Over 50 years ago, when Walt Disney was planning the

theme park of his dreams, he turned to the most creative

people he knew — the artists responsible for the award-

winning animated movies of the Walt Disney company.

He hand selected this group to visualize, design and build

Disneyland® park. Today, the Imagineers are responsible

for every Disney theme park throughout the world. But we

will always remember — it all started in an orange grove

in Southern California.

Welcome to the Great Hall — the living

room of your home away from home.

The rug of the Great Hall is a sixty foot

by ninety foot hand-woven rug bearing the images of

California poppies and pomegranates. This amazing work

of art is bordered by perfectly blended, water-cut stones.

These stones are so precisely cut that when placed

together they are practically seamless. You might also

notice the poppies in the rug are closed. The Imagineers

designed it that way because the rug is indoors and

poppies only open in sunlight.

Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel® was

designed as a tribute to the Arts and Crafts

movement of the late 19th and early 20th

centuries. The Imagineers adhered to the vision of the

founders of the Arts and Crafts movement, who wanted

to create a unified aesthetic, encompassing everything

from the architecture of a structure all the way down to

the design of its furniture, fixtures and decorations. The

Imagineers were specifically inspired by 6 designers: Frank

Lloyd Wright, Albert Schweinfurth, Bernard Maybeck,

Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Charles and Henry

Greene. All in an attempt to inspire our guests.

Californian Hotel® as a magnificent

homage to the Golden State both inside

and out. As you walk around the outside of the hotel, you

may notice a difference in the landscaping from south of the

hotel to north of the hotel. That is because the southern

landscaping was designed to reflect the flora you will find

in Southern California, and the northern landscaping to reflect

Northern California. A touch most might not notice, but an
