DEPARTMENT PROFILE
INTRODUCTION
The Undergraduate Program in the Department of Oral Pathology was established in the year
1986 & the Postgraduate course started from the year 1998 under MGR University.From the year
2001 the Department is functioning under the VINAYAKA MISSION RESEARCH FOUNDATION.
The department of Oral Pathology provides a Centre for teaching, deals with patient care and
is concerned with the diagnosis of a wide range of abnormalities in the oral and maxillofacial region.
Academics
The department deals with the first three years of undergraduate students by imparting the
basics of developmental, histological and clinic pathological & histopathological aspects of the oral
and para-oral structures.All faculty in the department have undergone Faculty development program.
At the postgraduate level a three year program is offered to the students which make the candidate
proficient in routine cytological and histopathological procedures.

the department museum.

FIELD OF RESEARCH:
The research interest of our department covers a broad range of research activities in the field of
physiological, anatomical and pathological aspects of oral tissues.Oral cancer is one of the common
cancers in this locality. More number of benign tumors also reporting to our institution every year.
Our department conducts basic researches and investigations on histopathology, cytology and
hematology. Our department is committed to provide promising quality, efficiency, secure storage,
vital support, exemplary and individualized care making ground breaking discoveries and educating
generations of exceptional pathologists with rapid delivery of diagnostic test results. Our objective is
to advance the field as well as support other avenues of investigation with the potential to improve
the practice of histopathology, cytology and hematology. Our broad areas of research are: 1. Oral
Precancerous Lesions, 2.Oral Cancer, 3.Fluorosis, 4.Dental Caries, 5.Odontogenic Cyst and Tumors,
6.Forensic Dentistry.
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING:
Problem based learning is a teaching and learning method in which students learn through facilitated
problem solving. Our staff contributes to PBL in the college as coordinator, committee member,
facilitator and observer.

place in Basic science Exam.
