Marketing education at the University of Oulu
The University of Oulu was founded in 1958. The University of Oulu is the second
largest multidisciplinary university in Finland today comprising six faculties: the
Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (Oulu Business School), the
Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Medicine, the
Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Technology. The University has nearly 2000
researchers and teachers in total and over 16000 students. Approximately 2000
new students commence their studies each year at the University of Oulu.
International links and co-operation with local industries and businesses form an
essential and integral part of the university’s teaching and research activities.
Oulu Business School is an international research and educational institute for
economic sciences with 1200 students and 100 staff members. The School offers
training in six different majors, three international Master’s Degree programmes
(FE, FMA and IB) and a full-time MBA programme. In 2009, some 138 students
graduated with a Master’s degree. Oulu Business School is organized into six
departments: Accounting, Economics, Finance, International Business,
Management and Marketing.
The Department of Marketing trains marketing professionals for international
and domestic businesses. Typical careers for our Marketing graduates include
the management of the marketing activities of various enterprises, product
marketing, product management and relationship management. The training we
provide is founded on world-class research into industrial business relationships,
logistics activities and the ever intensifying digitalization of businesses.
Since the first marketing students were admitted in 1991, the Department of
Marketing has grown rapidly. Close co-operation with local business life in
Northern Finland supports the practical relevance of the training. The
Department’s active participation in the global academic network opens up
opportunities for our students to gain international experience. For example, the
continued cooperation with the University of North Carolina offers students the
chance to visit North Carolina and work for an international double degree, while
Erasmus scholarships allow students of the Department of Marketing to visit
European universities as exchange students.

Review of the year 2010
Marketing and logistics join forces in 2010
The most important organizational change followed a reorganization of the
teaching programmes at Oulu Business School, whereby the teaching and
research staff in logistics joined the Marketing Department at the beginning of
2010. This change was motivated by closely related research interests and
adjoining, yet complementary, courses offered between the two disciplines. It is,
in fact, quite common that marketing and logistics are positioned together in
business schools, due to their common scientific background as well as
contemporary business philosophies and practices that intertwine the two
disciplines.
Ongoing research in the logistics unit has in recent years mostly focused on
services and outsourcing. The ModSeC project, exploring modularity in service
development, involved a joint effort with marketing researchers from Oulu
Business School as well as a number of well-known domestic and international
partners. The project was successfully concluded in 2010 with an impressive
record of academic publications resulting from research and business
collaboration during the two-year project. In addition, within this project, Jouni
Juntunen completed his doctoral thesis on logistics outsourcing and received
the annual recognition of the Finnish Logistics Association for researchers..
Teaching in logistics covers business logistics and supply chain management, and
also includes numerical analysis with basic tools in optimization and simulation.
The courses complement the existing provision in marketing and offer students
analytical competencies which are highly valued in business-to-business
marketing environments. Excellent opportunities exist for the joint development

of marketing and logistics courses at graduate level as well as in post-graduate
education.
Teaching
2010 was once again another year of various developmental activities regarding
teaching. During 2009 the audit process at the university level was driving the
development and documentation activities which promoted greater openness
and transparency of activities. The hard work done in 2009 prepared the
Department for the accreditation process, which was carried out in 2010.
However, although the faculty performed well in the accreditation process, the
goal has not yet been reached and accreditation is still to be attained in the
future.
The Department of Marketing is engaged in continuous development in the area
of teaching, and, since 2006, the developmental activities have been driven by
the Department of Marketing’s Teaching and Learning Development Team
(MOKTR). It is also notable that four departmental lecturers completed their
pedagogical studies in 2010, and so Mari Juntunen, Tuija Mainela, Satu Nätti and
Pauliina Ulkuniemi each received the pedagogical qualification as teachers from
the School of Vocational Teacher Education within Oulu University of Applied
Sciences. Furthermore, three more staff members are currently pursuing their
pedagogical studies. Thus, the pedagogically qualified lecturers safeguard and
ensure the quality of teaching in the department. This is discernible, for example
in our active participation in MOKTR-activities addressing the development of
teaching methods, mentoring and improved teaching quality.
The Department hosted several international visiting lecturers in 2010, who gave
lectures both for bachelor’s and master’s level students or participated in our
research seminars. The international visitors were Prof. (Docent) Wesley J.
Johnston, Georgia State University, Prof. Daniel Eyers, Cardiff Business School,
Prof. David B. Grant,University of Hull, Prof. Virpi Havila, Uppsala University,
Prof. Juliana Hsuan, Copenhagen Business School, Prof. Robert Mason,
University of Nottingham, Prof Ian Wilkinson from the Australian School of
Business, Prof. Elving Wim, University of Amsterdam and Prof. Louise Young,
University of Western Sydney. Lecturers from the Department of Marketing also
visited a number of universities abroad to take part in teaching activities. Saara
Pekkarinen visited the University of Hull, UK, Cardiff University Business School,
University of Oulu – Marketing – Annual Report 2010
6
UK and Lancaster University Management School, UK, and Veikko Seppänen and
Pauliina Ulkuniemi gave lectures in Al Ain University in United Arab Emirates. In
addition to acting as visiting lecturers in various universities, staff members also
gave lectures for example at Oulu Open University and at Oulu University of
Applied Sciences. Furthermore, during the course of the past year staff members
have given talks, lectures, presentations, and key note speeches in many
different forums.
In 2010 the Department had about 400 marketing students and almost 30 active
doctoral students. We received as many as 279 primary applications from
students wishing to major in marketing. From these applicants, 50 have been
accepted following rigorous entrance examinations. In the area of teaching and
education the Department was highly productive;as a result 58 students
obtained their Master’s Degrees last year. At the same time, another 7 Master’s
degrees were awarded at the University of Lapland. In addition, 46 Bachelor’s
Degrees were awarded, out of which 39 in Oulu and 7 at the University of
Lapland.
MOKTR
The Teaching and Learning Development Team of the Department of Marketing
(MOKTR) convened 8 times in 2010. It was decided to hold meetings once in
month, because planning the marketing curriculum and preparations for the
accreditation processes carried out during the year were expected to bring new
development projects for MOKTR that would be requiring immediate attention.
In 2010, MOKTR consisted of 4 students and 4 staff representatives (including
University of Oulu – Marketing – Annual Report 2010
7
the head of the department). In addition, an alumni member was invited to work
with MOKTR. We were fortunate to have the marketing manager of our local
newspaper as our alumni member. Consequently, it was possible to quickly
incorporate working life relevance already into the planning phase of our
activities.
As in previous years, a natural part of quality of work assessments at university
level is related to student feedback. The yearly feedback day for the Department
of Marketing was held on Thursday, May 6th. Prior to the feedback day, students
had the opportunity to leave anonymous feedback in drop boxes placed at the
guild room of Finanssi (the association of students of Economics and Business
Administration), and at the Student Affairs Office. 15 students and 10 staff
representatives were present at the Feedback Day event. Despite the low
participation, a lively discussion emerged thanks to the highly motivated
participants. The feedback process is a major focus point that we wish to
continue to improve and develop. Nevertheless, we can say that marketing
students in general seem to be satisfied with their studies and they had taken
notice of our efforts to improve the quality of courses and teaching.
During2010 several Teaching Planning Days were held in the Department of
Marketing. The Teaching Planning Day has been organized for some time now
and it has been considered extremely useful. During these events the courses to
be given in the following autumn term were introduced by the course leaders
(lecturers responsible for the course). As a result, the entire staff becomes aware
of each other’s courses and their content. During the event the participants also
have the opportunity to discuss with other teachers any problems related to the
courses.
In conjunction with the renewal of the marketing curriculum, one of the themes
MOKTR has been working on this year was benchmarking other business schools
regarding their courses in mathematics. Students have for many years given
feedback and complaints about what they regard as too heavy a workload in
mathematics. Hence, a minor “marketing research” was conducted to
understand better how this issue is handled in other business schools. The result
showed that in other schools the emphasis is on statistical methods and
economic maths. Finally, MOKTR made a proposal to the Department that some
curriculum changes should be introduced in teaching maths in the future.
Over the past few years, the Department of Marketing has been continuing its
developmental activities related to the personal study plan (HOPS) that focuses
University of Oulu – Marketing – Annual Report 2010
8
on strengthening the basis for personal curriculum work among our students.
Regarding this, workshops and Marketing Mix networking events were organized
for new students during the fall. The workshops were successful, and the more
informal and relaxed Marketing Mix networking event was organized according
to tradition in popularOulu restaurant 45 Special.
MOKTR was also active also at the university level. There were a number of
events, in which members of MOKTR (both faculty members as well as students)
participated. In April, MOKTR was presenting their activities in OpinTori
(University of Oulu). In August MOKTR visited on PedaForum-days (University of
Lapland). Two presentations were given; “Projektinhallintataidot piilo-
opetuksena” and “Työelämärelevanssi luonnolliseksi osaksi opintoja”. This
proved to be a very positive experience for all concerned as lots of information
was gathered and the participants were very active.
Finally, it should be mentioned that this year was particularly interesting in the
sense that MOKTR needed to clearly identify itself in relation to the other
activities of the faculty. In the future there should also be clear understanding of
how the activities of MOKTR should be related to the activities of the Teaching
and Learning Development Team of the faculty.
Research
2010 was a productive year in terms
of research within the Department
of Marketing. Four doctoral
dissertations, eight journal articles,
numerous conference papers and
presentations as well as four
successful research projects testify
to the productive research work of our staff. Research projects involving
international cooperation, several research visits and the numerous visiting
scholars the Department was hosting similarly prove that the Department had an
active year in international co-operation in the area of research.
The most remarkable achievement for the Department was that five doctoral
candidates successfully defended their doctoral dissertations, and therefore the
Department was delighted to celebrate five new Doctors of Science; Dr. Hanna

Komulainen, Dr. Jouni Juntunen, Dr. Marita Wahlroos, Dr. Annu Ristola and Dr.
Jaakko Sinisalo. The “Logistic research of the year” award, which was awarded to
Dr. Jouni Juntunen for his doctoral thesis “Logistics outsourcing for economies in
business networks” marked an outstanding accomplishment in 2010.
Jouni Juntunen, Mikko Melasniemi and Harri Kallberg
In terms of publications, in total 8 international scientific journal articles were
published last year, along with 24 articles in conference proceedings, 2 book
chapters, and 1 book. The staff of the Department also worked as reviewers for
different international journals and conferences as well as acting as editors or
members of the editorial boards of various scientific journals. Four of the
professors also acted as pre-examiners for doctoral theses in other universities
and one expert’s review of an application for a university post was given.
The working group of the Department for research development has been
working towards establishing research seminar practices at the Department.
During 2010, in total 18 different studies were presented in the research
seminars, including those of visiting scholars. Four research projects based on
external funding were carried out in 2010: CoBra, DECCMAC, ModSeC and
ProForm. Most of them were conducted in cooperation with other Finnish
Universities and companies. From among these projects CoBra, DECCMAC and
ModSeC were successfully concluded in 2010. For further information on current
research projects, please look at the following descriptions:

External activities and Societal and Economic impact
In addition to academic work, teaching and research, the staff of the Department
of Marketing was active in contributing to the Department’s influence on society
beyond the University in multiple ways, for example by teaching outside the
Department in the Open University and at Oulu University of Applied Sciences, as
well as in the Faculty’s domestic and international MBA-programmes. In addition
to giving lectures for students, the staff was active in giving speeches, lectures
and training to different kinds of organizations in the Oulu area and on the
national level, as well. Furthermore, members of the staff have given specialist
interviews in their own research areas, as well as written newspaper articles
regarding various topical themes.
The department also publishes a monthly letter for stakeholders to inform them
about the activities of the Department. All in all, the staff of the Department has
been actively involved in many types of confidential activities, organizational
memberships as well as providing specialist knowledge for external actors and
society as a whole.
