Wow, the semester is off to a running start! I am back from my maternity leave, and I cannot thank Michael Baske enough for helming the department in such a proficient and gracious way. In my absence a lot of planning has taken place. I am pleased to say that the department is abuzz with lots of guest speakers this month, many who have come to donate their me in order to interact with all of you, and share their experiences working in the field of film and media studies. Please check these pages for informaon on some excellent documentary screenings (both speakers are alumni working in New York and Saint Louis), two talks from members of our Professional Advisory Board, who consist of alumni working in the film and media industry or academe who are taking me out of their busy schedule to confer with us on curricular maers, news from the industry and how we might beer professionalize our students, and with fundraising efforts (watch this space for more on our efforts!). We hope you take advantage of all that these speakers have to offer. Who knows, maybe one of them, or a film you see, will change your perspecve. This is the power of film and media. But as majors, you knew that, right? We are hoping to bring a master editor to campus next semester for a workshop. Wow, the semester is off to a running start! I am back from my maternity leave, and I cannot thank Michael Baskett enough for helming the department in such a proficient and gracious way. In my absence a lot of planning has taken place.

I am pleased to say that the department is abuzz with lots of guest speakers this month, many who have come to donate their time in order to interact with all of you, and share their experiences working in the field of film and media studies. Please check these pages for information on some excellent documentary screenings (both speakers are alumni working in New York and Saint Louis), two talks from members of our Professional Advisory Board, who consist of alumni working in the film and media industry or academe who are taking time out of their busy schedule to confer with us on curricular matters, news from the industry and how we might better professionalize our students, and with fundraising efforts (watch this space for more on our efforts!).

We hope you take advantage of all that these speakers have to offer. Who knows, maybe one of them, or a film you see, will change your perspective. This is the power of film and media.

But as majors, you knew that, right?

We are hoping to bring a master editor to campus next semester for a workshop. If there are ideas out there for workshops, speakers, etc., please do not hesitate to contact me, [email protected], and we’ll see what we might do.

Best wishes,

Tamara Falicov

FMS Students Produce Rock Climbing Documentary

Submitted by Xin Li

On September 28, an 11-person KU student film crew followed rock climbers in a 24-hour rock climbing competition in Jasper, Arkansas to produce a documentary to reveal the spirit or rock climbing.

At the biggest national outdoor endurance rock climbing competition, the film crew pushed themselves through unfavorable weather conditions and sleep deprivation to film and conduct interviews for more than 30 hours.

Five crew members are KU alumni of Film and Media Studies and the others are students majoring in film studies, journalism, and business. The current KU students are also members of KU Documentary Film Society, a student film club.

Patrick Monroe, 2012 graduate of FMS, produced and directed the film. Monroe has also been the president of the club since it was born one year ago.

Monroe said it was not easy hauling the 120 pounds of filming equipment up and down the rocky paths, but it was good to see how well the crew held up.

“There were a few times when people would get tired and then I saw someone would pump them up and get energy around,” Monroe said. “We all worked pretty well together. Each one of us put so much work in it and I can tell it paid off.”

“The film is all about the sense of accomplishment, knowing your limits, and of what you are capable. It’s teaching people how to combat fears by testing their limits. It will be a feature-length piece. I want this documentary to be a calling card for our club to let more people know about us and help us grow.”

Monroe said he was planning to send the film to rock climbing and sports film festivals as soon as the production is finished by next spring.

WARRENSBURG, MO (Aug. 28/Oct. 10, 2012) – Eight feature films will lead a program of international works that will be presented at the Show Me Justice Film Festival, planned for October 17-20 on the campus of the University of Central Missouri. “A team of area residents, and university faculty and staff have combed through hundreds of films that were sub-mitted and put together a program that may very well change the lives of people who come to the film festival in profound ways,” said Mark von Schlemmer (Ph.D. 2010), festival director and assistant professor of communication at UCM. “I can't wait to share these films with everyone.” According to von Schlemmer, this year’s feature film lineup is spectacular and ranges from narrative films on animal rights and immigrant labor to documentaries on free speech and corporation owned radio. The festival’s schedule includes a high school filmmaking workshop on Thursday and a filmmaker roundtable on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Elliott Union on the UCM campus. Feature films, all of which will be shown in Hendricks Hall, include:

“Corporate FM,” directed by Kansas City-based film- maker Kevin McKinney. This documentary explores the shift from local to conglomerate radio and what happens when a city loses its communal microphone. McKinney will make at the festival.

“One Day After Peace” is directed by Miri and Erez Lauer. The documentary follows a mother’s journey through Israel and Palestine to South Africa, from a place of conflict, loss, and pain, to one of hope and possibilities for forgiveness.

“The After Party” is a documentary that explores world of domestic surveillance and restrictions on freedom of speech. The film is directed by Michael Schiller, who will attend the festival, and features appearances by President Barack Obama, Cornell West, and Andre ‘3000’ Benjamin. Director Michael Schiller will be at the festival.

“Difficult Love,” directed by Peter Goldsmid, who plans to attend the festival, and Zanele Muholi, offers a moving answer to the question of how real the freedoms of newly won democracy for Black, South African gays and lesbians are, as well as a compelling plea for understanding and tolerance. Director Peter Goldsmid will be at the festival.

“Lost Angels” is directed by Thomas Napper and explores how Los Angeles’ Skid Row, home to addiction, homelessness, and mental illness, is also home to hope, life, and community.

Show Me Justice Film Festival Announces Eight Feature Films

A work-in-progress screening of “Love Orchard” is a narrative feature about an estranged father and daughter. Directed by Farhad Mann, the film depicts how the father, played by Bruce Dern, and daughter, played by Kristana Loken, must mend their relationship in order to save a Mexican immigrant’s child from deportation. Directed Farhad Mann (Lawnmower Man 2, “Max Headroom” pilot episode), writer Chris Loken, and actress Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) will be in attendance.

“Dreaming Nicaragua” is directed by Marcelo Bukin and artistically portrays five children’s lives submerged in extreme poverty in Nicaragua. A member of Fabretto Children’s Foundation, the non-profit that produced the film, will be at the festival.

“A.L.F.” is a narrative feature directed by Jérôme Lescure. Bonded by empathy toward mistreated animals, a diverse group of ordinary people face the dilemma that when something has gone beyond the bounds of reason, you must forget about what is legal and care about what seems right. This narrative thriller explores the role of loyalty and betrayal in pursuit of one’s beliefs. Co-producer/actor Xavier Bonastre will be in attendance.

Tickets for feature films are $10 for the public and $5 for students. The public may pay the student rate if they bring two canned goods and students may receive free admission with two canned goods. Admission for members of the military and senior citizens is $5. Admission to the shorts programs are $5 and free to students. Tickets are available at the PAS Box Office or online at the festival website and at the screenings in Hendricks Hall. A complete schedule is also available at the website. Josh signed a 3-year distribution deal with Shorts International for A Light Opera to play on their TV channel Shorts HD. Shorts HD is on channel 568 on DirecTV and channel 1789 on AT&T U-verse.

Josh’s contract also includes Taiwan and Turkey, but A Light Opera has not aired in those countries yet. Josh is in the process of working on a contract amendment with Shorts International so A Light Opera can also be aired in Europe.
