Backing 39" x 37"

SUPPlIES

• Batting 39" x 37"• All-purpose thread to match

fabrics

• Quilting thread• 1½ yards 18"-wide fusible web*• Basic sewing tools and supplies

*Fusible web supplied by Bosal.

I N S T R U C T I O N SCompleting the AppliquéStep 1. Make a pattern for each appli-qué shape using the full-size patterns given, adding excess where pieces overlap as indicated on pattern.Step 2. Trace shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web, leaving at least 1/2" between pieces; cut out shapes, leaving a margin around each one.

Step 3. Fuse shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics referring to patterns for color; cut out shapes on traced lines. Remove paper backing.

Completing the QuiltStep 1. Join 21 B squares to make a 21-unit B strip; press seams in one di-rection. Repeat to make a total of two 21-unit B strips.Step 2. Join the two 21-unit B strips to make a side strip; press seam in one direction.Step 3. Sew the side strip to the right-side edge of A as shown in Figure 1; press seam away from A.

Step 4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to make a 23-unit bottom strip.Step 5. Sew the bottom strip to the bottom of the A-B unit to complete the pieced center; press seam away from A.Step 6. Sew the C strip to the right-side edge and the D strip to the left-side edge of the pieced center; press seams toward C and D strips.

Designer’s tips• When doing raw-edge appliqué with fusible web, reduce the stitch length to 1.8. This will help you create smooth angles and curves when stitching. Use a Microtex 70/10 needle. It results in a smaller needle hole in the finished project.• Batiks work well for machine appliqué. They are a finer weave and don’t fray nearly as much as regular cottons.• If you are fusing a light fabric onto a dark background, consider double-fusing the light fabric to avoid having the darker fabric show through the light fabric. Sim-ply fuse two pieces of the lighter fabrics together before tracing and fusing the pattern shape. This will result in a heavier feel to the finished project, but it does prevent those annoying shadows showing through.

Use a zigzag stitch while free-motion quilting to create the top of the cornstalks. The vines are free-motion quilted. Quilt in the corn with black, rust and yellow threads while free-motion quilt-ing. The background quilting is a repeat of the vine motif.

How to Quilt

Step 7. Sew an E strip to the top and bottom of the pieced center; press seams toward E strips.Step 8. Referring to the pattern, ar-range and fuse the appliqué shapes in place in numerical order, overlapping pieces as necessary. Step 9. When appliqué is complete, straight-stitch edges in place using thread to match fabrics.

Finishing your QuiltStep 1. Sandwich the batting between the completed top and prepared back-ing; pin or baste layers together to hold. Step 2. Quilt as desired by hand or machine; remove pins or basting. Trim excess backing and batting even with quilt top.Step 3. Join binding strips on short ends with diagonal seams to make one long

strip; trim seams to 1/4" and press seams open. Fold the strip in half along length with wrong sides together; press.Step 4. Sew binding to the right side of the quilt edges, overlapping ends. Fold binding to the back side and stitch in place. QW
