Shibuya epitomizes the realm of consumer with its vibrant street culture and prominent storefronts, all of which serve the constant flux of shoppers as a collective. The city fabric, architecture, and people that define Shibuya exist in layers, and this consumer driven culture has transformed these layers into superficial masks over what lies beneath. The urban sento of this project provides a contrast to the overstimulating context of Shibuya. Japan has a rich history of sentos, or bathhouses, being a place for community, conversation, and a sort of moment of rest in the cityscape. This project is an attempt to bring those ideals to this commercial, material driven district.

Beige alabaster was chosen for the facade for its soft diffusion of light. Inside, the material being evocative of suspended steam connects the material to the program while blocking the view out to the street. The activity in the surrounding commercial district disappears, and the focus of the experience remains inside.

Changes in height through the entry sequence lend variety to the traditional sento plan since the site has more vertical space. The journey up and through these spaces is as important as the spaces themselves.

This design-build experiment explored the architectural possibilities of digital fabrication. Working collaboratively with the Architecture Department, a third year studio transformed a leftover space under a staircase into a thriving lounge where architecture students can unwind and enjoy some coffee. My design role in the project was primarily concerned with developing and refining the components of the display wall and model stands in conjunction with three other students, starting with the hidden framing structure. Otherwise, I was responsible for timely fabrication of each component from the five design teams as the project manager.

Physical study models, full scale tape mock-ups, and the laser cut model-as-prototype allowed the design sequence to graduate to eventual processing and cutting on the CNC router. Precise 3D computer modeling of the wall components minimized on-site changes during the construction phase.

A display showcase for acclaimed student work was a primary design goal for the lounge. Shelving nooks for club magazines, books, or a student’s laptop sit adjacent to the bench meant for lounging, while pull out pedestals reveal a 6 foot tall cork board for drawings and posters. Physical models can sit atop the pedestals once two of them are pushed together, and smaller study models can sit on the hidden shelving within each pedestal.

03 RETHINKING THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Professor Jim Doerfler | 2010

San Diego, California

In collaboration with Juan Padilla and Nhu Hoang

In conjunction with an active LPA renovation project of Mann Middle School, our design team was asked to provide a master plan for a new campus while keeping the existing auditorium. After discussing campus needs with faculty and administrators, we established three main design goals: students + community on one campus; indoor + outdoor spaces as equal teaching tools; and awareness + implementation of sustainable environments. Because of the large pedestrian presence in the community, public oriented spaces line the property perimeter for ease of access. Student spaces sit above the 15 foot hill with relatively more privacy.

book stacks dropped ceilingsrampsunken readingBook stacks are kept on the ramp to define programmatic space and free up floor space.

Dropped ceilings at the entrance allows for HVAC systems on the roof to stay hidden behind parapets.

The ramp connects the three levels together - the main house collection, student reading, and the ground level.

We created a special sunken area for students to interact and study.

I love that the sun doesn’t set until 22:00 here. I love that Piera comes out every night to smoke a cigarette and yells ‘buona notte’ to me from her porch. I love that I can sit at a table outside, in front of the most spectacular sea of green I’ve ever seen. I love knowing that once I turn off the music and everyone trickles up the stairs, I won’t hear a single sound from Valle di Muggio. I love that I can count the number of lights in the valley. I love that I walked three miles today and I don’t mind it at all. I love our cooks, Natalia and Mossimo, who make good food but better company. I love Italiano and its poetic ups and downs. And I love that, at this very second, I am witnessing a lightning storm in the making.

Clinking dinner plates make their way into the kitchen, handed off to the cleaning crew of the day. The sun sets behind the green hills, and scattered pillows of white follow close behind. Without fail, we hear the rumbles begin. Every storm feels like an orchestrated show in which we are a mere audience. The first lightning strike illuminates the entire valley, and twenty-three scurry to the best vantage points of the ostello to watch, record, and stand in awe of the lights and sound.

We descend from a taxi and follow other well dressed tourists and locals to the heart of Verona, L’Arena. Amid the endless shops and outdoor restaurants lies this magnificently weathered relic of a time past. Yet, the show about to commence transforms this arena into a thriving, living place of the present. The murmurs of anxious actors and the buzz of pre-show audience chatter all cease at the start of the music. The orchestra swells, and candles slowly dot the human landscape as the sun sets behind the arena. The realization of this experience being shared with a Roman in this very seat so long ago sends a chill through my body. The sky turns dark blue as the costumes shine even brighter gold, but the music is drowned out with the first crack of thunder. Many people decide to leave as the first raindrops fall, but we stay behind and watch this extra performance play out. Conversation among friends passes the time until the thunder stops, and the music begins once more.

after An independent businesswoman asked for more streamlined menus that prominently displayed pricing and ingredients. Saffron Cuisine now utilizes the new menus for farmer’s market stands in the five cities of the Central Coast.
