new history, this year we have received
1910 submissions from 115 countries, that
is two third of the world is with us. This is
more than overwhelming response.
DESHAM, a non-governmental organization

bringing this film festival to Kolkata.
This year film festival will be inaugurated
by Mr. Shovan Chatterjee, Mayor, Kolkata

place at historic Star Theatre.
The organizing committee have received
1910 films from 115 countries. This year
India tops the list with 307 films, however
participation from the third world countries
is need to be mentioned, as Iran is the
second largest contributor, 218 films came
from this country, USA sent 150 films. Italy
and Spain contributed 83 films each. So

face in such a way that it will create
awareness among all. The success of First

from the mistakes too.
We are all set for the 2nd Kolkata

2nd December with one more day and the
festival will come to an end on 4th
December 2016. Our target is to make this

we are going to take lot of initiatives, we
solicit your support. This year we are trying
to organize more talk shows, seminars and
interactions too.

SIROCCOCountry : India
This film has bagged Green Oscar in a Global
Category, popularly known as the Panda Awards
and has been viewed in over 78 countries.
There are only 125 Kakapo parrots left on planet Earth today. So few, that all of them have been individually named. But
one name among these is a world famous celebrity called Sirocco. A parrot so popular, that the government of New
Zealand gave him a job. Sirocco - How a Dud Became a Stud, is the delightful rags-to-riches story of a bird that shot to
superstardom.
Sirocco is the only bird in the world with a Government Job. The film unfolds the story of a parrot catapulted, by a strange
chain of events, to phenomenal fame and recognition. Today this bizarre New Zealand bird has his own PR team that
manages his public image. He has a social media following (almost two hundred thousand) that has surpassed that of
many human celebrities. He even gets his own VIP seat in the airplane that flies him on official tours. And this is
unforgettable story of his life.
Ashwika Kapur is from our own city Kolkata. She is a Wildlife & Natural History Filmmaker and is India's youngest and only woman to win the Green Oscar in a Global Category. Ashwika also
has achieved worldwide recognition as a filmmaker for being selected at America's biggest Nature Film Awards - The Grand Teton Awards at the prestigious Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival.
Last year, Ashwika also received Save the Tiger Award at our 1st Kolkata International Wildlife and Environmental Film Festival.

The concept of blasphemy against the Gods has a complex history in Hinduism. However,
there are several occasions where religion becomes the last resort to enforce acceptable
behaviour or code of conduct. These actions are condoned in Hinduism and have a huge
impact on people and society.
Traditionally, animals have always been considered sacred in the Hindu culture. Some
animals have even been symbolically worshipped and are portrayed as the 'vahana' or
vehicles of gods and goddesses. The mighty lord Shiva rides a Bull, Lord Ganesh ride a
mouse and Goddess Durga rides a tiger. Even though tigers are worshipped in India, there
is still a lack of awareness about their decreasing numbers among the people.
Using these religious connotations, this film presents a sardonic take on the issue of
“Save the Tiger”.

Every Drop Counts...Runtime : 1 minute 15 seconds
Country : India
Directed by : Dhimant Vyas
For most of us living in cities with dependable amenities, drought is
something we see on TV or read on newspapers. Even if not for all the 24
hours, water does come to our houses and taps. This probably gives us an
emotional distance from the people, animals, birds and landscapes affected
by a drought. Because of this, we fail to understand that our actions have an
impact too! This film is an attempt to build that bridge. It tells the two sides
of a story, on one screen. It gives the full picture.

eight decades. The city's biggest reservoir reached technically 0%
of its volume capacity, leaving thousands without water supply.
The water company was forced to drain water from the reservoir
“dead volume”; a reserve that is below the level of the water locks and had never been used before. The
water quality is questionable due the amount of sediments and mud. The state government had already
been warned since 2004 that the collapse was imminent and almost nothing was made to mitigate it.

ACROSS ANTARCTICARuntime : 30 minutes
Country : France
Directed by : Stéphanie Gicquel
: 2045 km, 74 days, -50°C. From
November 14, 2014 to January 27,
2015, Stéphanie Gicquel (French
woman) skied across Antarctica
through the South Pole, with two
other polar explorers, including her
husband Jérémie. An expedition she
had imagined, planned and prepared
for three years. This is notably the
longest ski expedition for a woman in
Antarctica without kiting (Sources:
G u i n n e s s W o r l d R e c o r d s ,
ExplorersWeb, AdventureStats,
Adventure Network International). The film is an invitation to discover Antarctica through the
eyes and feelings of Stéphanie. It highlights some of the moments she experienced during this
long expedition - when she waited at Union Glacier base camp, started the expedition on the
coast at the same place where the mountaineer Reinhold Messner began his own kite-ski
expedition across Antarctica in 1989, when she skied up and reached the South Pole on
Christmas eve and arrived on the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf floating on the Weddell Sea after
74 days of extreme effort.
This 30 minute film is not only about adventure. It is mainly about the meaning of things, fear,
freedom, fulfillment, and boldness. An invitation for everyone to live intensely, without fear
nor regret. This film also shows the life of a couple whose strength is tested under extreme
conditions. A testimony of being one with the Antarctic landmass - similar as a frozen ocean
located 3,000 meters high, with ice waves shaped by the wind. A sanctuary where nature is so
powerful and strong against explorers who dare to come, but at the same time so fragile.

UNCHAINEDRuntime : 1 hour 20 minutes
Country : United Kingdom
Directed by : Alex C Rivera
“Unchained” follows the work of Carol Buckley
(Elephant Aid International (EAI)) and her team, to
enhance captive elephant welfare in Nepal, showing by
gentle persuasion and example that there is a 'better
way' to treat elephants in human captivity. Carol's is a
phased, pragmatic approach to change attitudes;
encouraging co-operation, not a confrontation between
Nepalese elephant handlers (mahouts) and their
'essential' elephant assets, upon which the mahouts rely
to sustain themselves in an environment bereft of options.
Carol promotes co-operation between man and elephant by 'positive reinforcement,' not dominance
and cruelty – indeed a 'better way.'
As we should all 'know,' working in co-operation will always yield a better longer-term result for all
parties concerned, engendering mutual respect and loyalty.
On the other hand, dominance, intimidation, threats and violence yields 'results' of a different kind -
breeding contempt, duress, leading ultimately to the mental and physical destruction of the abused
party. The human abuser can also become conflicted with shame and a need for atonement, but with
some sadly lacking any such compassion of course.
Now imagine a young elephant, taken into a life of captivity, chained so its movements are restricted
to the point where the elephant's limbs can become permanently malformed, scarred, injured and
infected. This same elephant's will is drained from repetitive beatings with bars, sticks and metal
'bull hooks' to subjugate the elephant into obedience. Sometimes an abused elephant's eye is hit
and maimed, leading to blindness for life.
All this brutal cruelty and depravity to 'train' an elephant for a potential 60 year life expectancy
subject to man's behest – to provide elephant riding safaris perhaps, or even circus performances as
human 'entertainment,' the subject elephant's back, limbs, senses bombarded and abused daily.
Then, the elephant chained and denied even the temporary respite of freedom of movement.
“Unchained,” tells the story, as Carol and her dedicated team make progress in Nepal to relieve the
captive elephant's immediate suffering one case at a time, pioneering a more humane connection
between man and elephant, shifting the emphasis and acknowledgement towards elephant welfare
and dignified treatment – a noble pursuit that these truly magnificent, intelligent 'gentle giants'
undoubtedly deserve.
“Unchained” needs to be seen. Its message, that through pragmatism and persistence, there is hope
that 'captive' elephants will gain improved respect and welfare. Ultimately, there will be a transition
away from abusive elephant training for 'entertainment,' burdening 'tourists' on their spines, to an
'educated' tourist spectacle of herds of unchained 'captive' elephants to admire without intrusion;
the elephants' mahouts able to look on with pride, dignity and we hope at long last, a deeply felt
mutual respect – a potential atonement indeed.

Thanks to recent discoveries, and in the company of François Sarano, oceanographer and

Wild Seas of Ireland - Ireland's Ocean PredatorsRuntime : 50 minutes
Country : Ireland
Directed by : Ken O'Sullivan
SynopsisThere are 27,000 common dolphins living in Irish waters and half the European population of
bottlenose dolphins, and yet we still have very limited knowledge of important their diets and breeding
habits.
Scientists Dr. Joanne O'Brien and Dr. Simon Berrow unveil the secrets of dolphin social groups and
look at the welfare of dolphins in Irish waters. Simon investigates what may be causing dead dolphins
to wash up at an alarming rate on our Atlantic shores.
Dusty is a solitary bottlenose dolphin that has been living off the Clare coast for ten years. In the
summer of 2013, she made global headlines when she attacked several swimmers, causing serious
injury. We meet people who have built their lives around developing a relationship with Dusty and hear
from Dr. Simon Berrow what exactly might be going on with these interactions and what the
consequences may be.
With almost forty species of sharks and thirty species of rays, the seas around Ireland have always
abounded with these creatures.
Porbeagle sharks, close relatives of the great white, have been decimated in recent decades in Irish
and North Atlantic waters.
We follow the conservation efforts of Dr. Edward Farrell in placing satellite tags on porbeagle sharks
off Donegal and look at the global decimation of sharks, scientists estimate that 100 MILLION sharks
are being killed annually, mostly to use their fins in shark fin soup, and human joint remedies.
“The Bitter Truth” (Dal losing the battle between localsand authorities)Runtime : 28 minutes 19 seconds
Country : India
Directed by : Er. Abdul Rashid
SynopsisDal the heart of Srinagar city and of Kashmir's tourism per se.
From a majestic vastness of tens of kilometers is the ancient
time to 25 km's in the recent past and reduced to a meager 11 km's today, Dal is asking for all the attention that is
possible. It is a heritage that is being lost to pollution and greed.
The Bitter truth is a film that looks at the plight of the Dal from a different point of view. In spite of talking of its
infestations the film looks at the faulty policies and the ongoing unsorted battle between the Dal dwellers and the
authorities. The result is that the attention that Dal should be receiving is being diverted to sort issues of different
stakeholders. And the sufferer is the lake. A lot of funding has been diverted towards the protection and conservation of
the lake but the outcome does not show on any level.
The lake is falling prey to greedy people, farming, sewage and weeds. The film is a responsible attempt to bring forth the
problems that the lake is facing and to generate awareness about the lake. The film tackles the faulty policies that are
being used for the conservation but are ending up hurting the lake in the process.
Rehabilitation of the Dal dwellers is the top priority policy but it's weaknesses is making the dwellers to choose to come
back to the lake. It seems more of wastage of time and money while Dal is silently moving towards a silent death.
While looking at the issue you cannot decide whose side to be on? The dwellers or the authorities! What we are forgetting
though is that the main protagonist- The Dal- is missing from the action.

Nature Reclaims the BorderRuntime : 43 minutes 40 seconds
Country : Germany
Directed by : Uwe Müller
SynopsisFor decades, barbed wire divided Germany. It separated two political systems,
families and friends and made border crossings almost impossible.
In the shadow of the restricted zone, which no-one was permitted to enter, a refuge
developed for threatened plants and animals. Rarities such as the black stork, otter,
Wanstschrecke, which is a large grasshopper, and the whinchat have found ideal
living conditions here in the marshy
land, the moors, pioneer woodlands
and sparse grasslands of Germany's
Green Belt. In excess of 5,000
different animal and plant species live
in this unique habitat; more than 600
of them are critically endangered.
Today, this former 'no-man's land' is
Germany's longest wildlife corridor –
and a part of the Europe's Green Belt.
The film reveals the ways and paths
wild cats, sea eagles, beavers and
whinchats used to use and how they
claim the former border strip for their
own.
Breathtaking wildlife observations and
thoughtful observations of
contemporary witnesses and
conservationists form a fascinating
bond of stories and history.

SynopsisThe Western Ghats in India is one of
important biodiversity hotspot of the world,
the story is based in the part of the Ghats adjoining Western state of Maharashtra in year 2015,
covering the period from end May to October which is period of the Monsoon in India and the
effect the El- Nino had on the weather condition and life in the Ghats.
Story is based around the smallest Kingfishers of Asia that lives in these parts of the Ghats called
the Oriental Dwarf kingfisher. This bird is super adaptable when it comes to prey and feeds on
anything it can catch including fish. Monsoon is the breeding season for this bird and arrival of
the monsoon triggers the breeding for them. The Oriental dwarf builds the nest and starts its
breeding, however relent-less part of the Monsoon floods its nest and causes failure of the brood.
Around the Oriental Dwarf kingfishers, other 2 kingfishers share this habitat and nest during
Monsoons they are Blue eared kingfisher and the common kingfisher, which are primarily fish
eaters. The Monsoon rains disappear due to the ongoing El-Nino effect from our part of the Ghats,
drying up most of the running streams which provide regular food to the kingfishers, Oriental
Dwarf kingfishers normally will raise 2 broods in a season but disappearance of the rains it doesn't
undertake the next cycle. There does exist a constant danger from the predators to these
kingfishers. The Oriental Dwarf kingfisher waits for the monsoon to return, unless that happens it
won't breed again that season.
The Monsoons return to the Ghats, Oriental dwarf kingfisher builds a new nest and breeds. It's
finally able to raise a brood this season, the Monsoons defeated it once but the kingfisher fought
hard to be successful, the practice of raising 2 broods a season is more like an insurance policy
for these birds as it gives them a window from June to October and they can time the breeding
accordingly, adapting to the changing weather patterns.
The super adaptability of the Oriental Dwarf kingfisher is the key to its survival and also to its
better success than any other kingfishers around these Ghats.

For most of us living in cities with dependable amenities,
drought is something we see on TV or read on
newspapers. Even if not for all the 24 hours, water does
come to our houses and taps. This probably gives us an
emotional distance from the people, animals, birds and
landscapes affected by a drought. Because of this, we fail
to understand that our actions have an impact too! This
film is an attempt to build that bridge. It tells the two
sides of a story, on one screen. It gives the full picture.
The movie 'We Fly Again' tells the unwritten story of the
birds we cohabit with, the crows. Although they live in
very big groups near the metropolis and the increase the
risks of spreading an entire list of epidemics among the
human population, since they feed from the cesspools
and they rest in towns during the night fall, the birds are
harmless and they love people.
The Guadalupe dam watershed, located at the northeast
of Mexico City, is a region of great biodiversity. It's a
source of oxygen, drinking water, wood, food, medicinal
plants and cultural elements for the inhabitants of the
Valleys of Mexico and Toluca. While an important home
for the Otomi ́ethnic group, the watershed also shelters a
peculiar species: the mountain axolotl (Ambystoma
altamirani), a micro-endemic, endangered amphibian,
unique in the world.
Even in the middle of a city there is so much to explore
that is worth to stop and contemplate.
Many beings in constant motion with an infinite range of
textures, shapes and colors.
This is a closely look at some fantastic beings with whom
we live every day and many times we pass unnoticed.
A wildlife short, taking a look into the other side of lion
hunting and discussing the role it plays in the
conservation of the species in South Africa.

The state of Rajasthan is one of the driest
ecologies in the world, known for acute water
shortages and sparse landscapes.
Set broadly in the state's Aravali hill ranges-
amidst semi-arid jungles, rocky outcrops and
mesmerizing cultural and architectural heritage,
the film showcases life in the region- its
biodiversity including animals and birds that are
truly wild in their essence, as well as those that
co-exist with people; and the change that
ushers in as one season gradually gives way to
the next.
The time frame being the pre-monsoons- a brief
period between the extreme summer and the
wet season, each animal behaves differently.
Based on their nature and adaptability, for some it is a matter of survival, others through wit and human perception remain
largely unaffected, a few benefit owing to their position in the food chain and yet others seem to flutter and revel
instinctively in a quest to attract the other sex of their species.
Both man and beast seem to await the end of the year's dry spell; and then the Monsoon rains finally descend, transforming
everything around it- playing their part in the cyclic rotation of seasons that has been going on since time immemorial.
Chopo, a city man, has been searching for a
legacy buried under an old ranch. He builds
apachetas as a reminder of his search. Now,
cut off from all modern life, he has found a
comfortable routine that is about to end when
he gets what he sough.
Apacheta is the portrait of a man who is on a
place that does not belong, in the middle of a
tangible and materialistic search, but
eventually finds quite the opposite; a new
home, a new routine or even himself.
Production note:
Apacheta is in South América a pile of stones
made by andean people on the mountains
mainly as part of a ritual honoring the earth
since pre hispanic times and as a mark of his
pass by lone and far roads of this world. The
production was shot in a remote and part of
Perú, where the only access possible is by
walking for 5 hours through the mountains. In
real life the actor, Roberto Barrenechea,
decided to move out from the city 30 years
ago to live in the lonely mountain house that
appears in the film to live as a breeder.

MTJP | Redwood is the culmination of several weeks
spent exploring Redwood National and State Parks.
Redwood National and State Parks in Northern
California are home to the tallest trees in the world,
the mighty Redwood, which can reach staggering
heights of over 360ft and weigh more than 500 tons.
These parks feature magical forests, miles of
spectacular beaches, stunning overlooks, and the
largest herd of Roosevelt elk on the planet. This short
film was shot entirely in 4K.
This film is the culmination of nearly a
month spent filming in spectacular
Jackson Hole Valley and the foothills of
the Teton Range. Encompassing nearly
500 square miles, Grand Teton National
Park boasts an awe-inspiring array of
pristine wilderness, glacial lakes, winding
rivers, diverse wildlife, and the
magnificent Teton Range. Journey with us
as we explore a land dominated by
towering peaks, apex predators, and
majestic beauty. This is Grand Teton.
A special look at the patagonian wildlife.
What is the ocean
saying if we could hear
its voice? This is the
question that brought
me from Florida to live
with the Bajau in
Indonesia. As a
filmmaker, I wanted to
share the life of people
who live intimately with
the sea.
The Bajau are a sea
nomadic group who
have lived on the ocean
for centuries. I wanted
to see the ocean through their eyes and hear the ocean's voice.
"The Call from the Sea" addresses the future of our oceans and what we
are leaving behind. It is a personal and poetic story about life as a Bajau
and how our actions affect their world, ten thousand miles away.

PLASTIC GARBAGE-SCOURGE OF THE SEASRuntime : 4 minutes 38 seconds
Country : United Kingdom
Directed by : Giacomo Mantovani
Award winning filmmaker
Giacomo Mantovani talks about
a massive issue worldwide that
the majority of the people is not
considering: the huge amount of
plastic waste in the
environment. The problem is
that plastic is made to last, and
indeed it last for a very long
time. Plastic breaks in many
tiny pieces, but it never
disappear completely from the water. All of this little pieces keep breaking until
they become so small that is no more possible to see them, but they are still there,
contaminating the water.Fishes, sea creatures and seabirds, they all eat this toxic materials, and eventually
people eat them. So this is not safe for the creatures, this is not safe for us, this is
not good for the environment, where plastic garbage increases the temperature of
the seas and oceans, and this consequently have a strong impact to the global
climate change. Life in the seas does still exist, but it's in real danger because of
the unmerciful fishing and because of the massive amount of pollution in the water.
Fishes eat this stuff and it's very sad, as they deserve a better life as our children
do. The entire world deserve to be in a better condition, and because we are
responsible for this, we are the only solution. We need to do something about it
now, we can't wait no more.We really owe this to ourselves, we owe it to the next generations, to all the living
creatures of this world and to this wonderful planet.
