לאחר פטירתה של פרחה שמחה, נאספו לתוך אלבום גדול ביטויי האבל השונים על פטירתה: ההספדים שנישאו בעת הלוויה, המברקים ומכתבי הניחומים שנשלחו למשפחה, גזרי עיתונות שבהם

וויה, ואפילו סרטים שנקשרו לזרי הפרחים דווח על הסתלקותה של אם המשפחה, צילומים ממסע הלשהונחו על קברּה. זהו אוסף נדיר המאפשר לנו להיחשף להיבטים שונים של תרבות האבל שהייתה

השפות שבהן תיקשרו –מקובלת לפני כשמונים שנה, כפי שבאה לביטויי בעברית, ערבית וצרפתית השונות שבאלבום ניתן לשחזר מי בני משפחת שלוש באותה עת. אך מעל לכול, מתוך התעודות

הייתה פרחה שמחה, אם המשפחה ועקרת הבית.

Dear Family, For many years, a number of Chelouche family members have had a commitment to find a way to keep the descendents of Aaron Chelouche connected on a regular basis. Today, we are proud to present the eleventh email newsletter of the Chelouche family and provide you with news and updates on family members throughout the world. The previous newsletter, no. 10, was distributed in April 2014. We are happy to send you the eleventh edition. We hope that the information in this newsletter is of interest and that you will take the time to visit the family’s web site. Your support in providing content is crucial to the future of this initiative. You are all invited to take part and assist in order to enable us to continue to distribute future editions of this newsletter and also expand the content and membership count of our family web site. Important: Email addresses are changed over time, and people forget to update the family database. Please check with those close to you if they received this newsletter. If not – it might be a result of the fact that their email in the family database is not updated. Please ask them to contact Tari to get it updated. 1. Family Web site updates Efforts to enrich the family web-site have been ongoing since October 2007. To-date there are 1384 people registered in the family tree, and it is far from being complete. The number of members in the web-site is now 282. The number of photos and articles is increasing continuously. The family web-site at MyHeritage offers a new service of production of printed family trees. You can customize the generation depth and presentation layout as you wish. Thereafter, you can request to receive a PDF file, for printing with your home printer. Alternatively, you can order a poster size print (requires payment). Surf to:

We recommend you experiment with this fun application and use it for some quality-time study of family roots with your children/grandchildren. New: MyHeritage application for mobile devices. This application will allow you to enjoy the web-site features – the family tree, sharing photos etc., while you are on the move. We are in need of additional content that can enrich our family web-collection. So please, search the drawers and the old cupboards for old picture-albums boxes with the forgotten documents – and send them to us to be included in the web site.

Torild van Eck z”l passed away on November 30th 2014 at the age of 65. Torild was the husband of Ruth van Eck – Rotholtz and the father of Miriam and Rachel. In the attachment you can to find an article written by his wife Ruth, who shares with us a brief summary of Torild’s life story. Blessed be his memory.

4. A Cup of Consolation on a Virtuous Woman -

Tracing the Last Journey of Freha Simha Chelouche (Yosef Eliyahu Branch)

On April 15th, 1934, Freha Simha Chelouche, wife of Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche, passed away. The couple was one of the sixty-six founding families of Tel-Aviv. We have extensive documentation on the life of Yosef Eliyahu, telling us about his life as a public figure and a contractor who built thirty-two of the first sixty-six houses in Tel

Aviv. Yet only a little was written about his wife – Simha Freha, who stood beside him and supported him throughout his public activities. After the death of Simha Freha, various expressions of sympathy and condolences related to her death were collected into an album. These include obituaries, condolences letters and telegrams received by members of the family, reports in the newspapers, photos from the funeral, and even the ribbons that were attached to the flower bouquets. This is a rare collection which exposes us to various aspects of the mourning culture which was customary eighty years ago, and its expression in Hebrew, Arabic and French - the three languages used by members of the Chelouche family at that time. But above all, from the different documents in the album one can reconstruct the character of Simha Freha – the mother of the family. Two years ago the album was handed over to me. Flipping through the pages I was able to embark on a journey in the time tunnel, to get deeper knowledge of the personality of my great-grandmother. The article (in Hebrew, in the attachment) was published this week in the publication “Chidushei Torah @ NDS”. As a method to reconstruct the character of Freha Simha, the article studies the various quotes from the bible which were found in some of the obituaries and condolences letters – and which were used to characterize Freha Simah. This is the reason the title was selected to be: “A Cup of Consolation on a Virtuous Woman”. Both terms are taken from the Bible and were found in the researched texts.

Neither shall men break bread for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead;

neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their

mother (Jeremia 16, 7).

A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband; but she that doeth shamefully is as

rottenness in his bones (Proverbs 12, 4).

Tari Chelouche 5. Passover Seder 2015 for the Descenadnats of Meir and Zehuvit Chelouche

Towards the upcoming Seder, Yossi Chelouche provided the following family update:

Dear Family

I excited to tell you about an upcoming event of the descendants of Meir and Zehuvit

Chelouche z”l.

Elior Sorek (Pelossof) and Sarah Chelouche (wife of Ehud, son of Avigdor), raised a very

moving idea which is taking shape in these very days.

Sarah and Udi Chelouche will be hosting at their home, the entire branch of the

descendants of Zehuvit and Meir Chelouche z”l, to celebrate a family Seder (42

participants) in the spirit of the tradition of family Seders which uncle Hillel z”l began.

All the branch is excited to take part. The women are helping out with the food

preparation, using recipes of grandmother Zehuvit z”l. The entire family, including some

coming from abroad, are dedicated to this event. Mano, the eldest of the descendants of

Meir and Zehuvit z”l will be the master of ceremonies. He will be assisted by Meir

(Memi) Chelouche

We will be happy to share with you in the future, our impressions from this event.

For those of you who have still not made up their minds about the menu for the Seder dinner, here is a recipe taken from the cook-book of Zehuvit z”l:

Tortilla Espagnola

Ingredients: 12 eggs, One large onion chopped thin, 6 potatoes Preparation: Peel the potatoes and boil them in water, till they become very soft. Thereafter, cut them into small cubes. Chop the onion thin and fry until it receives a golden color. Scramble all the eggs and add salt and pepper according to taste. Stir all the ingredients together and fry in a small fire. Bon appétit

6. In memory of Annette Arouh z”l

On January 7th 2015, Annette Arouh passed away, at the age of 102 years. Annette was the daughter of Gamila and Meir Fedida z”l, wife of Jack Arouh z”l, mother of Ruth and Nava, both deceased, and Rina Schwartz and Ora Erez, may they both enjoy healthy long lives. Annette was the last of the generation of the grandchildren of Aharon and Sarah Chelouche. Her passing away marks the end of a generation in our family.

In the attachment you will find an article by her daughter Rina Schwartz, who shares with us a brief summary of her mother’s life story. Blessed be her memory. 7. A call to provide content and keep in touch

Finally, we are sending a “Call for Content” to all family members to contribute ideas, stories, information, photos, scans of interesting historical and genealogical documents, that will help enhancing the knowledge of our family history and strengthening family connections.
