DEPUTY PRINCIPALS REPORT Year 7 Camp In what felt like a flashback to last week, Purchase Road was again choking with cars on Wednesday morning, as parents of our 320 new Year 7 students dropped their children off for camp. Many students struggled as they dragged the enormous suitcases, some far larger than the students themselves, into the school grounds. In what can be a nervous time for parents and students alike, the reassuring smiles from the 40 Peer Support Leaders and eighteen staff, hopefully set minds at ease as the group prepared to depart for Narrabeen Sport and Rec for the three-day camp. After roll call was completed, buses were quickly loaded and the group of close to 400 left without any fuss. Activities at camp promote teamwork, develop friendships and challenge the participants to try new challenges. It also provid es a fantastic opportunity for staff and Peer Support Leaders to get to know our Year 7 students in a less formal setting. Pleasin gly, all the students exhibited exemplary behaviour over the three days. Finally, a note of thanks is extended to the organisers Ms Howard, Mr Hind, Ms Campbell and Mrs Mallison for their organisati on of the event and also to the staff who gave up their time to assist, leaving family members, regular commitments and classes beh ind. Year 6 into 7 Evening A reminder, the CTHS Year 6 into 7 Information Night for students in the local area, will run from 6pm-8pm on Tuesday 3 March. The CTHS Principal, Mr Johnson, will highlight the enormous range of opportunities available at CTHS. Current students from Year 7 will recount their experiences and other key staff shall impart valuable information to prospective new families. After the formal ities, there will also be a tour of the campus, where visitors will get the chance to hear from KLA (Key Learning Area) representatives ab out the learning possibilities offered at this leading comprehensive high school. A night not to be missed if you are intending to en rol your child at CTHS in Year 7 for 2021! Career MentorsBreakfasts The first of our Career MentorsBreakfasts for 2020 begins next Friday 28 February. The mentoring breakfasts provide the opportunity for students in Year 11 to spend valuable time with someone whose career path is one they have identified as bein g of interest. The program provides students with some real insight into what a chosen career is like and many students begin to d evelop networks in professions of interest. Year 12 Parent/Teacher Interviews Tuesday 25 February will be the first of our Parent/Teacher Interviews for 2020, with Year 12 parents able to make a booking to meet with their child's teachers from 4pm-7pm in the MPC. It is an invaluable opportunity to discuss their progress in this critical final year of study. Year 12 students are also encouraged to attend to learn some strategies they need to implement on their HSC journey. Bookings for the night should be made using the Parent Portal. The booking window opened on Saturday 15 February at 9am and will close on Sunday 23 February at 5pm. Please note, if you have not received an invitation to book interviews, please check the Junk folder in your emails, particularly if you have a Hotmail account. If you still are having difficulty, please contact the school via [email protected]. School Uniform The School Uniform Code is particular regarding the types of clothing permitted at school. The wearing of tights/leggings, gym shorts, branded tracksuit pants and shorts are not appropriate nor are they part of our school uniform. The School Uniform Code also specifies the types of acceptable jackets and jumpers for school wear, which does NOT include jackets or jumpers with hoods! The wearing of a 'hoodie' or activewear, as explained above, is likely to result in time spent in detention. If students need to wear an item of non-school uniform, they must bring a valid, signed note from their parent/carer. Road Safety Over the Christmas period, there were alterations made to bus stops in Cherrybrook, notably a change to the stop opposite the school. Unfortunately, this seems to have added more congestion during peak periods and created something of a bottleneck opposite the school. More concerning is the lack of care taken by students crossing Purchase Road, with several near misses reported by drivers of vehicles. We would like to encourage all parents to have a conversation with their children about safely crossing the road. Mr Townsend Year 8 Drama Incursion On Monday, Year 8 students, along with Stage 5 and 6 Drama students were treated to a Drama performance entitled Commedia dell'Arte, performed by the Matriark Theatre. This deftly delivered piece of entertainment provided our students with the chance to deepen their appreciation of the value of spontaneity and effective teamwork. Thank you to Ms Cannon and the CAPA faculty for their organisation of this event. OnSTAGE With so many incredibly innovative and thought-provoking group and Individual performances and projects on show at this year’s OnSTAGE, our Year 12 Drama students engaged deeply in stimulating and enlivened debate and discussion following our trip to the Seymour Centre last Thursday 13 February. Richly creative work is what stands to spring from such experiences. Our Year 12 HSC Drama Performance Night on Tuesday 18 August will hopefully boast a suite of grippingly memorable works, but for now, it is a case of rolling up those sleeves and getting stuck into business of invigorated collaboration.

We are looking forward to our 2020 cohort setting the stage ablaze with their compelling creations. So good luck to Bailey Brown, Nathan Jenkins, Isaak Koorey, Holly McRobb, Ben Murzsa, Stephanie Neil, Annalise Pringle, Aparna Sivakumaran, Jason Teng, Ailish van Noppen and Hannah Wotton.

All are pictured in the accompanying photo with the exception of Holly McRobb and Ben Murzsa, who were unavailable to attend this excursion.

Andrew has been swimming since he was five years old and, since then, has achieved high levels of success both in and out of school. Andrew, who specialises in Medley and Backstroke, represented his club, Castle Hill RSL Dolphins, at a State level placing him in the top ten for his age division in four events. He has also recently competed at the Junior Metro North West Senior Time Trials allowing him to compete at Nationals in the 200m Backstroke. PROCEDURES FOR SICK STUDENTS Students who are sick during class should see a teacher for written permission to go to sick bay. They must present themselves promptly to the front office and politely follow instructions from the office staff, who will then contact a parent/guardian when necessary. Sick bay is used for a short time only. Students should not call their parents in the first instance. Please be advised the school does not supply any medication, including pain killers, medicated creams, eye drops etc.

PROCEDURE FOR EARLY LEAVERS If a student needs to leave school early, they must provide a note from their parent/guardian giving reasons for their partial absence. The student must hand the note in at the student window before 8.30am where they will be issued with a leave pass. They can then present this pass to their teacher and leave school at the appropriate time. On Thursdays (sport days) all students in Years 9-11 MUST have their early leave notes signed by a member of the PE staff before presenting to the office.
