EH Series Valves
These valves are specially designed for high-pressureapplications. Design EH valve configurations incorpo-rate proven techniques in flow-stream contouring forhigher capacities and in valve trim design for reliabilityin severe applications.
The temperature limits of Design EHT valves can beextended above 450"F (232"C) by using PEEK (Poly-EtherEtherKetone) anti-extrusion rings in combinationwith a spring-loaded PTFE seal. The PEEK anti-extru-sion rings expand to close off the clearance gap be-tween the plug and the cage where the PTFE sealmay extrude at high temperatures and pressures. Thetemperature limits are extended to 600"F (316"C) fornon-oxidizing service and to 500"F (260"C) for oxidiz-ing service.
Features(1- through 6-Inch Globe Valves and3- through 8-Inch Angle Valves)# Improved Cage Design—Drilled-hole cages,
offering superior strength and additional resistance todestructive vibration, are standard. Special materialsof construction are readily available.
# Optional O-ring Seat Ring Gasket Construc-tion—Use of O-ring construction provides excellentshut-off with minimal seat ring installation torques fortemperatures up to 450"F (232"C). O-ring construc-tion is standard on Design EHT valves.
# Increased Pressure/Temperature Ratings—Steel EH and EHA valves with buttwelding end con-nections have Intermediate Standard Ratings. Withnondestructive testing, these valves can conform to
ANSI Intermediate Special Ratings, which allow evenhigher pressure/temperature applications. See tables6 and 7 for specific ratings.
# Longer Trim Life—Hardened materials ofconstruction for the cage, valve plug, cage guiding, and other trim parts are standard for all applications, providing excellent wear resistance. In all applications, rugged cage guiding provides increased valve plugstability. Increased stability results in reduced vibrationand other mechanical stresses, which contributes tolong trim life.
# Piping Economy—The availability of expandedend connections on EH valves may eliminate the needfor line swages while accommodating oversized pipingarrangements.
# Control of Low Flow Rates/Tight Shut-off—The Micro-Form$ or Micro-Flute$ valve plug (figures5 or 6, respectively) provides superb rangeability inhigh-pressure, low-flow applications. A choice of sev-eral restricted port diameters helps match valve ca-pacity to required flow, assures necessary control withfull travel, and helps prevent throttling near the seat.
For EHA valves only, and in low-flow applicationswhere cavitation damage may occur, the Micro-Flat$style valve plug can be used. For soot-blower applica-tions, where the valve must provide tight shut-off, aspecial trim design is available. Please contact yourFisher Controls sales office or sales representative formore information.
For low-flow applications where cavitation damagemay occur and the minimum required Cv is equal to orgreater than 0.05, Cavitrol% III with Micro-Flat trim canbe used in both Design EH and Design EHA valves. Please contact your Fisher Controls sales office orsales representative for more information.
# High-Temperature, Class V Shutoff—Use ofC-seal trim (see figure 20) permits Class V shutoff upto 1100"F (593"C).
# Excellent Sealing—HIGH-SEAL$ packing sys-tems provide excellent sealing to prevent loss of valu-able or hazardous process fluid. This system (figure 1)features graphite packing material and heavy-duty liveloading.
# Sour Gas Trims Available—Long-lasting, ero-sion- and corrosion-resistant trims, with either a stan-dard or Whisper Trim% III cage and O-ring seat ringgasket construction (figure 2), are available for controlof sour gas fluids [National Association of CorrosionEngineers (MR0175)].

Features(8- through 14-Inch Globe Valves)
# High Capacity—Careful consideration of aerody-namic and hydrodynamic principles in the design ofthe flow stream passages results in 30 to 40 percenthigher capacity than conventional valves with compa-rable port sizes and travels.
# Longer Thermal-Cycle Life—The seat ring de-sign minimizes operational stresses, thereby reducingchances of distortion and resultant leakage caused bytemperature cycling. The hung cage design allowsthermal expansion of the cage without affecting theseat ring gasket loading.
# Operational Economy—Balanced trim construc-tions reduce forces acting on the valve plug, thus re-ducing actuator thrust requirements and permitting theuse of smaller actuators. This, combined with capaci-ties higher than comparably priced globe valves, makes the 8 through 14-inch EH Series valves veryeconomical for high-pressure, high-flow service.
# Excellent Sealing—HIGH-SEAL packing sys-tems provide excellent sealing to prevent loss of valu-able or hazardous process fluid. This system (figure 1)features graphite packing material and heavy-duty liveloading.
See Bulletin 59.1:061, HIGH-SEAL Packing Systemsfor Sliding-Stem Valves, for further information.
# Longer Trim Life—The rugged cage guidinghelps provide longer trim life. Hardened cage andvalve plug materials provide excellent wear resistance.
# Valve Plug Stability—Cage guiding aids thevalve plug stability to reduce vibration and mechanicalnoise, and eliminates need for hydraulic snubbers.
# Increased Pressure/Temperature Ratings—Steel EH Series valves with buttwelding end connec-tions have Intermediate Standard Ratings. With non-destructive examination, these valves can conform toANSI Intermediate Special Ratings, which allow evenhigher pressure/temperature applications.
# Optional Construction Allows for EasierMaintenance—O-ring seat ring gasket construction(figure 16), optional for lower temperature ranges andstandard for sour gas service, allows for easier seatring maintenance.
Features(20-Inch Globe Valves)# Reliability—All aspects of the control valve (ma-
terial selection, trim components, packing, and controlaccuracy) are designed, built, and tested to assureperformance and reliability. Extensive metallurgicalevaluation results in state-of-the-art cage and valveplug stem materials that help ensure trim life and de-pendable performance. The entire control valve as-sembly—trim, valve body, and actuator—reliably satis-fies customer requirements.
# Control Accuracy—The cage and valve plugdeliver accurate control of high pressure and high ca-pacity flow. Each cage has milled openings and is flowtested for the required flow characteristic. With pre-cise, accurate cage openings, accurate installed char-acteristics result; valves in parallel have the same flowat the same plug position. The cone-shaped plug re-duces fluid turbulence, helps ensure plug stability, andaids positioning accuracy.
# Longer Trim Life—Applications with large pres-sure drops and high mass flow rates have high soundpressure levels due to turbulence, vibration, and highenergy level within the valve. Noise abatement trimreduces this turbulence and vibration by dissipatingenergy at the source. Lower sound pressure levelsand less vibration reduce trim wear, thereby increasingtrim life.
# Easy Maintenance—The bonnet lifts off to allowtrim access. The separate seat ring and cage allowpart removal and maintenance. The globe configura-tion reduces the uneven trim wear and resultantmaintenance downtime normally associated with slantconfigurations. Installation with the stem vertical abovethe bonnet also makes trim removal and installationeasy.
# Control Flexibility—Special cage characteriza-tion (standard, Whisper Trim, or Cavitrol trim) can besupplied to satisfy almost any combination of flow andnoise or cavitation abatement. Cage characterizationand efficient flow passages provide close control forlow flow, high pressure drop conditions as well as highflow, low pressure drop conditions. A choice of actua-tor styles allows wide selection of power and controlcapabilities.
# Operational Economy—The balanced valveplug operation and the special, tapered cone on thebottom of the valve plug moderate fluid forces actingon the plug, reducing actuator thrust requirements.Actuator selection can be made from electromechani-cal or electrohydraulic styles that use readily availablepower sources.

1- through 6-Inch Globe Valves3- through 8-Inch Angle ValvesEH Series valves (figure 3) offer higher capacities, rugged cage guiding, hardened trim materials, and areavailable with special trims for noise attenuation andcavitation abatement. A Design EH valve package canbe created for specific service conditions from a vari-ety of special features, including oversized ends, inter-mediate ratings, special trim materials, and specialtrim configurations.
Because of flow capacity and severe service capabili-ties, both Design EH and EHA valves are used formany high-pressure applications in process industriessuch as power generation, hydrocarbon production, chemical processing, and refining. The Design EHD(figure 4) uses a balanced valve plug and is well suitedfor general applications where extremely tight shutoffis not required. The Design EHS (figures 5 and 6) hasan unbalanced valve plug and provides excellent shut-off. The Design EHT (figure 7) has a balanced valveplug and offers excellent shutoff with process temper-atures below 450"F (232"C).
Design EHA valves—EHAD (figure 8), EHAT (figure9), and EHAS—are angle versions of the Design EHvalve. Trim is interchangeable between a Design EHvalve and the next larger Design EHA. For example, the trim used in a two-inch, Design EHD is the samesize as (and is interchangeable with) the trim in thethree-inch, Design EHAD.
Design EH valves are available in ANSI Class 900,1500, and 2500 ratings. EHA valves are available inANSI Classes 900 and 1500 only. Because thesevalves feature a thicker body wall, both EH and EHAvalves are available with intermediate ratings. See theFeatures section on page 2.
Design EHA valves provide many of the same fea-tures available with EH valves. One important featureis the availability of special trims for aerodynamicnoise attenuation, for cavitating liquid service, and forsour gas service.

8- through 14-Inch Globe ValvesEH Series control valves (figure 12) are large, high-pressure globe valves that incorporate proven tech-niques in flow-stream contouring and in seat ring andvalve plug design. These features, along with ruggedcage guiding and hardened trim materials, make theEH Series valves reliable high-capacity valves.
These valves are used for many high-pressure ap-plications in the power, process, oil production, chemi-cal, refining, and other industries. The Design EHDvalve (figure 11) is well-suited to general applicationswhere extremely tight shutoff is not required, and theDesign EHT valve (figure 13) offers excellent shutofffor applications with relatively low process tempera-tures.
Principle of Operation(8- through 14-Inch Globe Valves)
Design EHD and EHT valves, shown in figures 11 and13, are balanced valve designs. When the valves areopening or closing, pressure registers on top of thevalve plug through the registration holes in the plug. The force of the pressure on top of the plug balances

The 20-inch Design EHD control valve (figure 17) is alarge, high-pressure, single-port, globe valve designedto closely and dependably control high-pressure, high-temperature media in the power and hydrocarbon in-dustries. For example, 20-inch Design EHD controlvalves are used in sliding pressure systems to controlhigh-pressure steam in fossil-fueled power plants.
Advanced, yet successfully field-proven, the 20-inchDesign EHD control valve usually incorporates specialdesign features to satisfy specific customer require-ments. For example, figure 18 illustrates a speciallycharacterized cage. Both Whisper Trim cage holesand large cage windows provide the customer-re-quired flow characteristic. Additionally, the drilledWhisper Trim holes in the cage provide noise abate-ment.
Standard construction details such as the cone-shaped valve plug and stem assembly, separate seatring, and HIGH-SEAL packing arrangement are alsoshown in figure 18.

The reliable 20-inch Design EHD valve design helpsensure continued control valve performance for criticalapplications. In addition, our domestic manufacturingcapability helps ensure delivery integrity. And our af-ter-sale capabilities include the fast response andtechnical expertise of local sales offices or sales repre-sentatives supported by factory design engineers, re-gional service centers, and domestic manufacturingfacilities only hours away.
Custom Design Capability (20-Inch Globe Valves)
Sliding pressure systems, as well as other control sys-tems, have specific performance characteristics thatrequire special control valve constructions. These spe-cial constructions must perform dependably and pro-vide accurate system operation and plant reliability.
As shown in figure 19, the basic 20-inch Design EHDvalve configuration can be designed to meet customerspecifications. Special cage characterization and ac-tuator/valve response characteristics can be designedand then confirmed through exhaustive testing andevaluation. Flow testing of these large valves takesplace at Fisher Controls’ R.A. Engel Technical CenterFlow Laboratory, the largest facility of its kind in NorthAmerica.
The final control valve assembly can be guaranteedfor reliable, dependable performance. This perfor-mance delivers controllability for not only the controlvalve but also the plant control system, sliding pres-sure or otherwise.
Backseats (20-Inch Globe Valves)
Backseats are provided on the 20-inch Design EHDvalve only as a means of limiting leakage in the unlike-ly event of a significant packing failure.
Backseating is not intended as a means for changingpacking on-line.

C-seal Trim DescriptionC-seal trim (figure 20) is available for valves with portdiameters from 2-7/8 inches through 7 inches.
With C-seal trim, a balanced valve can achieve high-
temperature, Class V shutoff. Because the C-seal plugseal is formed from metal (N07718 nickel alloy, Incon-el 718) rather than an elastomer, a valve equippedwith the C-seal trim can be applied in processes with afluid temperature of up to 1100"F (593"C).

Trim Selection Guidelines for 1- through6-Inch Globe and 3- through 8-InchAngle Valves
Please refer to the following descriptions as a guide-line for the selection of appropriate trims:
# Trim 50—Trim 50 is the standard trim for carbonsteel and alloy steel body materials and is recom-mended for general and severe service applications upto 800"F (427"C). Typical applications for Trim 50 in-clude services in water, boiler feedwater, non-sourhydrocarbons, and steam. The S41600 (416 stainlesssteel) heat-treated plug and seat ring have a hardnesssimilar to CoCr-A (Alloy 6).
# Trim 53—Trim 53 should be used in all high tem-perature applications between 800"F (427"C) and1050"F (566"C) unless chlorides are present. Thepresence of chlorides could lead to stress corrosioncracking of the CA28MWV (422 stainless steel) cage.
# Trim 54—Trim 54 is the standard trim for stain-less steel body materials. It should be used wherehard-faced trim is specified.
Trim 54 should not be used in boiler feedwater due toamine corrosion problems associated with CoCr-A.
# Trim 56—Trim 56 should be used for sour gasservice.

# Trim 57—Trim 57 should be used for boiler feed-water service when limits exceed those specified forTrim 50.
Care should be taken when specifying this trim insmall sizes for applications where chlorides are pres-ent due to stress corrosion cracking problems withS44004 (440C stainless steel).

Material Selection GuidelinesPlease use these numbered steps as a guideline forthe selection of materials:
1. Determine the pressure/temperature rating of thevalve size and material required. Inlet pressure andtemperature must always be limited by the applicableANSI pressure/temperature rating.
2. Select the desired valve style from the AvailableConfigurations specification and from the shutoff clas-sifications listed in tables 8, 9, and 11.
3. Select desired materials from tables 12, 13, 14, and15 and figures 22, 23, 24, and 25. The temperature
capabilities determined from figures 22, 23, 24, and 25may be further limited by the temperature capabilitiesof materials selected from tables 12, 13, 14, and 15.Refer to figures 22, 23, 24, and 25 to determine pres-sure drop limits of the body-trim combinations se-lected.
Inlet pressure and temperature must always be limitedby the applicable ANSI pressure-temperature rating.Contact your Fisher Controls sales office or sales rep-resentative for special materials for temperatures ex-ceeding the following maximum limits: Design EHDvalve [1100"F (593"C)] and the Design EHT valve[450"F (232"C)].

Installation
The valve must be installed so flow through the valvematches the flow direction arrow on the valve body.Consideration should be given to installing an up-stream strainer, especially if the valve uses a multi-ori-fice Whisper Trim III or Cavitrol III cage.
For 8-inch and larger valves, the recommended instal-lation position is with the valve in a horizontal pipelineand the actuator vertical above the valve. Other
orientations may result in shortened trim life and diffi-culty with field maintenance.
Overall dimensions are shown in figures 26, 27, 28,29, and 30. Face-to-face dimensions are in com-pliance with ANSI/ISA-S75 for valves smaller than8-inch. For 8-inch and larger valves, face-to-face di-mensions are longer than industry standards forvalves of this size and rating. Actual end connectiondimensions conform to ASME B16.25 for buttweldingends and to ASME B16.5 for flanged ends.
