Well the biggest event for this month was the ANZAC Day services in Bedourie and Birdsville. With the help of the plane I was lucky enough to
attend the dawn service at Vaughan Johnson Lookout and the main parade in Birdsville.
Went up to Vaughan Johnson Lookout on Friday evening and was blown away by the effort that went into the preparations and the number of
people camped on site. I had a very social night in readiness for ANZAC Day. The day dawned beautifully, although cold and windy. First there was a
ceremony dedicating the Plinth. Diamantina were co-hosting the event with Boulia Shire and both the Boulia mayor and I had the privilege of
addressing the service. We were also joined by members of the crew of the HMAS Diamantina who did a sterling job under trying conditions.
While Im a terrible judge I thought 250-300 people attended, but heard guesses as much as 350.
Then the dawn service followed, which can only be described as moving, and I suggest all would agree. Even a heartless old bugger like me got
sentimental. The setting with the dawn starting in the background had to be seen to be believed. Again I had the honour of saying a few words.
Unfortunately I had to miss the main parade which I know was spectacular to say the least. The sight of 103 horses coming up that hill would have
been a grand sight which Im sure will be remembered for years to come. Im told that many ex horsemen came out of retirement for the day and
good on them for helping make the day.
I flew down to Birdsville in time for the ANZAC parade there. I had the honour of taking the salute along with Major Les Tobin of the Australian
Army. About 120 people attended or took part in the parade and service in which Major Tobin gave a great address. After which we had morning
tea, watched a PowerPoint presentation on Anzac day, told a lot of lies at the bar before adjourning to the hotel for 2up. It was good to see the
out of towners that come every year to Birdsville for ANZAC Day, from Rathdowney and Ballarat, many returned men from WW2 and Vietnam.
Thank you, you are always welcome.
All in all a truly terrific day all round and one in which Im sure all those who have served this great nation over the years would be proud of. I would
like to thank all who helped make the day, for all the time and effort they put into the day.
I would run out of paper thanking everyone that made the day what it was, but a few need a special mention. Colgate Stewart and his merry band
of helpers that made the Vaughan Johnson Lookout so special stand out. Also I would like to thank the crewmen from HMAS Diamantina for coming
all the way out. The caterers and bar staff did a sterling job. In Birdsville a special thanks must go out to Dave Hannan and Bev Morton for organising
the Birdsville parade with great support from Franziska Pessier and Tiffany Rigby. Also Major Les Tobin and Cpl Steven Morton from Enoggera who
led the Birdsville parade. Last but not least Richard Cooley who pulled the Vaughan Johnson Lookout show together.
With so many ups on the day there was unfortunately one downer. That was the disgraceful act of someone stealing the money from the bar till
at Vaughan Johnson Lookout, just leaves a sour taste in my mouth that someone could do something like this on this of all days. To think that this
could happen after so many did so much for the day beggars belief. This act along with the theft of the three charity boxes out of the Birdsville
Wirrarri Centre marks a new low in my community.
Prior to the weekend the CEO and I attended the LGAQ Financial Summit in Brisbane over 2 days. A very worthwhile event, and while I learnt a lot
it rams home just how much I dont know. A couple of heavy days. While we were in Brisbane we took the opportunity to meet with minister for
Main Roads, Mark Bailey. We lobbied him for further funding for the Bedourie-Boulia road, we had a very good meeting, and although no promises
were forthcoming I remain optimistic. We need this money for sustainability and ensure continuity of employment.
While I was away the shire had the opportunity to host Minister for communications, Malcolm Turnbull. He, along with Bruce Scott MP, visited
Birdsville for a listening tour. He was hosted by Deputy Mayor Garth Tully, who did a great job accompanying the minister. While here it was
pointed out the importance of getting the optic fibre link to Birdsville and Bedourie. While the minister came to Birdsville believing satellite was the
way to go, I think he left believing that maybe things are not quite so black and white. One can only hope. This was followed up by further lobbing by
RAPAD when he visited Longreach and also by Barcoo mayor on his way through Brisbane. Hopefully with all the lobbying he was convinced or
maybe get that sick of hearing about this wonderful project he will give us the money just to shut us up!
Well thats me for the month,
Geoff Morton

Message from the CEO
April will be remembered for unforgettable events celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli and the start of our ANZAC
tradition.
I was lucky to be one of the hundreds of people to be at the Vaughn Johnson Lookout to participate in the Dawn Service. What a unique location
for such an occasion. An unforgettable experience as the sun rose over the Georgina River floodplain.
Not to be outdone, the 10am service was unforgettable with 103 horses and riders winding their way up to the lookout where they formed a
spectacular guard of honour to the service. I doubt any other service in the country could claim to have 103 horses and riders representing the
rural areas from which many of the ANZACS enlisted.
A huge congratulations to those involved in ensuring that the day was a success. Firstly to Garth Tully who had the vision to a few years ago to hold
the celebrations on the lookout and who made endless phone calls mustering up 100 horses, to Trevor Stewart for his coordination of the site and
facilities that were provided for those who camped overnight and attended the day, Richard Cooley whose understanding of the Australian Defence
Forces and protocol resulted in the HMAS Diamantina crew being in attendance and collating the program, those who brought horses for themselves
and others to ride, many from hundreds of kilometres away, the riders who participated, particularly those who hadnt ridden for many years. The
Bedourie P&C did a fantastic job catering for 5 meals and the Bedourie Race Club had great stamina serving refreshments over 2 nights.
The attendance of the captain and company of the HMAS Diamantina was a special addition to the day.
At the Council meeting on the following Monday, they presented a framed Navy Ensign to the community at the Council meeting as a symbol of the
link between the Shire residents and the HMAS Diamantina.

Bush Boys Anzac Spirits Ride
by Kelsey Neilson 27 April 2015
The spirits of the Anzac boys rode with us on that day
100 years had come and gone since they went away
Wild young bush boys, innocent and free
They died in their hundreds on that bloodied beach for me
Bush boys and their horses, both bold and strong in rows
Formed a bond and fighting spirit that only a horsemen knows
Bravely, for us all, they fought in foreign lands
Reins and rifles carried in strong Australian hands
And so the shires call went out - a hundred horses to the rise
They came in every colour, every type and every size
From near and far, north and south the bushmens horses came
To pay tribute to and honour the sacred Anzac name
To a lonely rocky ridge just south of the Bellevue plain
The spirits of the Anzacs came home to ride again
And they rode with us to the top of the hill
Where the crowd awaited hushed and still
The last post played; the two flags waved held steady at half mast
And every heart was beating for the loss of heroes past
For ordinary men with extraordinary guts
Who fought and died for freedom, for peace, and for us
With our lives now so fortunate, so safe, so easy, so free
I think of the boy in the stinking trench and what he did for me
Of the broken hearted mother, the father, brother and sister
Of the lovers aching empty arms, who treasures the last time he kissed her
On a ridge just south of the Bellevue plain a hundred years on
The Anzacs spirits rode with me and my heart sang their song
Bout valour, pluck and courage - and nerve thatll never fail yu
Bout their love of a horse, of home, their mates, the bush and Australia
If I live to be a hundred - Im past halfway to that now
I know that I will never feel more privileged and proud
Than when the bush boys spirits came to ride with me
To honour the Anzacs hundred years and uphold their legacy

Diamantina Works/Road Report
I would like to say what a month April was, with Angle flight Outback Trailblazers entertaining in Birdsville and Bedourie, what a fun time had by
all and I must commend them on the groups driving abilities, there were no incidents or accidents on our roads, well done to the organizers for a
well put together event.
Anzac Day! What a great weekend at the Vaughan Johnson Lookout, I personally want to thank everyone for all the hard work that was put into
setting up the week prior. Specifically I would like to thank:
All the DSC Council staff that went above and beyond, well done;
Jan Norton for the superb photographs;
Brent Krause for setting up water at short notice;
Jim Smith picking up gear and delivering it from Mount Isa;
Bedourie P&C for a great job catering for the weekend, very hard when youre not too sure of the numbers;
Bedourie Race club for doing the bar and after all the hard work was over some low life stole the till - hope they get whats coming
to them;
Grant Jansen for the army equipment that he had on show; and
Last but not least everyone that rode and brought horses a big well done.
The Betoota bypass pave and seal will commence on the 19th of May, it will be around 4.1km. Work is being done on the Cordillo access road
while the crews are waiting to start at Betoota. The Birdsville streetscape has commenced again after taking a back seat for the Anzac day
setups. Town crews have had some new projects on the go, both in Birdsville and Bedourie and have had training in weed spraying so we can do
our own spraying in the Shire.

Proud to be Australian
To everyone who witnessed ANZAC Day at Vaughan Johnson Lookout I am sure they would have been moved by it all. From the Dawn service
with the Sailors standing proudly and the riderless horse there representing the fallen men and women that have made the ultimate sacrifice as
the sun slowly rose in the east.
The 10am service was also very special when 103 horsemen, women and children proudly mounted on their horses gathered on the claypan then
formed a grand procession to parade up to the top of the Lookout.
It was not without some excitement as the morning was a little chilly and the horses feeling a bit fresh. The Legend Vaughan Johnson put claim to
a bit of land on the claypan as he got dusted off a Glengyle Horse. Now it may be only a rumour but the word is we may have to rename
Vaughan Johnson Lookout to Look out Vaughan Johnson if he keeps riding these station horses.
Following the 10am service and laying of the wreaths the two-up games got going and music played into the sunset.
To Garth and Kathy Tully, Trevor Stewart, P&C and all their helpers, I think they did a terrific job and they made everyone proud to be
Australian.
Garth Tully did a great job also promoting this event not once but twice on the radio on Macca two Sundays in a row. Listening to Maccas
comments he loved the voice of a real Australian Bushman. You may have a new career path well done mate.

Anzac Day- Birdsville.
Betoota Race Club
Anzac Day was commemorated with a dawn service and a mid morning service. The Birdsville Bakery hosted the traditional Gunfire breakfast
and it was pleasing to see locals as well as tourists taking part in this. Many thanks go to Teresa and Dusty.
After the Gunfire breakfast everyone proceeded to Anzac Park where the traditional dawn service was held. Approximately 40 people
attended this service.
At 10am everyone met at the hotel in preparation for the Anzac Day march. At 10.30am everyone proceeded to Anzac Park. Major Les Tobin
from Gallipoli Barracks Enoggera along with the Mayor, Geoff Morton, took the salute. David Hannan and Tiffany Rigby had organised the
service and special thanks go them for the effort they put into the day.
After the service everyone proceeded to the hall where morning tea was served by the Betoota Race club Inc. A power point display was
played throughout the morning and thanks go to Franziska Pessier for a great display. The water diviner was screened and approximately a
dozen people sat and watched it. Many thanks must go to the Diamantina Shire Council for giving the club the opportunity to host the morning
tea. Funds raised from the morning will help offset the cost of the ambulance at race time. Many thanks to all who helped on the day your
support is very much appreciated.

NAVAL FLAGS NEW HOME IN BOARD ROOM
With sailors from the HMAS Diamantina attending the joint Diamantina and Boulia Shires 100th Anniversary of ANZAC Day commemoration
services that were held at the Vaughan Johnston Lookout on the ANZAC Day an Australian Naval White Ensign (flag) was presented to Council.
The Commanding Officer of HMAS Diamantina LCMD Iain Hutchins presented the Australian White Ensign (AWE) flag, being the flag under which
all of the Royal Australian Navy ships are commissioned, to the Mayor of The Diamantina Shire Council Cr Geoff Morton at the Council April
monthly meeting.
LCMD Hutchins said it was a privilege and an honour to present the flag on behalf of not only the ships crew who attended the ANZAC Day
commemorative services, but from the whole crew, and to be able to present the flag to Council as a symbol of the bond between the ships
company and the community of the Diamantina shire was his greatest privilege as the Commanding Officer of the Ship.
The Mayor Cr Geoff Morton said that with the Ship having been granted the Freedom of the Shire in 2010, and now with representatives of the
Ship attending this historic of ANZAC Day, that the relationship between the ship and the shire should become even closer and that visits by both
parties should become more frequent.
Cr Morton assured LCMD Hutchins that the Flag would feature most prominently in the Council board room and hold pride and place within the
shire.
LCMD Hutchins commented on the sailors visits to the school where the children delighted in seeing the sailors in their uniform and asked many
questions of the men and the ship.
With the impending construction of the 100th Anniversary of the World War 1 memorial walls there may be the opportunity for members of the
HMAS Diamantina to visits the shire again in 2015 and attend the unveiling of the walls in each town which would be wonderful thing for the shire
and its people.
LCMD Hutchins also spoke of how the crew had unanimously agreed to support a charity as part of the ANZAC Day visits and form this initiative
a fitness challenge was developed.
It was identified that it was 2087 kilometres from Sydney to the shore and during the next three months the crew ran, rowed and jumped their
way to a total distance of 5300 klms. In doing this challenge the crew raised $3407.00 for the Qld Royal Flying Doctor Service which is money that
will bring quality support to an organisation that is very much needed in the far remote regions of our nation.

Diamantina Shire Police News
Hey All,
The events season is slowly approaching. I have just returned from working up in Boulia for their first Rodeo and Races. We had a couple of Drink
Drivers including one that went .234% which was one of the highest recorded in the state for the Easter weekend.
I want to remind everyone that with the approaching tourist season, there will be increased police presence in the area. This includes the traffic branch
who are not known for their compassion. Loss of your license when living out here is extremely crippling but its still better than losing your life or
someone elses.
No offences to report in the Bedourie Division.
The cardio Gym Gear has been ordered and should arrive within the coming weeks. In preparation for this, I will be distributing a PAR-Q health
questionnaire. This is for liability reasons and will need to be completed prior to being able to use the facilities or participate in an exercise programs.
The purpose of the PAR-Q is to establish whether there are any conditions that prevent you from engaging in exercise (ie- Heart Conditions, Back
Problems etc). If you do have any issues, it is just a matter of having a free referral to see Josh (The Exercise Physiologist) next time he visits at the
clinic. Josh will be able to provide you with a program that will strengthen and improve without the risk or long term damage. Josh will be visiting next
on the 29th of April. Please call the clinic on 47461226 if you need an appointment.
The cooler weather should also make it a bit more comfortable for camping and fishing. Remember that the fishing comp is still running until the end
of the year. Entry can be paid at the roadhouse. Come and see me if you are unsure of the rules.
QGAP is still open every afternoon from 12:00pm until 3:30pm or call if you need an appointment outside these hours. See you all around the town.
