Notes Her tombstone reads "In memory of our grand-mother". She was the grandmother of both JesseWatkins Wynne and his wife Margaret. Jesse was, according to an internet biography of him, saidto have been in Memphis at the start of the CivilWar, and that's close enough to Holly Springs toattend her funeral. That could be what brought himthere in the first place. I think Sarah is alsothe Sarah Wynne age 60 born in VA who appears onthe 1850 Marshall Co MS census living with thefamily of James M. Trotter. Who else could thatbe?

Servant AR Title: Terry Baker, [email protected]: I now have some update infothat will replace some of the data for these Wynnes at WorldConnect. I have Joel E. Wynne's will from St.Francis Co. AR. His obit in the Nashville Christian Advocate says he died 1 Jan 1885. I think that'scorrect. His will was dated 13 Dec 1882, probated 14 Jan 1885 . In it he mentions all his daughters, including Margaret, and most important, her husband Jesse W. Wynne. The thing that has always madepeople think her name was Ross is the way it looks on her tombstone. The Wynnes are all buried atHillcrest Cem Holly Springs MS and are at Findagrave.com with beautiful photos. Ross was Margaret'smiddle name and her mother's last name. I also found a bio of Jesse from 1899 in Confederate MilitaryHistory that says he was Isham Wynne's grandson. That means I was right that Devereaux Wynne wasRobert and Joel's uncle and guardian, not Robert's bilogical father. Robert was Jesse's biological father, and that's never been in dispute. I updated a lot of marriage and death records from the Shelby Co TNwebsite Tom Leatherwood, Shelby County Register of Deeds so now my website www.baker-brady.com isas up to date as I can make it. Jesse's obit says he died on 2 May, so his tombstone is wrong on that. Therewere two papers in Memphis and both carried obits that agreed, and one had a photo that matched both ofmine, except Jesse was older in theirs. My thinking on the Wynne tombstones is that they were put upsometime after the deaths and so they have a few errors. Thanks, Terry Baker Title: Sarah Pointer StithNotesText: Died in Ark. The date could be as early as1833 if the paper was correct. My old notepad says1834. 1833 was sent by Brenda Fiddler who found itin the 1833 Henderson Co TN newspaper.

Photos Wynne, Joel Echols? 1870s"Papa" is written in pencil on the back. The logo on the back is Balch's Studio inForrest City, Ark . This could very well beAlice Wynne's "Papa", Joel E. Wynne, since itwas in her 1865 album. The man looks in his 60s,and in 1872, Joel would have been that age.He is listed on the 1870 and 1880 census forFranks township, St. Francis Co AR. H.A. Balch

8

was a rather mobile artiste. He was born inOH about 1826 and was rooming in Gallatin TNin 1860. In 1870 he lived in Prairie Co AR.By 1880 he had moved to Hot Springs. Balchpersonally autographed the back in pencil, andthis was in Alice Wynne's 1865 album. Balch wasprobably traveling some sort of circuit to getmore business, or it could be that the photowas taken before 1870.

Notes She apparently wasn't the daughter of Hugh Rossand Nancy Nash who came to TN from NC. I willspeculate that the Margaret who was a daughter ofHugh Ross II who moved to TN from Anson Co NC inabout 1810 is the same person. She is said to havemarried an S.E. Winn, had a daughter named afterher who then married a Wynne whose first namestarted with a J. They lived in Forrest City ARand had several sons. Margaret Ross married herWinn in 1842 and died in 1845, which matches up

9

perfectly with this Margaret Ross. S.E. couldreally be J.E., and the name Wynne was spelledthree different ways back then.

Servant AR Title: Terry Baker, [email protected]:I now have some update info that will replace some of the data for these Wynnes at WorldConnect. Ihave Joel E. Wynne's will from St. Francis Co. AR. His obit in the Nashville Christian Advocate says hedied 1 Jan 1885. I think that's correct. His will was dated 13 Dec 1882, probated 14 Jan 1885 . In it hementions all his daughters, including Margaret, and most important, her husband Jesse W. Wynne. Thething that has always made people think her name was Ross is the way it looks on her tombstone. TheWynnes are all buried at Hillcrest Cem Holly Springs MS and are at Findagrave.com with beautifulphotos. Ross was Margaret's middle name and her mother's last name. I also found a bio of Jesse from1899 in Confederate Military History that says he was Isham Wynne's grandson. That means I wasright that Devereaux Wynne was Robert and Joel's uncle and guardian, not Robert's bilogical father.Robert was Jesse's biological father, and that's never been in dispute. I updated a lot of marriage anddeath records from the Shelby Co TN website Tom Leatherwood, Shelby County Register of Deeds sonow my website www.baker-brady.com is as up to date as I can make it. Jesse's obit says he died on 2May, so his tombstone is wrong on that. There were two papers in Memphis and both carried obits thatagreed, and one had a photo that matched both of mine, except Jesse was older in theirs. My thinking onthe Wynne tombstones is that they were put up sometime after the deaths and so they have a few errors.

Photos Wynne baby 1870-75I'm guessing this is a Wynne. Balch was a verymobile photographer, but was in east AR by 1870.There's a good chance this could be "Bob" who wasborn in 1869 and died in 1871. His face stronglyresembles the woman in the picture I believe tobe of Captain Jesse Wynne and his wife Margaret.

Since there were other children of Jesse andMargaret who died in infancy, this could be anyone of them. Dating the photo more precisely ishard to do since I believe that Balch the man whotook the picture was traveling between Memphisand Hot Springs during the 1870s, and not tiedto one location. Notes Her birth date is from my old notepad probablywritten by Sarah Pointer Stith or Sally Wynne. However the 1900 Shelby Co TN census gives a dateof June 1847. Her father married for the thirdtime on 01 Jun 1847 in Marshall Co MS, making methink the person who talked to the census takerin 1900 was confused.Pass Christian MS is said in her obit to be thefamily summer home.

Joel E. Wynne was definitely the father of JesseWynne's wife. Martha Pointer Wynne's obit provesthis by stating that the deceased was Mrs.(J.W.)Wynne's stepmother. The only thing I can't proveis that Margaret's mother was the d/o Hugh RossII of Hickman Co. TN.I now have Joel E. Wynne's will. In it he saysthat his daughter Margaret was married to JesseW. Wynne. That should end all argument.

But fewcitizens of our county, except those interested in lands, have the least conception of our township and itsrapid improvements. But a few years ago in the eighties-no one could have a crop, unless he was a walkingarsenal, for then it was a wilderness of cane, timber and wild beasts of the forest, with but few citizens, whose habitations were near the railfroad and on the river, but the first pioneers, were the best, mosthonest men to grow up in the country. There were the Wideners, Mahaffeys, and Pinkstons, most all ofwhom have passed over the river with but few of their offspring are here now. Within the last ten years, thousands of acres that the noonday sun had never shown upon for the density of the timber and cane aretoday vast fields of cotton and corn fields, producing annually from one to one and a half bales of cotton or40 to 80 bushels of corn per acre, and as to sweet and Irish potatoes, turnips, and pumpkins Griggstownship is a world beater, little is thought of it. In fact from the river to Blackfish, and from the Militaryroad to six miles south of Widener, is already in cultivation or is being cleared. At Widener we have threegood stores run by three good business men, Col.Withers, Maj.DeRossitt, and Esq.John Hall, all of whichare doing a big paying trade, both as to cash and credit. Maj.DeRossitt has one of the finest improvedMunger gin plants in Eastern Arkansas, also has about 300 or 400 acres of good land in cultivation at hisLake View home on Fishing Lake. Mr.Grahm of your city has a spendid farm of 250 or more acres, wellimproved, and run by Rev.Robert Walker. Capt.Wynne and Joe also have between two and three hundredacres under supervision of Prof.John Dean..Brandon and Baugh have five or six hundred acres incultivation with a fine gin plant. opened for business in 1886, with a capital stock of $30,000, and has proven a most profitable andsuccessful enterprise. When this bank opened its doors for business there was no banking house nearerthan Memphis or Helena, which cities are equidistant from this point. Capt.J.W.Wynne, then the seniormember of the large mecantile firm of Wynne, Dennis & Beck, of this city, and now the senior member ofthe firm of Wynne, Love & Co. of Memphis, Tennessee, was elected its first President, a position which heheld until he removed to Memphis. Capt.Wynne, son of Robert E. and Sarah Watkins Wynne, was bornnear Holly Springs, Mississippi, July 1,1839. With his parents he moved to Texas when quite young, andbegan his business career as a clerk in the store of James Flanagin, who was afterwards governor andUnited States senator from the state of Texas. Young Wynne was in charge of a branch store forMr.Flanigan when the Civil War began. In May 1861, he enlisted in Company B, Third Texas Cavalry, with which as a private he fought in the battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, and several other skirmishes.Promoted to first lieutenant in January 1862, he participated in the battles and skirmishes aroundElkhorn, Missouri, under General Price and then being promoted to Captain in June, 1862, hecommanded his company on the battlefields of Farmington, Iuka, and Corinth, Mississippi, as well asResaca, Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta, Georgia, and many other engagements, including those of Ross'brigade during Hood's campaign in Tennessee. He was wounded in the head at Wilson's Creek, Missouri, and in the arm at Resaca, Georgia, and at Jonesboro was captured but he and Adjutant Gregg, of theThird Texas, succeeded in taking their captors and turning them over to the Confederate guards. Justafter the war, Captain Wynne settled for one year in Crittendon county, Arkansas, from where he movedto Madison, Arkansas in 1867, and formed a partnership with Mr.Frank A. Cherry, under the firm nameof Cherry & Wynne; in 1868 the firm moved to Forrest City, where Mr.T.A. Hatcher was admitted underthe firm name Cherry, Wynne & Hatcher.

Col.John Gatling also has several large and valuable farms. The Forrest City Times' Art Souvenir-1905-Page 49:The Bank of Eastern Arkansas was established andopened for business in 1886, with a capital stock of $30,000, and has proven a most profitable andsuccessful enterprise. In May 1861, he enlisted in Company B, Third Texas Cavalry, with which as a private he fought in the battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, and several other skirmishes.

Promoted to first lieutenant in January 1862, he participated in the battles and skirmishes aroundElkhorn, Missouri, under General Price and then being promoted to Captain in June, 1862, hecommanded his company on the battlefields of Farmington, Iuka, and Corinth, Mississippi, as well asResaca, Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta, Georgia, and many other engagements, including those of Ross'brigade during Hood's campaign in Tennessee.

But few citizens of ourcounty, except those interested in lands, have the least conception of our township and its rapidimprovements. But a few years ago in the eighties-no one could have a crop, unless he was a walkingarsenal, for then it was a wilderness of cane, timber and wild beasts of the forest, with but few citizens, whose habitations were near the railroad and on the river, but the first pioneers, were the best, mosthonest men to grow up in the country. There were the Wideners, Mahaffeys, and Pinkstons, most all ofwhom have passed over the river with but few of their offspring are here now. Within the last ten years, thousands of acres that the noonday sun had never shown upon for the density of the timber and cane aretoday vast fields of cotton and corn fields, producing annually from one to one and a half bales of cotton or40 to 80 bushels of corn per acre, and as to sweet and Irish potatoes, turnips, and pumpkins Griggs

Mr.Graham of your city has a splendid farm of 250 or more acres, wellimproved, and run by Rev.Robert Walker. Capt.Wynne and Joe also have between two and three hundredacres under supervision of Prof.John Dean..Brandon and Baugh have five or six hundred acres incultivation with a fine gin plant.
