Thanks to all of you for making it such a success.

We look forward to making this an annual event.

We interviewed twenty-three applicants for four fellowship positions this fall. Once again, we would like to say thank you to all of you who helped us in the interview process. It is time-consuming work, but it is vitally important work too. And on that note, we are delighted to introduce you to our incoming class for next year, as announced on Match Day, December 5, 2012. They will begin as first-year Hem/Onc Fellows on July 1, 2013.

Friday Afternoon Happy Hour will resume this Spring. This event is held at 4:30 p.m. in the Wallace Tumor Institute in the 5th floor common area. This is an informal gathering for those you want to simply unwind after a long week. There will be music, conversation, light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.

If you have something you would like to include in the next edition of The Hem/Onc Herald, please send it by e-mail to [email protected] or [email protected].

The Division of Hematology/Oncology bids farewell to friends/colleagues, Latacian Jones and Seng-jaw Soong, Ph.D.

Latacian Jones passed on November 25, 2012. She was an Administrative Associate and valued employee in the UAB Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapy Program since 2004. Her contributions to the program were invaluable. In addition, she always had a kind word for every-one and her smile was contagious. Latacian will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Seng-jaw Soong, PhD, former Senior Leader of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Director of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Unit, passed away suddenly on December 28, 2012.

Dr. Soong was a Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology from 1998 to 2008. He led a distinguished career as a biostatistician for 40 years. He established and led the UAB CCC Biosta-tistics and Bioinformatics Unit from 1976 to 2008. During that time he collaborated in publishing over 330 peer-reviewed medical publications. Dr. Soong was internationally known for his re-search work on melanoma, and was a co-editor and co-author of all five editions of the well-recognized textbook Cutaneous Melanoma. In 1999, Dr. Soong was named the first recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award in the Cancer Center for his contributions to cancer research and to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. He served in a variety of distinguished leadership positions on a local level at UAB and on a national level.

Dr. Soong retired from the Cancer Center in 2008 as Professor Emeritus and Director Emeritus of the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Unit and Associate Director Emeritus of the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Rethinking Customer Service The Division of Hematology/Oncology has embraced the AMC21 initiatives endorsed by the UAB Health System and the UAB Department of Medicine. We are striving to create an environment where our patients have an exceptional service experience. Most of our faculty, nurses, and administrative staff have participated in the *AIDET training sessions.

Recently, Larry Thomas, Director of Administration and Nicole Temple, Business Officer I, arranged for the UAB Organizational Learning and Development Office to provide a personalized customer service training class for our administrative staff. This session was titled the Cores of Customer Service and was facilitated by Matt Copeland , Training Specialist with UAB Organizational and Learning Development. Some of the topics discuss were: 1) Who Are Our Customers? (patients, co-workers, vendors); 2) Managing Customer Perceptions; 3) Power through Personal Influence; and 4) Suggestions for Dealing with Difficult People/Customers.
