We offer various technological solutions for over voltage protection:

The energy capability of lightning arresters is not infinite. In rare cases, approximately 1 lightning strike in 10,000 exceeds this energy capability. Thearrester then fails in permanent short-circuit; the line circuit breaker opens andcauses definitive outage of power supply.Depending on the service quality required, the network operator has a choicebetween several installation systems.

AZB--0/AZBD--0/AZC--0/EZB--0/EZBD--0 : Arrester module is installed alonebetween line and grounding bracket. In this case the network operator must deploymaintenance staff to locate and change the failed arrester. As it is not easy to identify afailed arrester from the outside, several hours may elapse before the line can beenergised again.

AZB--1/AZBD--1/AZC--1/EZB--1/EZBD--1: A 150 A sensitivity fault indicatoris fitted with the arrester. A black silicone band is clamped around the arrester housingand is visible from several hundreds metres away. When the arrester fails, the band fallsoff and maintenance personnel just have to locate the arrester without black band.Outage duration is significantly reduced. This device can be utilized for networks withgrounded or low ohmic neutral, with high ground fault currents.

AZP--/AZBDP--/AZCP--/EZP--/EZBDP-- : For network with impedancegrounded or ungrounded neutral, with low ground fault currents, we offer 15 A sensitivityfault indicator. This device is screwed onto the arrester and indicates the short-circuit byan orange signal, which is visible from a distance of several hundred metres.Maintenance staff can thus quickly locate the arrester to be changed.

AZB--2/AZBD--2/AZC--2/EZB--2/EZBD--2 : Arrester module is fixed to thepole by insulating bracket. It is connected to ground by a disconnector. When short-circuit occurs, this device disconnects the arrester. The operator can then energize lineagain without having to change the arrester. The power supply is restored quickly butover voltage protection is removed. The network operator must implement periodicmaintenance inspection to replace disconnected arresters.

AZICS--/AZCICS-- : For operators whose network is already spark gap protected, this arrester improves spark gap performances by eliminating power follow currents. There are no more spurious flashovers nor therefore micro cuts and risks to safety. Thistechnological solution can be adapted to rigid insulators or tension insulator strings. Thearrester module is supplied with arcing horn and can be directly fixed to the spark gapside.

AZE--T : Fitted with specific varistors for DC voltage, this arrester is designed for overvoltage protection in DC railway systems. Its high energy capability and resistance tovibrations, make it suitable for installation on locomotives.

AZB / EZB /AZC series:

Zinc oxide varistors are connected in series with aluminium electrodesinto polymeric tube. The Silicone rubber is directly injected into thetube and over the zinc oxide varistor stack. This ensures both sealingand geometry of external insulation. This construction provides both absolute sealing, exceptional resistance to pollution and excellent behaviour without explosion incase of short-circuits.

Application GuideThis guide provides recommendations for selection and application

of DERVASIL lightning arresters to be used for overvoltage protection.

DERVASIL Lightning Arrester Technology:DERVASIL Lightning arrester is a combination of zinc oxide varistors, internal fiber glass structure and Silicone rubber housing.DERVASIL offers two technologies.

AZBD / EZBD series:

Zinc oxide varistors are connected in series with aluminium electrodesto form a complete stack. This stack is tightly wrapped with glass filament impregnated with epoxy resin. This assembly is cured to forma rigid and mechanically strong rod.The Silicone rubber is directly injected over this rod and over aluminiumelectrodes to ensure both sealing and geometry of external insulation. This construction reduces external dimensions and weight and improvesmechanical performance of lightning arresters.

Basic characteristics of DERVASIL Lightning Arrester for three phase systemNominal discharge current In and line discharge class:In IEC 600099-4 the energy absorption capability of lightning arrester is linked to the nominal discharge current In and to the line dischargeclass. As a general rule, the following values of In and line class are suitable:

In system where line distances between arresters are below 5 km or for areas with low ground flash density and low earth resistance, 5 kAlightning arresters may be sufficient. For areas with high lightning flash density or high earth resistance, 10 kA class 1 lightning arrester arepreferable.

For better protection level or for important installations 10 kA class 2 lightning arrester are recommended.

For specific applications as cable or capacitor bank protection, DERVASIL experts can determine good choice.

Continuous Operating Voltage Uc :Uc is the maximum permissible voltage which may be continuously applied between the lightning arrester terminals. As a general rule, Ucshould be:

System with solidly grounded neutralUc higher than 0.58*Un max system

System with low ohmic neutralUc higher than 0.87*Un max system

AZB line arrester does not have spark gaps in series. The zinc oxidevaristors are designed to withstand the continuous phase to groundvoltage of network. They are capable of bearing increasedoperational voltages over a long period. The temporary over voltagecharacteristics give the duration T and corresponding TOV withrespect to continuous voltage Uc. The curve E = 0 is valid for arresters without energy preloading. Theother curve is valid for arresters, which are already absorbedimpulses corresponding to their maximum energy absorptioncapability.

AZC line arrester does not have spark gapsin series. The zinc oxide varistors aredesigned to withstand the continuous phaseto ground voltage of network. They arecapable of bearing increased operationalvoltages over a long period. The temporaryover voltage characteristics give the durationT and corresponding TOV with respect tocontinuous voltage Uc. The curve E = 0 is valid for arresters withoutenergy preloading. The other curve is validfor arresters, which are already absorbedimpulses corresponding to their maximumenergy absorption capability.

ZC-B1M Surge counter with leakage current meter for Dervasil lightning arrester

3736

AccessoriesAccessories

ZC-B1M Surge counter is a device to record the number of lightning and switching surgedischarges. ZC-B1M Surge counter can be used with class 1 & 2 DERVASIL lightning arrestersand also similar arresters of other manufacturers. Number of discharges is recorded by 5-digit cyclometer and readings can be taken through theinspection window.Leakage current of lightning arrester is measured by 0-3mA scale readingmilliammeter.ZC-B1M Surge counter does not need any auxiliary power supply

Technical description

Insulating capfor Dervasil lightning arrester

The Dervasil insulating cap (Polyamid molded) is especially designed to feet on lighting arrester.

Technical description

Insulating cap

ZC-B1M Surge counter operates on lightning impulse current (8/20µs wave) more than 100A and can operate perfectly if the interval of multiple lightning strokes is more than 0.2s.Potential across the ZC-B1M Surge counter is less than 50V crest under normal operating conditions.Residual voltage at 10kA(8/20µs wave) of the ZC-B1M Surge counter is less than 3 kV and has negligible effect on the protection level of the lightning arrester.Discharge current capability is 100kA (4/10µs wave) and 1000A (2ms rectangular wave)

Performance

Dimensions

ZC-B1M Surge counter is connected between the earth terminal of thelightning arrester and the earth. It should be mounted as close as possibleto the lightning arrester and length of connecting wires should be as shortas possible. The connecting wire used between surge counter andlightning arrester should an insulated wire with impulse withstand voltagemore than 5 kV.
