As part of our ongoing technology implementation, there will be a Parent ICT Workshop on 20 June from 9-10 am in the Computer Lab in the library. As well as the opportunity to see and interact with our lab, you will be taken through the school’s scope and sequence and provided with a copy of the ICT Grade Overview. All interested parents/carers are welcome to attend. The school is endeavouring to constantly improve our school communication including our recent SMS messaging service. Reasons for your child’s absence can be provided to the school by replying to the SMS notification, school email, phone, letter or directly to the class teacher. Absence notification by school phone is immediately updated in school records. The school email is opened a number of times during the day as part of ongoing office routine. An SMS is automatically generated at 10 am if a reason has not been recorded for the day’s absence by this time. Therefore you may have emailed for example but the email may have been sent between the times it is opened during the day. Over recent weeks, absences due to sickness have increased. The school appreciates your support by keeping your children at home when they are not well and contagious to others. The school has also been diligent with cleanliness and reminding children to wash their hands to reduce the spreading of germs. Thank you to the many parents who have let us know of the reasons for your child’s illness. Absences due to the cool and wet weather are not justified for keeping children at home and not attending school. We make sure that the children are warm and dry in the poorer conditions during the winter and have continued to provide learning experiences and assessment during the poorer weather this week. May the long weekend be a great opportunity for getting together as a family and enjoying an additional day of rest and recuperation ready for the following four day week. Principal – Mrs Toni Skinner WEEK 6 7 June 2019

Deputy Principal’s Report

Our House Captains were provided with a great opportunity this week, attending a Leadership Conference. I am sure some of the skills and learning experiences that they were provided with will be put into good use in the future.

It was disappointing that the poor weather on Tuesday meant that the Netball Gala Day had to be cancelled because of safety reasons. This event will be rescheduled later in the year. We will let you know of the new arrangements when this new organisation is communicated to the school.

On Monday, students received a note and order form from the P&C for a Pie Drive through Thompson’s Pies. If you would like to order any of the delicious items, your money and order form needs to be in by Friday June 21 with deliveries at the school to be on Tuesday July 2.

PSSA Soccer Last week Flynn R represented Kariong and Sydney North at the 2019 NSWPSSA Primary Football Championship in Bathurst. For Flynn to make the Sydney North team was a huge achievement. He had to compete for selection with players from over 170 schools in our region.

In Bathurst, 14 regional teams from across NSW battled it out in very cold and testing conditions. The Sydney North team managed to go through the tournament undefeated, eventually defeating Combined Independent Schools 1 – 0 in a closely contested final. Over 3 days and 6 games, Flynn’s team scored 16 goals and only allowed 1 goal to be scored against them, a very impressive result. More good news was to follow with Flynn gaining selection in the NSW invitational team. This team will travel to the ACT later this year to compete against the other states in the School Sports Australia Championships.

Well done Flynn!!

Zone Cross Country On Friday 31 May, 48 Kariong Public School students

travelled to Central Mangrove to participate in the Brisbane

Water Cross Country Carnival. The grounds were baked in

glorious sunshine and despite a slight smoky haze, running

conditions were close to perfect. The course itself weaved

through a mixture of old trees, playing fields and school

grounds providing the students with a true experience of

cross country running. A huge thank you to Matthew Walter

and the team for their organisation of a great day.

After an outrageous amount of jumpers had been purchased

and each competitor

had walked the course, it was time for the races to

begin. What followed was a demonstration of the huge

willpower and exceptional running talent that Kariong

has to offer. Each runner gave everything they had

out on the course, pushing themselves further and

faster than they thought possible. A huge

congratulations to all our athletes who represented

the school respectfully and responsibly throughout

the day, and to all the parents and spectators who

made the day possible through their continued

support. A special mention to Blake B (5th), Jasmine

G, Katelyn W, Wilson B (all 2nd) and Kiara G (1st) who

will all go on to represent our zone at Sydney North. We know that you will do an incredible

job and, as always, give your personal best out on the course

Please return race singlets to Mr Bennett as soon as possible. Our Cross Country Awards

Assembly will take place on Thursday 13 June at 9:15am.

It is a sad reality that there are over 116,000 homeless people living in Australia!

Wiseberry Kariong is seeking donations to help our local shelter, Coast Shelter Gosford, cope with the cold winter months.

We are asking our community to donate clean blankets, new socks and jumpers. Non-perishable foods may also be donated.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data In 2019 all Australian Government schools will be implementing the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data

(NCCD), for school students with a disability.

This important data collection will reflect the support that is already being provided to students and will focus on the steps the school is taking to ensure that all students can access education on the same basis. The data will be used to inform future planning by governments and education authorities and will help us to better support the participation of students with disability in our school and all other NSW public schools.

The data collection will focus on the adjustments that are being made by teachers and schools to support individual students to access and participate in education. Schools will collect information already available in the school about:

The level of adjustment being provided to support students with disability to participate in

their schooling like all other students

The number of students who receive each level of adjustment

Where known, the student’s type of disability.

The data collection process will have no direct impact on your child and they will not be involved in any testing process.

Reported data will be made available in such a way that the privacy of all students is maintained.

If you do not want your child to be counted in the data collection, you must complete the attached form and

return it to the school before Thursday, 4 July.

If you have any questions about your child being counted in the data collection please contact the school.

Further information about the data collection can be found at the website:

Kerry Rayner Toni Skinner Assistant Principal Principal

If you do not want your child to be counted in the data collection, please complete the attached form and

return it to the school before Thursday, 4 July.

Please return this section to Mrs Rayner by 4 July 2019 if you do not want your child to participate.

GRIP Leadership Conference

On Monday, 16 sports house captains attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Gosford with Mr Brady. It was an excellent experience for both teachers and students. The conference highlighted specific strategies on how to become an effective leader, how to work as part of a team and how to make a difference in the wider community. After such a motivational day, the captains already have plans in place on how they can make a difference at Kariong Public School. The captains have specifically addressed priority areas within the school and will be working with the SRC to address these areas of concern.
