Gujarat State is well known for the entrepreneurial skills and business acumen of its people all
over the world. Ahmedabad, the biggest city of Gujarat, is a vibrant and prosperous city which
excels in every sphere of creative and economic activity, besides being a historical city. This
historical city of Ahmedabad was founded on the banks of Sabarmati in the year 1411 A.D. by
King Ahmed Shah, after whom the city has been named. The city has a rich and flourishing
heritage, cultural vibrancy and modern industries. Ahmedabad is also known for the freedom
movement and inspiring leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. It was from the
Sabarmati Ashram located here that Mahatma Gandhi launched his famous Dandi March.
The city of Ahmedabad, which was known as the Manchester of East due to its innumerable textile
mills, has since diversified into various other sectors such as Information Technology, Pharma
sector, etc. The city is fortunate to have a very inspiring intellectual environment through well-
known institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management, Information and Library Network
(INFLIBNET), National Institute of Design, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Physical
Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association, Institute of Plasma
Research, Space Applications Centre etc. These institutions have given an international colour and
culture to the city. Among these institutions, Gujarat University also finds a place of pride catering
to the higher education needs of the students of Gujarat.
THE GUJARAT UNIVERSITY
The Gujarat University was conceived in the nineteen twenties in the minds of public-spirited and
learned men like Gandhiji, Sardar Patel, Acharya Anandshankar B. Dhruva, Dada Saheb
Mavlankar, Kasturbhai Lalbhai and many others. However, the University could come into
existence only after the achievement of independence in 1949. The University was incorporated
under the Gujarat University Act of the State Government as a teaching and affiliating University.
This was done as a measure of decentralization and reorganization of University education in the
then Province of Mumbai.
During the courses of its life of more than five decades, the University has been the establishment
of seven more Universities which were carved out of the jurisdiction of the Gujarat University,
viz., Sardar Patel University, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar University, South Gujarat
University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Gujarat Agricultural University and North Gujarat
4
University. Gujarat University is the largest university in the state catering to the needs of the
higher education which is evident from successfully running 350 colleges. In addition to this, the
university has to its credit 34 post graduate departments offering more than 50 different Post

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) established by the University Grants
Commission (UGC) accredited the University with the grade B++. The motto of University is a
Sanskrit subhashita from Bhagvad Gita “Yoga Karmsu Kaushalam “, which means “Balance in
life is accomplished through proficiency & mastery in work.” It is the largest and biggest
University in state comprising of 19 districts and has a radius of 1000 kms.
