Editor 's NotesFirst of all I would like to thank those who took the trouble 10 respond 10 the

Reader Survey (the results of which arc published in this issue along with commentsreceived). and to say that we arc now looking al ways of meeting some of thesuggestions. For example we arc now seeking a young person to he responsible forthe reporting of youth affairs in the village. ami arc attempting to obtain fixtures andreports from the sports clubs in the area. Other items will be dealt with as we hawthe opportunity, but pIU could help by using your local Knowledge and submittingcontributions based on the type of subjects thilt arc highlighted in the commen ts. orby sending us old photographs of the village (or of events in the village ) which wecan use for publication.

There was an error in my Sandringham View article in the last issue. to whichmy attention has now been drawn hy more than one reader, I had written that RcgHouchen ran his coach business from the garage at the corner of Post Office Roadbut my informants tell me that his garage was in fact situated on the site from whichAJD Motors now operate in Bank Road.

As we now approach Easter and the coming summer months il would be greal toreceive details and photographs of any local events which take place, and don'tforget that if you have something special going on we may be able 10 supply someoneto take photos for publication.

Finally, we arc very well supported by our advertisers but would welcome anynew requests for space which can be purchased for as little as i12 for a sixth of apage, up to £50 for a full page. This is very good value when you consider that wehave a bi-monthly circulation figure of 2,500 copies. Details can be obtained fromClare Thornson who is the Assistant Parish Clerk, and who can be contacted t ill

Parish Council ReportAS usual. the Parish Council held a special meeting in mid-January to set its

precept (the Parish share ofthe Council Tax). The Council agreed a tax rate of0 1.()4 for a Band [) property. an increase of £5. 14. 0 .75 of this rise is due to theabolit ion of a 'concurrent functions' grant previously paid by the Borough Council, achange balanced by a corres ponding reduction in the Borough Council's spendingand therefore cutting its Council Tax demand. The Parish Council also agreed totake some E11 .000 from reserves to pay tor some one-off improvements.

The main January meeting heard a presentation about the work of the WestNorfolk Community Transport Project. which operates the Dial-a-Bus service .People with disabilities or difficulties accessing public transport can use the serviceat a charge of £3 for a return trip. The Council also agreed to investigate problemscaused by parking in Manor Road in the vicinity of Brook Road.

The February meeting heard that the Council's reques t to r bus stop signs to beinsta lled at all the stops in the village will be met during the current enhancementwork. The County Counci l has also agreed to improve the visihility of the beacons onthe pedestr ian crossing adjace nt to Budgcns.

The Council received the resignations of two of its members, Mrs J Livcrmorcand Mr R Stanton. Anyone interested in ti lling one of these vacancies should contactthe Parish Clerk on Ol4X5 54 1465.

The April meeting of the Council (7 pm on Monday 26 April at the First School)is to hear a presentat ion from representatives of Hrancasrer Parish Council abourhow it helped fac ilitate the building of some affordable homes in their village. ASusual. any village r wishing to attend will he welco me.

The next FUL L COUJ\ClL MEETINGS will take place at the First and NurserySchool in Saxon Way at 7. 15 pm on Monda y 26 April. Monday 10 May, and Monday2XJune 2004. Members of the public are given the opportunity 10ask questions ormake comments during the 15 minutes before and after the meeting.

the res ults of wh ich are shown below (we received 43 respo nses which is equi valen tto 1.72'10 of the number of magazines ci rcula ted) .

Although this was quite a low respo nse, it nevertheless ident ifies a direction forthe future of the publicat ion. and one which we will attemp t to fo llow.

It would appear that there is a very high interest in issues involving local interest.loc al history , the surgery, local events. and police matters. with more than 50% ofrespondents taking at least a mod erate interest in the type of article which wefeature. The results below. allied to some of the comments on the opposite page willgive the ed itorial statTan idea of what should be included in future issues of what is.alter 'all, your magazine .

Greenish Fingers' Garden NotebookThe seasons become more confusing. On 3 Febru ary the maximum temperature

in our garden was 60"'F and a mild 50°F at night. AI the end of Februa ry there was aspell of sleet and snow and freez ing temperatures. In 2002 I noted on 2 February thatthe frogs were stirri ng in our pond; yet this year, for the fi rst time in ten years, weseem to be frogless. Cats? A heron? Surely a few ofa couple ofdozen frogs wouldsurvive their at tention? Is the weather to blame?

Today 16 March , it's mild and sunny as I write. Our rob in. which was thankfu lfor every grain of birdseed and crumb it was offered a fortnigh t ago , is hoppingaround with fragments of dry grass in its beak . It must be starting on the severalnests it builds for the female's inspection and eventual approval!

There are long-railed tits Fli rting in the apple tree. goldfi nches convers ing in theconi fer hedge . a wren scolding me yesterday j ust fin being there at a ll! During thecold snap we were visited by ficldfarcs. which feasted alongside the blackbirds Oil

last year 's windfalls. which we' d stored O il purpos('. I've read that birds lose about athird of their body weight during the cold winter nights, so they do need to cat andeat and eat .

So many pretty fro nt ga rdens III Dcrsinghum! Every year I' m specially entrancedhy the miniature narcissi everyw here . It' s wonderful how they withstand such abattering by wind, snow and hail , bending and bowing and whipping abou t. thendusting themselves otf smiling aga in when it's calmer. I am a little saddene dthough. by the gardens that seem over-manicured: 110 rough bits for all the fauna thattry to share our patch of earth with us. There must be shagg ier areas, of course out ofsight. in back gardens. Even a proportion of lawn edges allowed to curl over. insteadof being sharply "edged", will provide shelter for little creatures such as beetles.ladybirds and frogs.

PS Before lighting a bonfire that you' ve been building up for months or weeks. oreven days. chec k it well for said small creatures. Grass snakes/mice will probablyslither/run away, but toads are not so quick. and hedgehogs lIlay still he hihem ating.

Oatmeal PorridgeOatmeal is recommended by nutrition ists for its "soluhlc" fibre. and much

besides. It's certa inly delicious and susta ining and easy to prepare as porridge. I buyit at a large hea lth food shop, hut it is probably available at larger supermarkets. 11comes in fine, med ium and coarse grades . I' ve tried only the coa rse .

For each person, allow 25g110z oatmea l and 1701111/6 fluid oz liquid. which canbe wate r, milk. or a mixture. I use water. III the morn ing, stir the mixture and coo kgently for five to seven minutes. Add a pinch of salt if you like. Serve with milk andany of the accom paniments I suggested for porr idge made with porridge oats.

BirdsongI' ve always env ied those who can name a bird from the faintest chirp, chi rrup or

cheep. I don't have this skill and can usually only identify very distinc tive birdsounds like the crepuscular chi rring of it nightjar or a yellow ham mer 's plea for, "alittle piece ofhread hut no chcceese". The exception to this is the song of thenightingale, which managed to penetra te even my dull, tone-deaf senses the firsttime I hea rd one. Their name or iginates from the Old English niht (night) and ga lan(to sing). although they also sing du ring the day. To add mor e confus ion, other birdssomet imes sing at night - particularly robins (prime suspect for the sing ing inBcrkclcy Square) . Robins and nightingales both belong to the thrush family andthey arc both acco mplished songsters. The song of a robin is so lid silver - thenightingale's is liquid go ld. The sudden pauses midway throu gh an elaborate trilladds drama and tens ion to thei r performance - particularly not iceable when they aresinging alone in the middle of the night. I was kept awake by a nightingale 'smela ncho ly song while on holiday in France last year but don 't regret a minute ofthat enforced insomnia .

We do have loca l sites where it is possible to hear nightingales during thei rsumme r vis its to this country - sadly. these places see m to get fewer each yea r.Perhaps the most reliable site is the sma ll wood land alongside the cycle track wherethe o ld Lynn Road once swung towards Castle Rising and the Wootons. Theindigenous Dersinghamitcs amongst you will probably know this as ' Onion Corner '- named after the powerfu l smell that comes from the wild garlic carpeting the dampwoodland 1100r . If you plan to go there in sea rch of nightinga les, the best time isdusk on a calm warm day in late May or June . With patience, it is also possible tosec a nightingale but they do have a repu tation for skulking in the undergrowth. They arc actua lly rathe r handsome birds with a chestnut tail, warm brown upperparts and whi te undersides. They also have large black eyes to help them see in thedark.

Of course, nightingale s arc not singing fo r us. The song of the male is used to

attract a mate and ho ld territory - servi ng the same function as the gaudy plum age ofcock pheasants tha t do their cou rting in the open where vision is more impo rta ntthan sound. The process of natura l se lect ion can exp lain all of this. Why a big fatape should be standing in the dark listen ing to them is much harder to explain.

DERSINGHAM PARISH CHURCHYARDI was picking over rubbish on the churchyard comp ost heap. "How long is it

going to take you tofind that ]{I pence piece that you've lost'!", sa id a passcr-by.Well, I wasn't finding anything as interesting as that. I was doing the weekly tidy lipof the huge compos t heap bes ide the Tithe Ham.

If the heap is kept clear of non-cornposrablc material the Church Council canhaw it removed without COSI. However, if it contains plastic bags. flower pOIS.synthetic flowers. "Oasis" (blocks of a solid green sponge-like material used bytlon srs t.flower wruppcrsand plant food sachets. glass jars and the metallic or pla:-. tieframes of wreaths. ere. me church has to pay for its removal.

To save such costs and inconvenience voluntee rs work tu keep the heap clear.there are also two wa:...tc bins near the compost heap. but these till up very quicklywith items which people could talc home and place in their green re-cycling boxes.

The considerat ion and helpfulness uf all those who visit rbc gra\'es would bemuch appreciated. I haw heard visitors make very complimentary remarks about theappearance of the churchyard. With the en-operation of all who tend their p lOIS wecan maintain this standard.

Growing OldIn old age the minu ses are well known. we arc like an old ca r going. for its .MOT.

Bits and pieces go wrong, especially in our waterworks, which may nOI be the worstbut arc certainly the mo st damaging to your dign ity, As we gel older our memorybegins to fade, as does our atten tion. Fur some, old age is a tragedy when they feellike young people locked in an old person's body. They have not bothered 10 grow upas they grow old. For me the won-t is burying old friends : they can never be replaced.

My mother, even during the final years of her life, always told me to count mybless ings and to make a treat even out of old age. "When you' re old," she pointedout. "you could at las t say what you think and cat what you like." She liked youngcouples courting, life bursting out in all its forms and, whilst in the residential home, seeing two zjmrncrs clash . Mum taught me not to be envious or jealou .. and the joyin my belief of life herea fter,

My therapy for growing old is work. Old people no longer have 10doze inCOOlers or be exported to Benidorrn. Wc are also permitted to be in love and makelovc (with a little less climax which is easier on the nerves). We can make jokesabout sex and know how to handle it. The old can also enjoy joke s about theircond ition, which means we remain on top of it.

A social worker. hurrying to yet ano ther case meeting, Sl'CS a ' case' sitting on apark bench . The old man is sobbing his hean out. Knowing that his wife hadrecently died she asks compassionately, "Is your house in wrack and ruin and youdon't want 10 go bad: there? DOlI 't worry, I' ll come with you:'

"O h no," he replies, " I' ve gOI a lovel y warm, comfortable house."" Is it then, that you miss your wife and feel alone; that no one cares for you?""Oh no, it' s not that. I married a beautiful young woman immed iately after the

funeral: '"Ah I sec ," 5aYS the socia l worker, "you're 100 old for her, feel inadequate and

that she's only after your money.""No 1\0, Ifs not like that: ' says the old man. "She loves me dear ly: '"So what's your problem?" asks the bewildered social worker. "Look, I'll take

you home in my car so that you don't ha..·c to worry about buses or taxis." says thesocial worker kindly, "That will be nice won 't it?"

The old man sobs even more, " You can't: ' he cries. "I ' ve forgotten where I live!"Lcn Mauhews
