Thank you to all of you who came to the Presentation Evening a couple of weeks ago. It was lovely to see everyone and we had some very positive comments about the new venue so I think we will try and use them again for the next Presentation evening. We are going to try to have it in December this year, date to be confirmed asap. We have had a very sad February losing "Fun Bobby" and "Big George" at the beginning of the month. Its never easy when you have to say goodbye to old friends and they have left a rather

large gap in the Dennett family. On a more positive note, the nights and mornings do seem to be getting lighter and there has been a real feeling of Spring in the air this week. I hope you are managing to get out to start to get fit for the season ahead. We have had our rides meeting and once again we are hoping for a packed schedule of rides, both social and competitive. Please try and look at the ride dates and let us know where you are able to help - send me an email or post something on our Facebook page. All the best and safe riding, Rachel

This year’s Inter-Regional competition will be held on 13 and 14 July at Kings Forest, Norfolk. For those who have never ventured this far south, this is one of the loveliest rides in the calendar. Miles of fantastic going through the woods with minimal roadwork and, possibly, no gates. Craig Chadwick has kindly agreed to get together a list of Derbyshire riders who would like to be considered, so if you would like to have a go, then contact Craig on chadwick394@btinternet.com tel: 01538 386455. We need riders and horses at all levels, particularly novice, so please put your name forward. Help with travel costs will be available, so let’s get the trophy back to the North West where it belongs!

FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2013. Hope you enjoy reading it. Thanks to Clair Calvert for her interesting article on Para Endurance. This could be a real opportunity to encourage disabled riders to take part in a sport which we all know can be so enjoyable and fulfilling. Articles are welcome – so please send me your photos and funny, tragic or heroic experiences – sharing is good, and I need some help filling the pages! I think we have a great programme of rides next year, and we are welcoming two new ride organisers – Clair Calvert and Sue Mayer. Please make a special effort to support these rides as there is nothing more discouraging to a ride

organiser than spending the weeks just before your ride wondering if you are going to get any entries at all. I hope you will all feel that you have a great opportunity to participate in the Inter-Regional Competition with travel funding in place. Being part of a team is a great experience and the competition needs riders and horses at all levels, so give it a go this year. Snow has, as usual, interrupted the training regime of anyone who lives in the Peak District, and I have definitely seen enough of the white stuff this year. Hope to see you all out and about soon. EDITOR’S REPORT

INTER-REGIONAL 2013

There will be raffles held at all Derbyshire Rides this year in aid of travel costs for anyone wishing to take part in the Inter-Regional Competition. The prize will be a voucher for a free entry to one of our Social Rides – of which there are many, so please give your support. Tickets will be £1 each and the prize is worth £10 or £15 depending on whether or not you are an EGB member.

TRAVEL FUNDING

The presentation evening for the heroes of the 2012 season was held, eventually, on Saturday 9 February at the Blue Bell, Tissington. The original date had to be altered as a result of a forecast for heavy snow and we apologise to anyone who was unable to attend on the rescheduled date. The room was ideal and the food and company were excellent. Many thanks must go to Chairperson Rachel Dennett who headed the evening despite feeling extremely unwell, just goes to show how tough endurance riders are! There was a good distribution of prizes in the competitive section, with Ruth Chadwick and Ann Harrison vyeing for top spot in several trophies. The pleasure riders section though, was a clean sweep for Jackie Rose and Baxter and a special award was given to Jackie for her outstanding achievement in completing 10,000 kilometres with the group – the first in Derbyshire’s history. Jackie was presented with a framed composite photograph, designed by West End Photography. Despite Baxter’s age and mileage, we confidently expect to see Jackie collecting more trophies and rosettes at the end of the 2013 season. Anyone who wasn’t able to pick up their rosettes on the night will have them posted to them, but we hope you can make it to the 2013 presentation evening which we are hoping to hold in December this year.

I am sure that you all appreciate the lovely professional photos that are used in our newsletters (as well as those taken by gifted amateurs, sorry Mike). We are allowed to use these by permission only and please remember that you are liable to prosecution if you use any professional photo without asking first. Both David Saunders and West End Photography are extremely generous in allowing the use of their photographs – all they ask is a printed acknowledgement – so be polite and just make the phone call or e-mail if you want to reproduce any image.

At the end of last year Endurance GB launched its latest initiative: Para Endurance. It is hoped that this will encourage disabled riders of all abilities to take part in endurance rides! As a disabled rider, this is something very close to my heart and I feel that it is an excellent way to encourage disabled riders, where possible, to get out and about and enjoy the countryside. Endurance GB has joined forces with the RDA to offer rides starting at 1 to 10km at RDA centres and distances above this through EGB at National and local rides. Below is a summary of the Para Endurance rules, a full list of which is available in the 2013 Riders Handbook (pages 109-113) Para endurance riders will be required to be assessed through a RDA assessor to give a grade.

An ID card will give details of the rider’s disability and any compensating aids required. The full and comprehensive list of these is available on the EGB website. Escort riders can also be used to accompany the Para endurance rider. Escort riders can either enter Hors Concours, paying half the entry fee but not being eligible for any trophy points gained from that class. Both horse and rider must be qualified to enter the class. An escort rider may also enter a similar class to the Para endurance rider in the normal way and agree to take responsibility for the rider they escort. However if the escort rider is forced to withdraw for any reason, the Para rider must also do so, unless a transfer of responsibility can be arranged. I am a member of the Para Endurance committee and we are working to produce a list of Para-friendly rides to allow riders to make informed choices of rides to enter. Currently Equilibrium Lindum Spirit, has full disabled facilities, including toilets and is also offering RDA classes! The College Ride at Keysoe, 15th and 16th September also has disabled facilities. Using myself as an example, I have Rapidly Evolving Remitting Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis. The result of this is that I have significant weakness to my left leg, left hand/arm and slowly increasing weakness to my right side. I also suffer with serious muscle pain, which riding helps with. I started doing Endurance in 2007; two years after I was first diagnosed with MS and have competed at distances of 40km. As my disability has

increased I have had adaptations added to my saddle. Les Spark of Free ‘n’ Easy saddles has been extremely helpful in designing and making blocks to attach to the flaps of my saddle, so that my legs stay in place. I also have to use stirrups with cages, as I can’t always feel where my left foot is. I currently don’t use any special reins, but am starting to look into using loops or ladder reins as I regularly drop my reins. I also have a grab strap in case my balance wobbles. I have to mount from a high mounting block and need help with dismounting. I have an amazing Dales mare, Rose who looks after me and compensates for my lack of balance. I can’t really walk far anymore, so Rose is now my legs! I also have a large off road mobility scooter that I often use at multiday rides, especially Lindum. For 2013 a group of like-minded Para-endurance riders are hoping to take a team to Lindum and compete in the Team Spirit!
