I would like to extend a warm greetings to everyone on the beginning of Spring trimester and the publication of our first EEE newsletter dubbed E3 (E-cubed) shortcut for EEE. E3 will give you an overview of the EEE department’s activities, focusing on education and research. From its inception in 2004, the EEE department has crossed great distances and has demonstrated impressive growth over the years. Home to more than 1200 students, the department focuses on innovative technology and the much needed skill set in order to prepare the students for a prosperous career in the backdrop of emerging opportunities in the technology frontier. I believe that E3 will bring to you the lively activities and updated information that reflect our quest for excellence.

E3 will be published every trimester and highlight research groups or faculty members or student projects in each of its issue. The first issue of E3 highlights Center for Energy Research (CER) established by the EEE dept to focus on research in renewable energy and establish it as a pioneer in this field in our country. As you go through the feature article and the list of projects both ongoing and completed in the coming pages, you will notice that CER has indeed demonstrated a very lively growth. Supervised by a group of faculty members renowned in this field, the CER continues to grow and hopefully will become a center for excellence nationwide in renewable energy.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all who helped in bringing out the 1st issue of E3 newsletter. Special thanks go to Orchi Hassan, our former faculty member for designing the overall layout and also to Md. Sadiqur Rahman Dipu for helping in the graphics design part. FEATURE ARTICLE : Center for Energy Research (CER)

Adverse effects and risks of conventional fossil fuel or nuclear energy are getting more prominent day by day that makes the renewable energy a very important sector of research and development. Although still expensive, people and the governments all over the world are gradually realizing the importance of renewable energy as a safeguard against an environmental catastrophe for our future generation. It is interesting to observe that renewable energy is getting due importance in a developing country like Bangladesh and penetration of Solar PV and biogas/biomass in recent years is quite appreciable. Considering the cost of renewable energy, it is not still considered as a viable alternative for bulk power generation, but with the soaring price of the fossil fuels in the world market and decreasing price of the solar PV and other renewable energy gadgets, it is quite near in future that renewable energy will become a major contributor in the energy sector of Bangladesh. So, it is very important for the researchers in Bangladesh to prepare for the future and get involved in research and development of the renewable energy technology.

With the mission in view, The Centre for Energy Research (CER) was established in September, 2010 at the United International University. The aim of the CER is to enhance research in the fields of renewable and sustainable energy, its utilization and efficient management, and policy formulation through research and development. A state of art research laboratory is being developed under CER to carry out test and research in the field of renewable energy. CER is involved in different renewable energy related activities like training, designing low cost high efficiency circuits for LED lamps, micro-controller based charge controller with maximum power point tracking, enhancing the performance of solar PV systems, designing of diffused reflectors for solar PV panels for enhanced power output, DC micro grid and smart systems etc. Recently CER was awarded the contract for 2011 Technical Auditing of the SHSs (Solar Home Systems) installed all over Bangladesh under IDCOL's (Infrastructure Development Company Limited) Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Development Project (REREDP) project, which is the largest SHS project in the world. As far as the energy sector is concerned, renewable energy in particular, UIU has significant expertise and experience. UIU is the pioneer in introducing a course on renewable energy at the undergraduate level in EEE department and plans to open up specialized courses in the near future. Recently CER has been accepted as the testing authority to certify equipments for IDCOL's Solar Home System program.

Climate change is one of the great challenges of the 21st century. Its most severe impacts may still be avoided if efforts are made to transform current energy systems. Renewable Energy (RE) sources have a large potential to displace emissions of green house gases from the combustion of fossil fuels and thereby to mitigate climate change. If implemented properly, renewable energy sources can contribute to social and economic development, to energy access, to a secure and sustainable energy supply, and to a reduction of negative impacts of energy provision on the environment and human health.

UIU has been awarded EPSRC (UK) researchfund of about half a million USD forestablishment of ‘Solar PV Nano-grid’

UIU has been awarded Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (UK) fund of approx. USD 500,000 for ‘Solar Nano-Grids as an appropriate sustainable solution to the limitations of Solar home systems in rural communities in Kenya and Bangladesh’ along with its partners of Loughborough University, University of Oxford and INTASAVE, Kenya. UIU will be the lead scientific partner and shall be involved in the design and implementation of Solar Nano-grids in Kenya and Bangladesh.
