Introduction

MSc

All MSc students must take 120 credits of taught modules in the academic year, followed by a

project worth 60 credits (progression to the project is contingent on passing enough taught modules

at the first attempt). All taught modules listed below are worth 15 credits. Most students take four

taught modules in each semester.

MSc with Management

Students on the three “with Management” MSc degrees study the first semester module MN7260,

“Academic Skills and Knowledge”. This module is compulsory, but does not carry any credits

towards the degree classification. All modules with codes starting MN are taught by the School of

Management, codes starting EG by the Department of Engineering. Students on these degrees take

six taught modules (including MN7260) in the first semester, and three taught modules in the

second semester.

MRes

MRes students take 60 credits of taught modules in the first semester (EG7083 “Professional Skills

for the Researcher”, taught by the Lifelong Learning Institute, and three Engineering modules). This

is followed by a 120-credit project and dissertation in the second semester and summer.

Options

If you have options, you should be aware of the following prerequisites for second semester

modules:

EG7018 (Embedded Systems for Condition Monitoring and Control) requires you to have studied

EG7014 (High Reliability Embedded Systems) in the first semester.

EG7029 (Computational Fluid Dynamics) requires you to have studied EG7026 (Advanced Fluid

Dynamics) in the first semester.

EG7035 (Electronically Controlled Motor Drives) requires you to have studied EG7034 (Electrical

Machines and Drives) in the first semester.

EG7017 (Real-Time Signal Processing) may only be chosen if you are also studying EG7016 (Design of

Discrete Systems) in the second semester. However, you may study EG7016 without also studying

EG7017.
