Additionally, all IB objective criterion will be assessed at least once each trimester. A cumulative score is calculated for each trimester using the criterion scores and this is referenced on a scale of 1-7. Further details are attached. Design only meets 2x/week, so extra emphasis is placed on time management and meaningful collaboration with peers during class time, meeting deadlines, and accurately documenting process thinking. Students will have weekly, mostly creativity/critical thinking-driven homework.

I.B. Learning Aims •   Designers adapt their approach to different design situations, but they have

a common understanding of the process necessary to form valid and suitable solutions.

•   A designer has a role and responsibility to the community and the environment. Their decisions can have a huge impact and, therefore, their ethics and morals can and should be questioned regularly.

•   A designer should have the ability to maintain an unbiased view of a situation and evaluate a situation objectively, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of a common product or system.

•   Good communication is a key trait of any good designer through visual and oral presentation.

I.B. Learning Objectives Grading Criteria

IB learning objectives are determined across four objective criterion in each subject:

•   Objective A: Inquiring and Analyzing •   Objective B: Developing Ideas •   Objective C: Creating the solution •   Objective D: Evaluating

The “Design Cycle” is the official visual representation of our process model.

Students will receive a local grade which is percentage based and letter referenced. This can be found in the student handbook.

Trimesters 1-3

Design has an ever-evolving unit construction. Due to much of Design being interdisciplinary, many of our official “Design Challenges” and projects will take place in collaboration with other teacher’s unit schedules. IB Design is designated as a combination of product and

digital design. Below is a list of design types and genres that we will continue to explore or be

introduced to this school year:

-3D Printing using various design programs (AutoDesk, TinkerCAD, Sculptris and more)

-Architecture and Interior Design (using Google SketchUp)

-Furniture Design -Musical Design -Fashion Design

-(LED) lighting Design w/ Programming -Woodworking

-Simple Metalworking -Graphic Design

-Environmental/Sustainable Design -Food Design

-Urban/City Planning -Several Design challenges will derive from the 2014 and 2016 Science Olympiad Manuals….

and much more!
