Preface
Physical Education
The Department of Physical Education and Yoga has dedicated itself in the growth of
the nation through moulding the young citizens of India by means of building a strong
mind and best physique through Physical activities. Physical Education, a learning
experience, offers a unique opportunity for problem-solving and self-expression &
socialization. A well implemented, comprehensive programme is an essential
component to the growth of both mind and body. The Department has started its
regular sports activities of conducting Inter-Collegiate Tournaments, Inter-University
Tournaments from 1982 and Academic Programmes in Physical Education since
1992.The Department of Physical Education is well equipped with modern
infrastructure facilities, including facilities for all games and sports.
Yoga
The UGC has identified Nine Universities to launch a scheme for "Promotion of Yoga
Education and Practice in Universities" during the year 1993. In southern part of India,
Bharathidasan University has got that credit to execute the scheme fruitfully. UGC has
sanctioned Rs.25 lakhs for Construction of Yoga Centre and two staff quarters. Thus,
the Yoga Centre was established in October 1994. Two Yoga instructors were deputed
by UGC for five years and later academic programmes were introducted. It had also
received Rs.10 lakhs from UGC for its‟ up-gradation of Yoga centre.

Education and allied areas.
National Recognitions
National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is a statutory body of Indian government set up to formally oversee standards, procedures and progress of ‘teacher education’ in the Indian education system. The Department of Physical Education and Yoga, Bharathidasan University got NCTE approval to run one year B.P.Ed. Programme from the academic session 2014-15 onwards, subsequently it has also gave recognisation for running two year B.P.Ed. Programme from the academic session 2015-16 onwards,

Activities I. Teaching
The Department of Physical Education and Yoga is offering two year B.P.Ed. Physical
Education teacher training programme which has been recognized by NCTE, as well as
research programmes such as M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Physical Education. B.P.Ed. is basically a
professional programme meant for preparing Physical Education Teachers for schools, which
involves theory, practical and school internship as part of the curriculum. The Department
has professional teachers who will give lectures with modern teaching aids and practical
experience to the students.
II. Training and Coaching
Annual Leadership training camp is annually organised for B.P.Ed. trainees. The coaching
camp of „Bharathidasan University teams‟ as well as „University Departments teams‟ of
various sports disciplines were organised every year just before Inter-University
Competitions and Inter-Collegiate Competitions respectively. The summer coaching camp in
selected sports disciplines were organized at the University campus during vacation
periodically.
Almost all of our students / scholars are well placed in the Government, Government-aided
and private institutions. The students those who pursued Post Graduate Diploma in Fitness
Management and Yoga have got placements in various reputed organisations throughout the
country. The placement training is also periodically conducted by the Department.
III. Research
The Department offers research programmes such as M.Phil. and Ph.D. The scholars of the
Department have got fellowships in various schemes such as UGC-JRF, ICSSR, RGNF and
URF. The Department has executed several projects over the years. It also conducts Seminars
/ Conferences / Workshops periodically both National as well as International level. The
focused areas of research of the Department are Sports training, Sports Psychology, Test &
Measurement, Exercise Physiology and Yoga. Large number of Publications / Books / Edited
Volumes of the department has led to the conferment of many awards.
IV. Tournament Participation and Organisation
The Department of Physical Education is actively involved in participation and organisation
of tournament both at Inter-Collegiate as well as Inter-University level. Our University teams
are participating in 42 disciplines (Men – 23; Women – 19) in the Zonal and All India Level
Inter University competitions every year and in many events the teams have made a mark.
To identify the talent and to promote sports among students of Bharathidasan University and
its affiliated & constituent colleges, the Department of Physical Education conducts Inter-
Collegiate Tournaments in various sports disciplines. The Department has also organised
several Inter-University tournaments in various sports disciplines.

Facilities
FITNESS CENTRE WITH SPORTS SCIENCES LAB Fitness Centre with Sports Sciences Lab block have fitness centre with state of the art, technology with high tech & latest exercises equipment. The building also have specialized Sports Sciences laboratories. The objectives of the setting-up of Sports Sciences laboratories is to provide a venue for assessing, monitoring, advising and optimizing performance from both a sports and healthy life style perspective with specific equipment & staff. The proposed Sports Sciences laboratories will provide scientific support to sports person. The building houses Fitness Centre & Sports training laboratory, Sports Medicine laboratory, Department Library, HOD Office and Department Office in the ground floor. The following facilities namely Staff room, Sports Psychology laboratory, Human Performance laboratory, Educational Technology laboratory and Anatomy, Physiology & Health Education Lab are available in the first floor. Yoga cum Seminar Hall is located in the second floor along with staff room. The laboratories are equipped up to date with all kinds of testing equipments and technology supporting to the sports and games.

Fitness Centre
The University has a separate fitness centre in the main campus. Fitness Centre has a wide range of
Fitness machine, and most of them were motorized. Fitness Centre is functioning on all days except
Sunday and holidays. The working hours are 6.00 a.m. to 8.00 a.m. in the morning session and 4.00
p.m. to 6.00 p.m. in the evening session. A Gym assistant is looking after the Fitness Centre. The list

INTER-UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENTS PARTICIPATION
Our University teams are participating in 42 sport disciplines in the inter-
University tournament annually conducted at various levels. Totally around 410
students (Men – 240, Women - 170) represents our university in the Inter-University
tournament each year and around 115 Directors of Physical Education from the
affiliated colleges are directly involved in the various capacities as Selectors, Coaches,
Managers in the Inter-University tournaments. Inter – University tournaments
participated by our university annually is listed here under.

Bharathidasan University is honoring the outstanding sports personnels, those
who brought laurels to the University in the All India Inter-University tournaments by
cash award since 2000-2001. In year 2009-2010 onwards, the Prize money was also
introduced for outstanding sports personnels, those who brought laurels to the
University in the South-West Zone and South Zone Inter-University tournaments.

Bharathidasan University Handball (Women) secured third position in the South Zone Inter–
University Handball (Women) tournament organised by Bharathidasan University and hosted
at Meenaakshi Ramasamy Arts & Science College, Thathanur from 09.11.2013 to
12.11.2013.
Bharathidasan University Handball (Men) won the South Zone Inter–University Handball
(Men) tournament organised by Bharathidasan University and hosted at J.J. College of Arts
and Science, Pudukkottai, from 20th
to 24th
November 2013.
Bharathidasan University Hockey (Men) team bagged second position in the South Zone
Inter-University Hockey (Men) tournament held at Sri Krishnadevaraya University,
Ananthapur from 9th

December 2013.
Mr.S.Thinakar Anand of our University bagged silver medal in foil individual event in the All
India Inter-University Fencing (Men) Championship, organised by Punjabi University,
Patiala from 2nd

Ms.P.Anuradha (75 kg category) won the gold in the All India Inter-University Weight lifting
(Women) Championship organised by Anna University and hosted at Hindusthan College of
Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore from 1st to 3

Mr.P.Manoj Prabhakar (+105 kg category) bagged the bronze in the All India Inter-
University Weight lifting (Men) championship, organised by Anna University and hosted at
Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore from 4th
to 7th
March 2014.
Mr.K.Vasanth, (74 kg category) won the bronze in the All India Inter-University Power
lifting (Men) championship, organised by Anna University and hosted at Hindusthan College
