Three hatsPaper for a displayPrayer ending enlargedLabel - Trinity

Gathering The Lord be with you.And also with you.Open the Worship box and set up the Worship table for the week.

Engaging Ask the children what hobbies/interests they have – take a few examples. Do they have more than one hobby/interest? What busy people they must be to do all those activities! Talk about my own hobbies/interests and show the hat that I wear for that activity. 1. Walking = woolly bobble hat 2. Visiting places in the summer = sun hat 3. “Swallows and Amazons” fan = red bobble hatExplain to the children that I like to do all three activities but I’m still the same person – me- just one person. So I am three people in one. 3 in 1. Write “3 in 1” on the paper and stick up pictures of the hats/or the hats. Talk to the children that God is like this too. He is God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit. 3 in 1. And we call this idea the Trinity. Add the ending to lots of prayers to the paper = In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy SpiritAmenAnd underline the word - Father, son and Holy Spirit. Write 1 over Father, 2 over son and 3 over Holy Spirit and draw a circle around the whole. 3 in 1. Over the next few weeks we will think more about this idea of three in one.

Look at the paper from last week with the hats on and the prayer ending. Ask the children “What can you think about that comes in threes? – prompt if needed with triangle, triplets, finger joint. Everyone look at your finger. It has three parts to it but it makes one finger. Show the waist coat. It has three parts to it but together they make a whole and the waist coat can be worn- put the waist coat on a child. Make a triangle with three pieces of Meccano. How many sides does it have? Have many corners does it have? Add a picture of a finger, a triangle and a waist coat to the paper.Remind children that God is like these things – three in one – God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit. 3 in 1.Say… The Trinity action poemThree parts to a pattern, (hold up three fingers)One waistcoat creates. (hold up one finger, then mime putting on a waistcoat)Three angles and sides, (hold up three fingers)One triangle makes. Gathering The Lord be with you.And also with you.Open the Worship box and set up the Worship table for the week.

Engaging Remind the children about our last two Monday Worships about the hats, triangle, finger and waistcoat and use the word Trinity.Look at the paper from the last 2 weeks with the hats, picture of a finger, a triangle and a waist coat and the prayer ending.Explain to the children that Christians believe that

1. God the Father = created the world2. God the son = Jesus who came to live in the world with us3. God the Holy Spirit = the real invisible friend

Christians believe there is one God but that God is made up of three persons – the Father, the son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. Link to the hats, waist coat etc. Show the children a large triangle. It has three equal sides and three corners. The three corners and three sides remind Christians of God the Father, God the son and God the Holy

Spirit. Now show the back of the triangle with the fold lines on it and F, J and H. Fold each smaller triangle in to the centre- H first then J, then F. Now we just have one Triangle again. There is only one God but he can be experienced in three different ways. Open out the F triangle – God can be experienced as God the Father and Creator – draw a flower, mountain, sun in the triangle – take suggestions from the children what should be drawn. Open out the J triangle – Christians believe that people can know God in Jesus – they believe Jesus showed the world what God was like. When they read the stories about Jesus and how he lived and died they know that God is loving and powerful – draw a star over a simple stable and a cross in the triangle.Open out the H triangle – Christians believe that they can experience God today as the Holy Spirit, a real but invisible friend who is always with us – draw a smiling face in the triangle. 3 in 1 = The Trinity.

Gathering The Lord be with you.And also with you.Open the Worship box and set up the Worship table for the week.

Engaging Remind the children about our last three Monday Worships about the hats, triangle etc and use the word Trinity.Show the children a jug of water.

1. Pour some water into a kettle and ask the children what will happen to the water – steam – watch the steam coming out of the kettle – Where does the steam come from? – it is the water turning into steam.

2. Pour some water into an ice cube tray. What will happen to the water when I put it into the freezer? It will turn to ice – here is some ice.

3. Pour some water into a glass – How is the water different to the ice and the steam? It is a liquid.

Water can be a liquid, steam or ice but it is still water – 3 in 1 again just like God the Father (who created the world), God the son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit (invisible friend). Engaging Remind the children about our Worships about the hats, triangle etc and The Trinity.Look at the triangle picture with the folds. Can the children remember what the three parts of the Trinity are? Today we will think about –God the Father. Look at the triangle and picture we drew of a flower, mountain and sun. These are just some of the things that God created – ask children to name more –include ourselves. Look at the Bible verse – “You are our Father, Lord. We are the clay and you are like the potter.” – this tells us that God made us. Think about the beginning of the Lord’s prayer which starts – “Our Father”. I am going to read you a story about a father and son. Read the Prodigal son.Reflect on the story and stress that the Father welcomed the son home with open arms and this is just like God – Father of all and forgiving. If we do things wrong and say sorry he will always forgive us.

Can the children remember what the three parts of the Trinity are? Today we are going to talk about another of the three parts of the Trinity. Show the crib and the cross. Can anyone guess which of the three parts – God the son- Jesus. At Christmas we remember that Jesus was born in a stable. He was just like us – he needed warmth and food and love etc. People knew that Jesus was very special. They loved to listen to his wonderful stories about God and about how to live. They loved to see him heal people. Jesus was like us but was very special too. I am going to tell you a story about when Jesus healed a very sick girl. Tell the story of Jairus’ daughter. At the end ask the children how the parents felt at the beginning and at the end of the story. Because Jesus was on this earth like us he knew how we felt but as he is the son of God he can listen to our prayers too just like he listened to the little girl’s father.

Knitted nativity scene and cross. Story of The boy in the temple page 66 of The Lion Storyteller Bible by Bob Hartman

Gathering The Lord be with you.And also with you.Open the Worship box and set up the Worship table for the week.

Engaging Remind the children about our Worships about the hats, triangle etc and The Trinity.Look at the triangle picture with the folds. Can the children remember what the three parts of the Trinity are? Today we are going to talk about another of the three parts of the Trinity. Start to unpack the new knitted people Nativity Scene. What story is this telling? – that’s right the story of Jesus’ birth. Show the crib and the cross. We will be thinking about – God the son- Jesus today and particularly thinking about Jesus as a child just like you.At Christmas we remember that Jesus was born in a stable. He was just like us – he needed warmth and food and love etc. Think about a young child you know. What sort of things do they have to learn e.g. crawl, walk, talk, eat for themselves, play. So do you think Jesus had to learn these things too? Yes, he was just like us. As he got older what sort of things do you think happened to Jesus- take ideas e.g. learnt to play with other children, learnt to share, learned to run, read etc. Do you think Jesus was happy all the time? Take ideas. Look at the emotion faces and decide if Jesus experienced these emotions when he was a child. Jesus was like us but he was very special too. I remember a time when I was little when I got lost and I was very upset and sad and worried. I wonder if this ever happened to you or to Jesus. I am going to tell you a story about when Jesus got lost. Tell the story of The boy in the Temple. At the end ask the children how the parents felt at the beginning and at the end of the story. Because Jesus was on this earth like us he knew how we felt but as he is the son of God he can listen to our prayers too.

Mobile phone and another one to send a messagePictures of trees bending in the wind.

Gathering The Lord be with you.And also with you.Open the Worship box and set up the Worship table for the week.

Engaging Remind the children about our Worships about the hats, triangle etc and The Trinity.Look at the triangle picture with the folds. Can the children remember what the three parts of the Trinity are?Today we are going to think about the last part of the Trinity – the Holy spirit. This is the hardest part to understand because you can’t see the Holy Spirit so how do we know it is there? Think about trees outside – What makes them move? The wind. Can we see it? No, but it is still there. I have my mobile phone with me today and I thought it was a bit like the Trinity. There is the actual phones casing that I am holding and there is the workings inside it which makes it work. That’s two bits. Phone text message needs to be sent at this point. What was that? A message? Did you see it come in? Where did it come from? Read the message. The message is like the third part of the Trinity. We didn’t see the message come in but we know it’s there. You can’t see the Holy Spirit but you do see His affects in people’s lives.Show the utube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqG_lvZhU-A about Pentecost. The Holy Ghost helps God the Father and God the son. He is a spirit so he can quietly put ideas into our minds and give us feelings of happiness and comfort.Explain that the Holy Ghost loves us and helps us choose the right thing. Have the children think of some things they have done that are good, such as obeying their parents, helping others, and saying their prayers. How do you feel when you do things that are right? How do you feel when you do things that are wrong?Explain that the Holy Ghost helps us know the difference between right and wrong by giving us a good, warm feeling when we do something right and a sad feeling when we do something wrong.Ask the children to share times when they have felt a good, warm feeling because they have made a right choice or helped someone. Help them recognize the influence of the Holy Ghost.

Can the children remember what the three parts of the Trinity are?Today we are going to think about the Trinity as a whole.Show the triangle picture with three parts making one whole.Show more pictures of the Trinity and point out the three parts making the whole. Has anyone got any more ideas as to how to show the Trinity? Someone may be willing to have a go – have paper available for children to draw on. Show the green ribbon – which part of the Trinity do the children think this represents? Take ideas and value each suggestion. It is actually green for God the Father who made the green earth and created the world. Show the red ribbon – which part of the Trinity do the children think this represents? Take ideas and value each suggestion. It is actually red for God the son, Jesus. Jesus died on the cross – blood is red. Show the white ribbon – which part of the Trinity do the children think this represents? Take ideas and value each suggestion. It is actually white for the Holy Spirit. Listen to what John’s gospel from the Bible has to say about the Holy Spirit. “Jesus said “I will ask the Father and he will give you another helper, who will stay with you for ever. He is the Spirit who reveals the truth about God.” Now we have three ribbons, red, green and white. Three separate ribbons but the Trinity is also 3 in 1 so how can we make the three ribbons one? Take ideas – hopefully someone will suggest plaiting the ribbons. Show how to plait the ribbons into one whole or ask a confident child to do it. As we look at the plait let’s think about the all the Worships we have had over the last few weeks on the Trinity. We can now begin to understand that the Trinity is made up of three persons but together they make one whole. Woven into out plait is God’s love for all of us.

The Potter’s Wheel by Heidi ElksThere was once a potter who had a potter’s wheel and a lump of clay. Do you know what a potter is? Someone who creates objects out of clay.Well one day the potter sat down at his potter’s wheel with his lump of clay and thought to himself “What shall I create today?” He thought and thought and thought, but he couldn’t think of anything to make with his potter’s wheel and his lump of clay. He kept wondering to himself “Umm what shall I create today?” but he still couldn’t think of anything to create with his potter’s wheel and his clay. He thought and thought and thought some more. Infact he sat and thought for three whole days, just sitting silent and still at his potter’s wheel and thinking about what to create with his lump of clay. Suddenly out of the corner of his eye he saw a tiny ant crawl across the potter’s wheel, over the clay and down the other side. The potter watched the ants little legs working and his tiny body moving and thought to himself “What an amazing little creature.” Then the potter saw a fluttering movement out of the corner of his other eye. It was a beautiful butterfly fluttering by with brightly decorated wings. The potter thought to himself “What an amazing little creature.” Then suddenly a fly appeared and landed on the potter’s nose. The potter sat quietly and didn’t move a muscle. The fly walked along his nose with little tickly feet. The potter was astonished and thought to himself “What an amazing little creature.”The potter moved to scratch his head and the fly flew off. The potter was puzzled and amazed at the three small animals he had seen. “Who made these amazing creatures?” he asked himself. “Who made their little legs and their beautiful wings? They may be little but they are just perfect.”

A little voice in his head replied “God made these animals and all the animals of the world. God created the trees and the flowers, the earth and the stars and he created you.” The potter sat and smiled to himself. “Now I know what I will make with my potter’s wheel and my lump of clay.”

The story doesn’t say what the potter made. What do you think the potter made? If you were the potter what would you have made?ReflectionsSometimes we are so busy rushing around that we do not notice all of the wonderful things around us. God created the world for us to enjoy and for us to look after. Sometimes we need to sit still and just look at the world and thank God for creating our wonderful world.
