Brief History of Hospital

Shaheed Suhrawardy hospital (Former Ayub Central Hospital) was planned to be established at Dhaka by the erstwhile central government of Pakistan as the only full fledged general hospital with all modern medical facilities in the then East Pakistan.

In July 1963, the scheme was proposed for 200 bedded general hospital and was approved by the then National Economic Council.

A two storied out patients department (OPD) was constructed over about 19 acres of land in 1960 where outdoor facilities for pathology and Radiology were functioning till 1975.

Brief History of Hospital

After liberation the hospital was renamed as Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital.

The Government of Bangladesh sanctioned 75 indoor beds which were functioning till 1978.

In 1983, a project profile was submitted for a 500 bedded hospital to be completed within 3 years.

But considering the fund constrains the proposed Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital was established with facilities for 300 beds in the first phase to be further expanded in subsequent phases.

Post-graduate Training

The honorary doctors play the key role in management of the admitted patients. Beds are distributed among the doctors and they give regular follow-ups and take the responsibility of the management of the respective patients. They are also concerned about all the admitted patients in the unit.

They attend the routine and emergency operations. Here the honorary doctors get ample scope to perform surgeries and thus have good hands-on-training under proper supervision.

It is a well equipped and very spacious. Left wing of the theatre belongs to the Department of Surgery which is also shared by the orthopaedics department.

In this wing there are 3 operating rooms. In 2 of them facilities for major operations under general anaesthesia are present. The third OT is usually reserved for minor day cases under local anaeshesia.

Well-equipped OT Room-1

Page 21: Department of Surgery, SSH and BKZMC

Hence two major operations are performed simultaneously along with some minor cases. Therefore the number of operations performed daily by a unit is far greater than in other hospitals in Dhaka. For this reason the trainees here get good opportunity to develop surgical skills.

Operation Theatre

Page 22: Department of Surgery, SSH and BKZMC

In the theatre the anaeshesia machines are very modern. The instruments here are of very high quality and well maintained. Laparoscopic surgeries are routinely performed. All the latest surgical appliances are used in the theatre including high frequency diathermy machine, halogen light and harmonic scalpel.

The college library is a very spacious one accommodating about 100 readers at a time. It is open on the weekdays from 8:00am to 8:00pm that is 12 hours a day.

The library is very rich with books and journals and it is also well staffed. Annual budget for 2007-2008 is 16, 57,645 taka.

Arrangements are being made for developing online linkage.College Library and reading

The hospital library was inaugurated in 2001. The library is quite spacious. It is well lit and well ventilated. At a time 40 readers can sit there. The library is open from 8 am to 8 pm on all working days. There are about 200 books in the library.

Until 2005 a yearly budget of 75,000 taka was allotted for procurement of books for the library. Hence the latest and expensive books were purchased during that period. But since the establishment of the college library in 2006 the budget has been transferred to the college library fund.

At present the hospital library is mainly used as a reading room.
