The only exception is that they are allowed to wear the College jersey if they wish. Boys must still wear a tie with the jersey.

When the Trial exams finish on August 15, attendance is still expected in all lessons. Most subjects have not finished the content of their courses, so it’s imperative to be at school. History tells us that those last few weeks of Term 3 are so very important for prepara-tion for the HSC.

Peter Geaney Year 12 Coordinator

Well I am pleased to report that the Year 11 cohort have returned to Term Three with energy and enthusiasm. They seem settled and working on completing Assessment Tasks as well building their revision and exam preparation skills. Students were surveyed at the end of Term Two and on Wednesday August 9 the whole year group will have the opportunity to select a study skills / pastoral activity that will help them achieve the goals they have set for themselves here at the College. The Year 11 College Retreat on Thursday July 27 and Friday July 28 was a huge success. Students participated in a range of spiritual, social and physical challenges that were designed to relate specifically to where they are in their journey here at the College. Student Wellbeing is a key part of our Pastoral focus and we are very aware of the added pressure mobile phones place on our students. I wish to congratulate those students who were able to ‘let go’ of their phones for the whole Retreat, as this was one of the challenges we gave the year group. We are looking forward to hearing from students, so they will be given the opportunity to reflect and feedback to us about their Retreat experience. There are a number of students who will be presented with 100% attendance certificates at our next assembly. We have expressed the importance of regular attendance for students to reach their full potential. At this time, it is important to remind parents of the process in place for students who are regularly late to school or decide not to attend classes. Students will be required to catch up the missed class work on Wednesday afternoons from 3-4pm. Most students are following the College uniform policy but I would like to remind parents that we expect that students arrive and leave the College in the correct uniform. If you are unsure of the College expectations they are listed in the College diary. There are a few students who have been given notification to correct their uniform; this includes haircuts, being clean-shaven, the wearing of a nose ring or more than one earring. I thank parents for their continued support as we work together to develop the young adults at the College.

Each year a student from De La Salle is nominated for the Pierre De Coubertin award for excellence in the sporting field. This year, Daniel Kerr in Year 11 was our nomination. Daniel is an outstanding waterpolo player and was recently selected in the Australian schoolboys team. Daniel has the potential to reach Olympic level in his sport and displays all the assets of a great competitor. These are photos of Daniel at the awards ceremony, held last term. Daniel will be recognised again at the end-of-year assembly. Congratulations!
