Environmental Design includes solutions that take into consideration the building elements and building
physics in the space. In other words, it considers the environmental factors of the interior such as lighting,
ventilation, thermal comfort, and does not exclude the visual comfort of the space from these factors;
meanwhile, it accepts the structural solutions in the space as an important spatial solution. At the same
time, it considers energy efficient design principles.

In offices in interior architecture, architecture or other design areas, they can act as designer and / or
practitioner as part of the team.
Interior designers wishing to offer freelance interior design and environmental design services, can design
and practice in their own offices, also can provide consultancy.
Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department graduates, can work in institutions in public sector such as municipalities, ministries, where the need for interior architect as an administrative or
technical staff;
They can work in kitchen, bathroom, lighting, furniture fittings and so on companies; as designer,
practitioner, salesperson or controller.
It is also possible for interior architects who focus on the academy to take place as educators and / or researchers in the universities.

UCTEA (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) Chambers of Interior
Architects started its activities as an association, and it was one of the first interior
architecture professional organizations in the World which passed onto the status of
chamber in 1976.
MEMBERSHIP
It is mandatory for interior architects who are legally entitled to practice their
professions and arts within the borders of Turkey to affiliate to the Chamber within
one month following their graduation and fulfill their obligations in order to carry out
their professional activities or to work in their profession or to be engaged in
educational activities related to the profession.

The inclusion of interior architects to the process of construction permit, in other words, the signing
authority in the process of construction permit, has been demanded for many years in our country
by the professionals.
It is a fact that great progress has been done on this issue. Some government contracts include the
profession of interior architecture.
Interior Architecture Profession Audit, defined by Chamber of Interior Architecture, “which includes
keeping the work and application records of interior architects, their registers and the inspections
reports with the intent of look out for public interest, prevent the unfair competition, protect the
ethics of profession and the rights of the author by examining the standards and principles currently
in force by the Chamber” and have been accepted by some municipalities in Turkey.

Aim(s) of the Course
To furnish students with advanced skills of designing interiors through a comprehensive culture anddesign research. Students will develop key research skills and gain an in depth understanding of interiordesign process. The course covers essential aspects of interior design includingenvironmental/social/technological issues, brief, survey, research, conceptual development, initial ideasand design stages. The main focus is the development of the entire design research with adequateproposals, project management skills, and knowledge of community, comfort, health and safety issues.
Learning Outcomes of the Course
After completing INAR 501 students will be able to
1. Develop an understanding of the design processes in relation to analytical and critical thinking, andhow they are applied to interior design and architecture;
2. Analyse the technological, cultural and economic factors affecting interior designs in particularenvironment
3. Prepare a substantial research document4. Discuss design as an autonomous discipline with the economic, political and philosophical
influences on its development as well as its theory and practice;5. Demonstrate problem-solving and decision-making skills in relations to a given design project6. Propose alternative, creative and/or contradictive design solutions with proper survey, research,
conceptual ideas and final presentations.
Course Content
The course focuses on the research, creation and detailing stages of the design process with regards to thetransformation/regeneration/redesign of a distinctive building in Izmir. The building situated in ahistorical area, will be evaluated in cultural and urban context. The course contents a comprehensiveresearch on the subject reflecting current issues concerning the city as well as contemporary design ideas.A special emphasis is made on present interior design approaches. Creative, alternative and/orcontradictive design proposals are welcome. The course follows the design process incorporating datacollection, analysis, synthesis, concept development and presentation of design projects.
