FOREWORD
Bioinformatics is setting a new pace for biotechnologyresearch by reducing the lead time for various processesinvolved in the chain of biotechnology research anddevelopments like assignment of the gene/ protein function, locating of the similar gene sequences in different organisms, selection and online testing of the potential drug targetsand so on. Growth of bioinformatics has acceleratedparticularly during the last decade due to path breakingadvancement in biology and new technologies that producehuge data like high throughput full genome sequencingprojects including the human genome and other genomeprojects. The data mining and analysis of such large dataand extract of knowledge from this data is being madepossible only with the help of new software tools andcomputational intensive techniques. The researchers need tolearn and use all new technological developments whichare taking place in bioinformatics to solve complex biologicalproblems leading to advancement in health care and cropimprovement systems to facilitate overall growth andimprovement.
The Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India hasestablished a nationwide bioinformatics network in Indianamely Biotechnology Information System Network(BTISnet) in 1987. The main purpose of this network is to
harness the scientific knowledge for rapid advancement inbiotechnology and sustainable utilization of the biologicalresources. Since bioinformatics is an important area, its usagehas become inevitable to the research community who areengaged in molecular biology and biotechnology. In orderto impart training to the researchers and research scholarswith innovative development in bioinformatics, theBioinformatics centres under the BTISnet are organizingvarious short term training courses during 2006-07.
Eighty five such selective trainings have been planned forthis year and are listed in this publication. The trainingswere evolved by understanding the current demand andI’m sure these short term courses will be highly useful forunderstanding various latest developments in different fieldsof Bioinformatics. The publication is also accessible fromour website http://www.btisnet.gov.in.

PREFACE
The Biotechnology Information System Network (BTISnet)is a major distributed bioinformatics network established bythe Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in the year1987. The network spread across the country with varioussubject specialization in biotechnology. Large informationresources have been collated and developed as databasesincluding several useful software packages for biotechnologyapplications. The network provides biotechnologyinformation services, trained human resources andcomputational facilities to R&D, Educational and industrialorganizations.
The network has been geared up to undertake advancedresearch in frontier areas of biotechnology with the intensiveapplication of bioinformatics, develop world class humanresource in bioinformatics, establish effective academia-industry interface, pursue and promote internationalcooperation with leading institutions, organizations and tocreate world class platforms for technology development, transfer and commercialization.
Human resource development in bioinformatics is animportant activity for effective sustenance of thebioinformatics activities. For meeting the need of trainedbioinformatics professionals, long term courses are being
dealt by several reputed Universities and institutions, whichare as part of this programme.
The BTISnet centres are organizing several short term training/workshop programme on bioinformatics in major six subjectareas in bioinformatics namely Bioinformatics analysis inBiotechnology, Bioinformatics in Animal & AgricultureBiotechnology, Bioinformatics & Biodiversity Environment,Bioinformatics in Genomics, Proteomics & In Silico DrugDesign, Computational, System Biology & general topics andInternational workshop/ conference on bioinformatics. All thesedetails are compiled in this publication. We take this opportunityto thank all our coordinators of BTISnet centres for theirvaluable inputs and the cooperation extended for bringing outthis publication. We do believe that this publication will behighly useful to the target groups. The electronic version ofthis publication is also available on http:// www.btisnet.gov.in.
