3. Site/Environmental Analyses

The major challenge associated with the site design is to maintain and enhance the characteristics of the existing surrounding context.

The topography has identified the direction of a little valley surrounded by gentle

slopes and woods. To minimise changes in existing terrain and removal of trees in the interest of preserving the natural environment, the proposal has then been organised along a perceptual axis, leading from the main road system and the access points to the wooden background. To underline this concept a rectilinear pond, fed by a water fall flowing from the top of the building along the facade, has been proposed interpreting in a modern key the role plaid by water in the Baroque Italian and French gardens.

The axis will be physically created by pedestrian and vehicular rectilinear accesses.

Internal vehicular roads serving the building ensure a proper interface with the various means of transportation. Parking facilities have been proposed off the main vehicular access. Vehicular traffic will reach the underground level of the building not to interfere with the perceptual view of visitors walking along running water, under the shade of ornamental trees. The free flowing logical paths of vehicular and pedestrian circulation are connecting new and existing features, taking into consideration access and interface with the various means of transportation. External areas are also provided for exhibitions and visitors facilities and comfort.

The provided external design is in harmony with the neighboring Provincial Museum

and the future Korean music performance hall in terms of scale and layout.

4. Architectural Design Concept

The triangular plan of the Nam June Paik Museum is developing on three levels above ground and a level underground.

The Ground floor will accommodate the Main visitors hall, the Lounge café and

Museum shop, the Administration, the Special Project Gallery and the Changing Exhibition. The First floor will accommodate the Artist Space and Studio and the Permanent

exhibition, occupying also the Second floor . The Underground floor will accommodate all required storage areas (directly served

by a vehicular road), Media Lab & Resources (with direct access to the stair leading to the library on the Ground floor), the multipurpose hall, services and mechanical rooms. The underground level will also accommodate the future expansions in terms of storage, services, Main Auditorium and exhibition areas.

Projected expansion has been carefully studied as shown on the following diagram.

The Main Auditorium, to be built during Phase 1, has been centrally located on the underground floor to be easily accessible from the main Lobby.

On the same level enough space has been allocated for the expansion of Exhibition

Area (Phase 1 and Phase 2), extending outside the main building foundation and then possibly illuminated by roof skylights emerging on the garden.

All Storage, Mechanical & Electrical requested expansions have been allocated

underground, in the proximity of the service internal road, so as to be properly served without perceptually interfering with the front garden of the museum.

The Media Art Research & Education and the Artists’ Dormitories will occupy a

volume close to the main vehicular access, to serve as future land mark signalling the presence of the Museum and to be easily accessible from the main road. 5. Exhibition

In order to express the uniqueness and creative spirit of Nam June Paik the proposed design is based on very simple architectural forms perceivable from the access.

Four main pillars, shaped as antique Roman exedras, serving as external exhibition

platforms, bear interactive removable visual electronic panels, where different images may be shown to suit the events and the inspiration of the moment. These panels serve as a repository for the Artist's creative oeuvre, promoting at the same time the Province of Kyonggi as an international centre of culture and arts.

Visitors flow has been carefully organised from the main Lobby on three levels. Yet a

great attention has been paid to the perception of the internal space as an unitary entity. To achieve this task the exhibition spaces are characterised by three glass skylights intersecting all above ground levels, to let light get inside the building without interfering with the darkness sometimes required by some works of the artist. In any case the proposed visitors flow may be partially reorganised from time to time, to suit different requirements. Some areas are in fact separated by means of movable partitions to be used also as exhibition panels.

The images provided by the Promoter of the Artist’s work in the collection of the

Kyonggi Cultural Foundation have been carefully considered while designing the building. Nevertheless we are firmly convinced that a Museum is a living organism and as such must accept all possible eventual changes. The proposed internal space has then no intention of competing with the work of the Artist. Nevertheless our design is not renouncing to his identity, offering to the ideas of the Artist a fluid and dynamic flowing opportunity, developing around three ethereal glass skylights intersecting all above ground levels. Light and rain water, getting into the building, will enforce the presence of the Nature in an atmosphere where the works of the Artist are explicitly evoking virtual images of a worrying and promising future.
