April is Child Abuse AwarenessMonth! How Does Child Abuse Affectus All?
While child abuse and neglectusually occur within the family, theimpact does not end there. Societyas a whole pays a price for childabuse and neglect, in terms of bothdirect and indirect costs.Direct costs The lifetime cost ofchild maltreatment and relatedfatalities in 1 year totals $124 billion, according to a study funded by theCDC. Child maltreatment is morecostly on an annual basis than thetwo leading health concerns, strokeand type 2 diabetes (Xiangming,
Brown, Florence, & Mercy, 2012). On the other hand, programs thatprevent maltreatment have shown to be cost effective. The U.S. Triple PSystem Trial, funded by the CDC, has a benefit/cost ratio of $47 inbenefits to society for every $1 in program costs (Mercy, Saul, Turner, &McCarthy, 2011).
Indirect costs Indirect costs represent the longterm economicconsequences to society because of child abuse and neglect. Theseinclude costs associated with increased use of our healthcare system, juvenile and adult criminal activity, mental illness, substance abuse, anddomestic violence. Prevent Child Abuse America estimates that childabuse and neglect prevention strategies can save taxpayers $104 billioneach year. According to the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy(2011), every $1 spent on home visiting yields a $5.70 return oninvestment in New York, including reduced confirmed reports of abuse, reduced family enrollment in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families,

decreased visits to emergency rooms, decreased arrest rates formothers, and increasedmonthly earnings. One studyfound that all eight categoriesof adverse childhoodexperiences were associatedwith an increased likelihoodof employment problems, financial problems, andabsenteeism (Anda et al.,2004). The authors assertthat these longterm costs—to the workforce and tosociety—are preventable.Juvenile delinquency andadult criminality Severalstudies have documented thecorrelation between childabuse and future juveniledelinquency. Children who have experienced abuse are nine times morelikely to become involved
in criminal activities (Gold, Wolan Sullivan, & Lewis, 2011).Source: LongTerm Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglecthttps://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/factsheets/longtermconsequences/
