PHENOMENOLOGY ILLUSTRATED

WHO’S WHO?

135 - 140

FOREWORDJUST BEFORE YOU GET STUCK IN...

“In its most basic form, phenomenology attempts to create conditions for the objective study of topics usually regarded as subjective: consciousness and the content of conscious experiences such as judgments, images, perceptions, and emotions.”

This book contains a selection of work produced by illustrators who inspire me with their images. Images are only half the story when it comes to my own inspiration, and more often than not, a quote is a way more powerful form of inspiration. The two together create something I wish I could have flicked through in first year, because it has taken me a very long time to realise that freelance illustration is something I really feel passionate about, and want to make a serious go of.

There is inspiration everywhere, wether it be books, print work, on screen, on a wall, a sticker way up high or old scribbles buried under miles of mess. I found that to really benefit from inspiration, I have to feel certain of what I’m doing.

“THE FIRST AIM OF PHENOMENOLOGY IS TO REAWAKEN A SENSE OF WONDER ABOUT ONE’S ENVIRONMENT.” - OBEY GIANT

I really hope this book gives a clear sense of where I’m coming from and where I’m headed.

Enjoy!

“It’s important to study other artists and absorb every piece of art that you love, and to BE influenced by it, but simultaneously, because all art is so personal, you need to be able to let go and trust yourself to do your own thing, no matter how good or shitty it may be, as long as it’s your own.”

“I USED TO ONLY WANT TO BE THOUGHT OF AS AN ILLUSTRATOR BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE I KNEW THAT CALLED THEMSELVES ARTISTS WERE FULL OF BALONEY. I GUESS I FEEL LIKE IF I’M WORKING ON COMMERCIAL STUFF THEN I’M WORKING AS AN ILLUSTRATOR AND IF I’M SITTING DOWN TO PAINT OR DRAW JUST FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING SOMETHING THEN I’M WORKING AS AN ARTIST. GODMACHINE

“Godmachine was born in Cardiff, South Wales, it was a difficult birth; his parents were in London at the time. He grew up on a steady diet of nothing, 2000AD comics and Santa Cruz skateboards. His art is born of Jim Philips, raised by Simon Bisley and adopted by his everyday influences; film, literature and music. He uses a wacom, photoshop and coffee to achieve his detailed images that have made quite an impact on band merch, skateboards and clothing companies today.”

DREW MILLWARD

“Drew Millward has been illustrating characters, posters and merchandise for close to 5 years. His career is flourishing, and much of this is as a result of his use of low-key online marketing, allowing his work to be seen by a mass audience at zero cost. He prefers to assume that his success is somehow accidental. What started out as drawing posters for friends and bands around Leeds, has led Drew to international commissions, with prints selling around the world to an ever growing army of fans. The reputation he has earned within music circles is particularly impressive.”

HYDRO74

“Complexity and a fluid organic approach is what is highly valued in each and every piece. A Illustration to me is something that tells a story with out words needed. It builds a bond with the viewer who will either get it, or find it horrible, yet, the interaction is what is desired when doing a piece. Some Illustrations are trend based iconic structures meant to embrace the masses to encourage sales, while others are explorations turned to symbolic ideas on paper or fabric. Illustration is something I find deep meaning in.”

ALEX PARDEE

“Alex Pardee’s unique style is one conceived through watching years of horror movies, writing graffiti, and listening to gangster rap. His work best represents that of a vibrant undead circus sideshow. Final pieces are often brought to life by translating random shapes and colors into signs of torment and absurdity. By juxtaposing these two conflicting moods, Alex makes his works more personal to his viewers, forcing them to project their own feelings and emotions onto each character in his twisted universe.”

MR. GAUKY

“I was born in Yorkshire and at the naive age of 4, I was taken on a day trip to dales by my parents. Its still unknown whether they got distracted by the lush surroundings and completely forgot about me or their plan was to abandon me and leave me to fend for myself. I stumbled around the dales aimlessly for what seemed like days, until I came across a tribe of very hairy creatures called Slouches, they took an instant shining to me and took me in as one of their own. They taught me the ways of the dales and introduced me to art, I developed these skills and spent most of my days painting their portraits. Many years passed by and now I draw, paint, digitize, print and sculpt a powerful gang of misfits and creatures for myself and others.”

SHEPARD FAIREY

“The OBEY sticker campaign can be explained as an experiment in Phenomenology. Heidegger describes Phenomenology as “the process of letting things manifest themselves.” Phenomenology attempts to enable people to see clearly something that is right before their eyes but obscured; things that are so taken for granted that they are muted by abstract observation.”

EROSIE

“Jeroen Erosie’s current work explores the subversion of different genres, and the loss of its intrinsic values. Considering the ‘play’ between advertising, art, graphic design, graffiti and illustration in an ongoing search for artistic freedom. Observing a culture, wherein successful communication alludes to supremacy, and these dislocated modes of communication embody our post-modern obsession with visual language and image in general.”

SPZERO76

‘SP Zero76’ is a freelance illustrator, originally from the North East, but he has spent the majority of his time in Bristol ever since moving to the city to do his degree in Illustration at UWE, way back in 1996.During his early years as an artist he had his first exhibition at ‘Eat The Beat’ records in the late 90’s and featured in the Bristol street art scene, alongside big names, exhibiting his art in group shows at the rebuilt ‘Cube’ cinema. It was at this time that he started using the Pseudonym “SPZero76” (Solo Productions Zero Talent since 1976). With a real name like Keith, having a pseudonym seemed like the only option. I mean, ‘Keith’ is hardly a name you’d associate with fresh urban art, is it? Ha!”

MICROBO

“A microbe is any living organism that spends its life at a size too tiny to be seen with the naked eye. By definition, microbes are invisible without the aid of a microscope, so the challenge to find new ones is great. The difficulty is compounded when one does look under the microscope to see two apparently similar bacteria which later prove to be not at all similar. Microbes or Microrganisms include fungi, protists and bacteria, but non virus which are generally classified as non-living.”

WOMEN158

“My artwork takes its inspiration from life, and the social, cultural and political effects upon it. I try to give the protagonist in my pieces a back-story and work it into the imagery using symbols and familiar visual signs, this allows the viewer to formulate their own story to the piece and interact with it. I try to draw on a well of information and resources, from ancient history, typography, fashion, myths, music, overheard conversations, my own thoughts, fears, insecurities, hopes, dreams, aspirations, and try to pull them together into a pleasing visual piece, that is full of clues to its purpose, but open to interpretation.”
