DESIGN FOR ALL CONCEPT IN TOURIST

DESTINATIONS

Ville de Sète, 12 April 2010

LOTUS: Welcoming places

The population is diverse

Page 2: Design for all concept in tourist destinations

2

We may all face reduced mobility or function irrespective of our life phase or work.

Page 3: Design for all concept in tourist destinations

3

Dimensional, perceptual, motor and cognitive diversity have to be taken into account when developing environments because everybody has the WISH, the NEED and the RIGHT to be independent, to choose his/her way of life and to live it without the environment (created by us) putting barriers in his/her way.

Providing human beings with environments, products and services

that are ACCESSIBLE, COMFORTABLE AND AFFORDABLE

THE AIM IS:

Page 4: Design for all concept in tourist destinations

4

Design for All is the intervention in environments, products and services with the aim that everybody, including future generations, regardless of age, gender, the capabilities or cultural background, can participate in social, economic, cultural and leisure activities with equal opportunities.

DESIGN FOR ALL….UNIVERSAL DESIGN, INCLUSIVE DESIGN, DESIGN D’UTENZA AMPLIATA, etc….

1.- Respectful: it should respect the diversity of users. Nobody should feel marginalized and everybody should be able to get to it.

2.- Safe: it should be free of risks to all users. Therefore, all those elements which form part of an environment have to be designed with safety in mind.

3.- Healthy: it should not constitute a health risk or cause problems to those who suffer from certain illnesses or allergies. Even more, it should promote the healthy use of spaces and products.

DESIGN FOR ALL CRITERIA(www.eca.lu)

Page 5: Design for all concept in tourist destinations

5

4.- Functional: it should be designed in such a way that it can carry out the function for which it was intended without any problems or difficulties.

5.- Comprehensible: all users should be able to orient themselves without difficulty within a given space, and therefore the following are essential:a) Clear information: use of icons that are common to different countries, avoiding the use of words or abbreviations from the local language which may lead to confusion.b) Spatial distribution: this should be coherent and functional, avoiding disorientation and confusion.

6.- Aesthetic: the result should be aesthetically pleasing, as this will make it more likely to be accepted by everybody.

Not always renowned buildings are good buildings for the users

(I hate the very expensive sculptures that can’t be enjoyed by all citizens, but are paid by public founds)

To forecast the future we must open up beyond our small world.

Travel around and learn from other places experiences

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel

To prevent it the Foundation aims to compile and spread the knowledge created worldwide by the Design for All/Universal Design community.

This knowledge will be multilingual and will be validated by scientific committees in each language.

The aim of welcomeforall

We have been following the discussions about accessibility in general for more than 20 years and seen all the initiatives towards a harmonised approach to the topic. Despite the growing awareness for the important role of accessibility in our changing societies, it is still not been possible to find agreements on a world wide or even European “strategy for all”.

On the other hand, the globalisation facilities free movement between countries and continents and all those who are dependent from the availability of responses to their particular needs are, again and again, restricted in their freedom of movement.

As we are not able to provide the miracle remedy to the pending harmonisation of accessibility, we wish –in the meantime- to help all those who look for responses to their needs.

That is the original idea creating a network of welcomeforall infopoints.
