INTRODUCTION

Anglican parish registers of baptisms, marriages and burials and the bishops’ transcripts of

parish registers are two of the most heavily consulted series of original records in the custody

and care of the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service. Both sources are invaluable

for research into family history. The purpose of this publication is twofold: to indicate which

parish registers are available for consultation at the Staffordshire Record Office and to give

details of the bishops’ transcripts for the Diocese of Lichfield, available for consultation at the

Lichfield Record Office.

The Parochial Registers and Records Measure, 1978, amended 1992, requires parishes to

deposit with an approved repository parish records which are over 100 years old, or which were

started over 150 years ago, unless the parish itself can provide the storage conditions specified in

the Measure. Under the Parochial Registers and Records Measure, the Staffordshire Record

Office is the repository approved by the Diocese of Lichfield for the deposit of Anglican parish

registers from the Archdeaconries of Stoke on Trent, Lichfield and Walsall, and Lichfield

Record Office for Lichfield City parishes. These ecclesiastical administrative areas encompass

the geographical area of the former historic county of Staffordshire. Registers for Anglican

parish churches which are now in the county of the West Midlands or in the City of Stoke on

Trent can therefore be found on deposit at the Staffordshire Record Office, unless stated

otherwise.

From 1597 individual parishes were required to return transcripts of parish register entries

annually to the diocesan registry. These are now held as part of the diocesan records at the

Lichfield Record Office, which acts as the Diocesan Record Office. The transcripts cover the

former Diocese of Lichfield, that is Staffordshire, Derbyshire, northern Shropshire and north-

eastern Warwickshire, and the peculiar jurisdictions within the Diocese, that is, those parishes

exempt from the jurisdiction of the bishop. With the exception of a few parishes, the earliest

transcripts survive only from the 1660s, traditionally thought to be as a result of loss during the

Civil War and the Commonwealth period. There is no uniform cut-off date for the transcripts of

baptisms and burials and these can cease at any time between the 1830s and 1880s. Marriages

are normally omitted after 1837.

Additional information about the background and content of parish registers and bishops’

transcripts can be found in the Family History Guide for Beginners, published by and available

from any of the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service access points. Please enquire

for current price and rates of postage.

THE ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE OF ANGLICAN PARISHES IN

STAFFORDSHIRE

The administrative structure of Anglican parishes is fairly complex. The ancient parishes of

Staffordshire are those which were listed in the returns of “the state and regiment of the Diocese

of Coventry and Lichfield”, returned in 1563, of which there were 143 in the county. Generally

the majority of these parishes were in place from the beginning of the 13th century. However

there were some changes after the dissolution of the monasteries when former monastic

churches, such as Burton on Trent, became parish churches with a definite district assigned to

them. Other monastic churches were destroyed and their former districts assigned to another

parish church.

Some ancient parishes in Staffordshire, such as Leek, Wolstanton and Wolverhampton, St.

Peter, were geographically very large and, for the convenience of those people who lived at

some distance from the parish church, chapels were built to serve a clearly defined area. Many

of these chapelries were licensed initially only to perform baptisms and burials, with the right to

Page 4: DERBYSHIRE BISHOPS’ TRANSCRIPTS - Home - … · exempt from the jurisdiction of the bishop. With the exception of a few parishes, the earliest transcripts survive only from the

Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service 4

perform marriages being reserved to the mother church. The chapelries which are listed in this

guide include a number also listed in the 1563 returns. Chapels of ease were also built in some

large parishes and were attached to the main parish church. In general terms these had no

distinct geographical area assigned to them. In Staffordshire many chapels of ease were formerly

mediaeval chantry chapels.

A map of the ancient parishes in Staffordshire is available from any of the Archive Service

access points, current price £0.60 plus postage and packing.

Extra parochial places, or liberties as they were sometimes known, were areas that were not

considered to be part of any parish, usually because their population was so sparse.

During the 19th century, particularly after 1829, a large number of additional churches were built

and new ecclesiastical districts or parishes created to serve the rapidly increasing population in

urban areas such as the Potteries and the Black Country in Staffordshire. These new districts

were formed by taking parts out of one of more other parishes in the vicinity. In addition, some

existing chapelries became licensed to perform marriages. A further development in the late 19th

or early 20th

centuries in heavily populated parishes was the building of small mission churches

attached to a particular church. Such churches were usually only licensed for baptisms. During

the 20th century further new ecclesiastical districts have been created and new churches built,

usually in areas of new housing development. This publication attempts to include all such

parishes in the archdeaconries of Stoke on Trent, Lichfield and Walsall.

ARRANGEMENT OF THE GUIDE

The first part of the guide lists Staffordshire parishes alphabetically with the place name and the

dedication of the church. Under each entry, there is a brief note including its “status” and, where

relevant, the date when it became a parish, the parish(es) from which it was formed and the

parish upon which it was dependant, in the case of a chapelry, district or mission church. This

information should be used to help the user to identify which other parishes to search prior to the

first recorded date of the register entries. The ancient parishes are indicated in capital letters, and

chapelries, chapels of ease, modern ecclesiastical districts and extra parochial districts in lower

case letters.

This information is followed firstly by the dates for which the registers have been deposited at

the Staffordshire Record Office, or for which microform copies only are available; secondly, the

dates for which bishops’ transcripts are available at the Lichfield Record Office; and thirdly, if

the registers have been deposited elsewhere or if they remain in the custody of the appropriate

incumbent at the parish church itself. It can normally be assumed that the registers of parishes

for those years after the most recent dates deposited remain in the custody of the incumbents,

and any enquiries concerning these registers should be directed to them.

Where there are no holdings under a particular heading of baptisms, marriages or burials, this is

indicated by a line of dashes. This will normally indicate that registers are still held at the

church, unless the church has since closed, but it may not always be known whether there are

any registers at all, or whether, for instance, the church is not licensed to perform marriages.

Where it is known that no burial ground exists, this has been indicated.

Where there are no holdings at all because records are retained at the church, a starting date for

these registers has been given where known, but for many more recent churches information is

yet to be obtained as to the dates of any registers held at the church.

Page 5: DERBYSHIRE BISHOPS’ TRANSCRIPTS - Home - … · exempt from the jurisdiction of the bishop. With the exception of a few parishes, the earliest transcripts survive only from the

Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service 5

This guide does not include the holdings of printed, typescript or manuscript transcripts of parish

registers which may be available at any of the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service

access points or at the William Salt Library, Stafford. Separate lists of these are available.

The second part of the guide is devoted to the bishops’ transcripts, which are available at

Lichfield Record Office, for parishes in Derbyshire, northern Shropshire and north-eastern

Warwickshire. For these parishes the indication of whether a parish is an ancient one or not is

based on that given in Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England by F.A. Youngs (

RHS 1991). The ancient parishes are indicated in capital letters, and chapelries, chapels of ease,

more modern ecclesiastical districts and extra parochial districts in lower case letters. For details

of deposited parish registers for these counties, users are referred to Derbyshire Record Office,

County Hall, Matlock DE4 3AG; Shropshire Archives, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury SY1 2AS; and

Warwickshire Record Office, Priory Park, Cape Road, Warwick CV34 4JS.

CONSULTING PARISH REGISTERS AND BISHOPS’ TRANSCRIPTS

Some parish registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for 1900 and earlier

are available on the FindMyPast website, where originals are held by the Staffordshire and Stoke

on Trent Archive Service. This is a subscription website, and it can be accessed for free within

the service points of Archive Service, and the Staffordshire Library Service. These may be black

and white images from digitised microfilms, or scans from original registers. Other registers will

become available in the future. For a full list please contact Staffordshire Record Office.

Most original parish registers deposited at the Staffordshire Record Office also remain available

for consultation as microform copies. All registers with a starting date of 1925 or earlier have

been microfilmed, and registers of many urban parishes with a starting date of 1950 or earlier

have also been microfilmed. This is an essential preservation measure and is in line with the

Archive Service’s Preservation Policy and its commitment to the long-term preservation of

Staffordshire’s archival heritage. In addition, where Staffordshire parish registers have been

deposited elsewhere, the Record Office may hold microfiche or microfilm copies of these

registers for the convenience of users. Please note that recent additions within that date range

have not been microfilmed but will be made available online in the future, as above.

Lichfield Record Office holds duplicate microfiche copies of all Staffordshire parish registers

that have been microfilmed, so that these can be used in conjunction with the bishops’

transcripts held there. Lichfield Record Office also holds the original registers for the five

Lichfield parishes, and all original Bishops’ Transcripts.

Microfiche copies of registers for parish churches within the City of Stoke on Trent and urban

areas of Newcastle, starting 1950 and earlier, and for the northern half of Staffordshire starting

1925 and earlier, are available for consultation at Stoke on Trent City Archives.

Microfiche copies of registers for parish churches, and of bishops’ transcripts of Derbyshire

parishes, within the township of Burton on Trent are available for consultation at Burton Local

& Family History Centre.

Prior booking for Staffordshire Record Office, Lichfield Record Office and Stoke on Trent City

Archives is essential.

Microform copies of registers for many parishes in the Black Country are also held at the

respective archive offices, and there may also be other registers held at theseoffices for which no

copies are available at Staffordshire Record Office because the area falls outside the collecting

area for Staffordshire:

Walsall Local History Centre, Essex Street, Walsall WS2 7AS;

Wolverhampton Archives and Local Studies, Molyneux Hotel Building, Whitmore Hill,

Wolverhampton WV1 1SF;

Sandwell Community History and Archives Service, Smethwick Library, High Street,

Smethwick, Warley B66 1AB;

Dudley Archives and Local History Service, Tipton Road, Dudley DY1 4SQ;

Birmingham Archives, Heritage and Photography Service, Library of Birmingham, Centenary

Square, Broad Street, Birmingham B1 2ND.

A number of main libraries in Staffordshire hold microfiche or microfilm copies or transcripts of

registers for their immediate areas. Users are advised to check with them prior to a visit.
