Cyprus 1974: The forced geographical separation of the two main communities of the island, the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, today have been developed back to back, creating two realities separated but joined by the third space, the Buffer Zone. Because of the lack of a political solution to be given the Occupy movement of Cyprus, have joined forces to set up camp inside the buffer zone demanding reunification. A network from different types of people with different backgrounds from both communities co-operate on site to create an actual and symbolic bridge. The assembly components are made out of waste timber found around the surrounding timber workshops. It is an emergent system that comes to life through a bi-communal effort to make their own style of living , and in that way becomes symbolic. The project is based on a time based growth of occupation in order to adapt to the expansion of the occupation in the future.

2008 Ledra Street recently opened on 3 April 2008 and now the most central of all crossings.

1974More than one quarter of the population of Cyprus was expelled from the occupied northern part of the island where Greek Cypriots constituted 80% of the population. There was also a flow of roughly 60,000 Turkish Cypriots from the south to the north after the conflict The Turkish inva-sion ended in the partition of Cyprus along the UN-monitored Green Line which still divides Cyprus today.

2012OCCUPY THE BUFFER ZONE -CYPRUS:Inspired by the global “Occupy” movement, youths from across the divide in Cyprus have joined forces to set up camp inside the buffer zone that has split the island since 1974, demanding reunification. The activists are expanding day by day.

london_2011robofold factory shape to fabricationA new concept in architectural workshops. Experience the best in generative design software and digital fabrication techniques from the developers themselves. Four days of workshops that bring together software and hardware developers in 4 teams. Each team designs, fabricates and assembles compo-nents into a common structure.

The Cosmogony of Burn-ing man2011

Page 17: Design Portfolio

Cosmogony, as in the coming into existence, is a network of collaboration and participation in the city of burning man. Cosmogony is based on 50 000 components (10 variations of them) which will be given to 50 000 burners and their interaction will enable the social phenomenon of participa-tion. People have their own freedom to make their own cre-ations. People receive one single component with their ticket to the festival. The project is enabled only when the people intermingle with each other. The assembly process can be interesting and fun. it also invites curiosity. The beauty of the potential structure(s) is that no one knows where it will ap-pear, it isn’t organized and it just grows. What is suggested is the direct interaction of humans. a manual of directions for possible structures to be made will be given to burners as a start point. a variety of scales, from a chair, to a bed, to a dancing platform to a mega structure. The aim of this pro-ject regardless of one’s physical capabilities, skills, interests or geographical location is to engage in the creation of a mega structure by adding their component to it. a structure made by everyone that belongs to everyone. When the fes-tival will be over, the burners will be able to disassemble the structure and take their components back home.for more info visit: http://burningmanproject.wordpress.com/

The aCaDemy for noses2010-2011 a redundant perfume factory set in a wasteland outside madrid is (re)adjusted as an academy for noses. once an immense gal factory produced favourite spanish scents. The one (huge) remaining building represents the last drop of this memory and skill base. in the whole world there are 500 noses … the gifted sniffers of the perfume industry. This extreme ratio is matched in perfume itself … 15,000 lavender plants yield a mere 10ml of lavender oil.The academy sits in a field of lavender representing this equation. The lavender flowers are ritualistically harvested and prepared for an annual distillation ceremony coincident with the graduation of 5 more noses. The thousands of oils arranged in tiny precious bottles and conjured by the noses into seductive smells therefore represent an immense acreage. The students cultivate their knowledge and practice in laboratories, libraries and studios arranged within the factory shell, buffered from the odours of the everyday.

THE G.C.P. CENTRE2008-2009 “There are three forms of visual art. Painting is the art to look at, sculpture is the art to walk around and architecture is the art to walk through”. The design explores the link be-tween the three forms of visual art and how they can be re-lated in terms of space and form. guernica of Picasso is the painting, Chicago Picasso is the sculpture and the guernica Chicago Picasso art Centre is the architecture. Like Painting, architecture arises out of political, social and cultural ideas that influenced my conception. Through a journey of visual perception influenced by material, space and light the rela-tionship between art and context is explored.
