Review of Design Problem and
Alternative Selection
Design Problem
Modify existing patient transfer unit to move up to 6” in
the vertical direction
A single supporting member instead of two
Support a minimum of 500lbs
No electrical components
Design of a Multi-Purpose Chair Lift – Final Presentation – March 31st, 2015
Review of Design Problem and
Alternative Selection
Why is it better than other lifts?
Height adjustable to fit all hospital beds
Other lifts are often immobile
Ease of operation
No need for electronic components
Simple to construct

Identification of Constraints
Economic
$250 budget assigned by the Faculty
$225 spent on parts and labour:
Hydraulic Cylinder: $95
Hose and Fittings: $30
Mechanical Pump: $75
Technical Services: Supplied by Dr. Hinchey
Design of a Multi-Purpose Chair Lift – Final Presentation – March 31st, 2015
Identification of Constraints
Environmental
As this is a fully mechanical system with no electronic components or emissions it will
be 100% environmentally friendly. All aluminum parts were recycled
Water as the working fluid
Safety
Safety is the number one concern for this project
All components are designed with safety in mind and can support over 500lbs
