Support

Expert technical support and a full NBS-based specification facility are available, supported by a team of Specification Managers and our project management service provides a single point of contact at all stages. As members of the RIBA CPD Providers’ Network, we offer specifiers an independently assessed CPD seminar service with attendance certificates.

Installation Partners

Leaderflush Shapland has formed strategic relationships with numerous joinery subcontractors across the UK to offer an Installation Partners scheme for doorsets. Each Installation Partner recommended by Leaderflush Shapland is fully conversant in the latest installation techniques to ensure a continued chain of quality from manufacture to installation. A list of these Installation Partners can be found on our website www.leaderflushshapland.co.uk/installationlist.php.

Sustainability

We have developed an Environmental Management System in accordance with BS EN ISO 14001:2004, based on a

company Environmental Policy. Leaderflush Shapland is essentially a timber based manufacturing company and was the first company in its industry to develop and implement tracking systems independently assessed by the ‘FSC Trada Trak’ accreditation scheme. As a result, doors and doorsets can be specified using solid timber and timber-based raw materials exclusively from well-managed and sustainable sources, independently certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Diversity

In addition to the Designer Range, Leaderflush Shapland offers the Plasform® Range of postformed doors and doorsets, and the Extended Performance Range with enhanced characteristics covering acoustics, extended fire resistance, radiation shielding and security.

Certification

All our doors and doorsets are fully certified to recognised performance standards. The company is accredited to BS EN ISO 9001: 2008. All fire resisting products are manufactured under the intensive BWF-CERTIFIRE

independent product conformity scheme. Every fire door or doorset carries a tamper evident and fully traceable label with clear essential information.

Innovation

Continuing product development and an exhaustive performance testing programme enable us to offer a wide scope of certified doorsets. In addition to regular performance testing by UKAS accredited independent bodies our in-house test facility allows continuous product development and quality assurance checks. Our test facilities include a furnace for full size doorsets, cyclic testing rigs, as well as equipment for assessing mechanical properties and security performance. But this innovative approach is also applied to customer service and procurement initiatives to meet the challenges of today’s construction industry.

Architectural Hardware

Leaderflush Shapland offers a full range of architectural hardware creating the complete end-to-end solution for a total doorset package. Our offer is available in two distinct ranges – Origins and Elements – providing architects and

specifiers with products that are suitable for any application. An experienced team is on-hand to provide a full specification support service and have been accredited by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers.

Introducing Designer

The core product offer from Leaderflush Shapland is the Designer Range, giving specifiers complete freedom in flush doors and doorsets with numerous wood veneer, PVC, paint and metal finishes. The most popular options are included with 4 frame types and 11 vision panel designs – all of which have already been fire-tested and certified.

The Designer Range also gives the specifier opportunities to produce unique designs that meet specific performance requirements. This is achieved by the partnerships which we forge with specifiers to ensure that design visions are carried through to practical long-term solutions.

All Designer Range doors, doorsets and screens are made to order and there are no prescribed opening dimensions. As an intrinsic part of our service to you, door constructions and thicknesses, together with detailed design and doorset component selection, are automatically generated to meet your performance requirements and design concepts. To maintain consistently high quality standards, our doors and doorsets should be supplied fully decorated and factory

glazed wherever possible, although on-site finishing by others can be accommodated. We also advocate specification of complete doorsets – factory assembled under strict quality control regimes and fully certificated to ensure consistent performance on-site.

Why choose Designer

The Designer Range brings you complete design freedom in flush doorsets, while we focus on meeting performance demands and realising your design vision. This is achieved by working in partnership so that you benefit from our unrivalled expertise, service and product quality.

The Designer Range suits virtually any application and the only limit to what we can achieve together is your imagination. With every commercial wood veneer option available, as well as PVC, paint and metal finishes, the choice is massive. Add distinctive vision panels and ironmongery to create your own style of flush doorset, in the knowledge that fire, smoke, acoustic, durability and other performance requirements are being met.

BWF-CERTIFIRE scheme

BWF-CERTIFIRE audits are undertaken on a regular basis by CERTIFIRE’s Independent Auditors for the manufacture of doors and doorsets. Only BWF-CERTIFIRE approved ironmongery, glazing and seals are used, and every fire door or doorset carries a tamper-evident and fully traceable BWF-CERTIFIRE label of authenticity.

creative freedom realised with our expertise in veneers

P. 08

Within the Designer Range the specifier has complete freedom to choose any wood veneer that is commercially available. We can help specifiers with selection and provide samples of veneers and products which are useful during the project planning stage.

The way in which individual sheets of veneers are cut and assembled will substantially affect the appearance of the end product. For ideas on colours and veneer design visit our online veneer selector at: www.leaderflushshapland.co.uk/veneer_selector.php.

Cutting methods

Quarter cut

The log is cut along its length to form four separate ‘quarter logs’. These are then sliced at 90 degrees to the growth rings to provide the sheets which give a striped appearance when assembled.

Crown cut

The log is simply sliced along its length, resulting in a figured appearance.

Rotary cut

The log is simply peeled to give a continuous veneer, generally used for constructional plywood. Veneer sheets cannot be matched except for general colour characteristics and their appearance is wild and flowery.

The most popular patterns are shown here but the designer has unlimited scope, as illustrated on pages 12-13. Lay-on patterns can be repeated over pairs of doors, overpanels and side panels. We can advise on the best method of achieving particular visual effects.

Book matched

Two adjacent sheets, as cut from the flitch, are placed next to each other and one is turned over to create a mirror image. This can be repeated over the door and used to create a central focus.

Consecutively laid (slip matched)

The lay-on is assembled across the face of the door using adjacent sheets as cut from the flitch. Sheets are consecutively laid next to each other in the same order and with the same face outward resulting in a planked effect.

Centre jointed

Equal numbers of sheets are used working outwards from the

centre line of the door in width. Sheets are selected so that the left half of the door matches the right half, resulting in a mirror image. Alternatively adjacent sheets can be consecutively laid.

Centred feature

An unequal number of sheets is used and the central veneer is usually selected for its striking appearance. To emphasise its focal position the remaining sheets can be laid so that those on the left half mirror those on the right half. Alternatively adjacent sheets can be consecutively laid.

Quartered

The veneers are laid reversed about two axes so that a mirror image is created in both width and height. Sheets can be cut and arranged to give a centred feature.

All veneered doors have hardwood lippings to both vertical edges, softened with a 3mm radius, or alternatively to all 4 edges. These can either be exposed or concealed as required. Lippings are selected to colour match or contrast either the veneer or frame.

Veneer finish and protection

To enhance and protect veneered doors and doorsets, we recommend that they are fully finished with either Hyalux Natural or Hyalux Tint. Hyalux Natural is a clear polishing system which gives a durable, lustrous, satin finish emphasising the veneer grain, while Hyalux Tint offers the specifier a choice of translucent colours (British Standards or RAL) applied to the veneer. Alternative finishes can also be provided.

Hygienilac® – antimicrobial protection

Hygienilac® is a biocidally proactive additive, integral to both Hyalux Natural and the Hyalux Tint, that provides protection against harmful bacteria such as C.diff, MRSA and Salmonella. Hygienilac® works by preventing the bacteria’s access to nutrients so that they starve and die. It does not employ silver technology, rendering it completely UV stable and remains effective for years because of its inherently low water solubility.

Popular veneer designs

Examples of the more popular, straightforward veneered door styles using a single timber species are shown on these pages, highlighting the beauty of wood without complex design statements. Here, it is the character of the timber itself that determines the particular appearance of the door.

Bespoke designs with veneers

Complete creative freedom can also be accommodated, working in partnership with Leaderflush Shapland veneer experts to realise more adventurous designs. Various techniques can be used including contrasting inlays where

veneers from different timbers or combinations of tinted and natural veneers are laid on the same door face. A variety of effects can be created ranging from subtle differences to the most striking design statement. Just a few examples are shown on these pages.

Introduction

Helping designers realise their design visions, Leaderflush Shapland offers a wide range of finishes suitable for any environment or application.

Laminate and PVC facings

Decorative laminates and other PVC facings are available from the Designer Range to give increased impact resistance. Laminate finishes have a surface colour and slightly textured finish, PVC has a through colour and smooth finish, or fully textured for high impact resistance. The specifier has complete freedom of choice from facing manufacturers’ ranges. Postformed laminate, Hygieniform PVC and PVC faced doors are fully illustrated within our Plasform® brochure.

Metal facings

Sheet metal can be bonded to the door construction during the manufacturing process. The facing options include mild, patterned and brushed stainless, or galvanised steel. Patterned steel facings can also be applied in the form of trays to fully encapsulate the door. Steel facings can be left clean, primed, powder coated or stove enamelled, with the

exception of patterned stainless steel which is self-finished. Steel frames can be supplied finished to complement door facings.

With the exception of doors fitted with trays, all doors have exposed hardwood lippings to both vertical edges softened with a 3mm radius, or to all 4 edges if required with square edged top and bottom.

Paint finishes

Designer Range doorsets can be finished with Velvalux Opaque, a factory applied pigmented polyurethane paint available in any colour within RAL or British Standard ranges, for which colour matched PVC pellets are supplied to conceal frame fixings. We can provide samples for selection and production control purposes, or the specifier can supply material for colour matching.

Hygieniform PVC – antimicrobial PVC

Leaderflush Shapland have introduced an innovative and exclusive high impact PVC facing – Hygieniform. As part of the Designer range of products, Hygieniform incorporates the Hygienilac® antimicrobial additive within the matrix of

Design considerations

In order to facilitate this process we manufacture all doorsets to individual orders, allowing differences in size, configuration and construction to be accommodated.

As size, configuration, door construction and performance are all interrelated, we are keen to discuss specific requirements at the earliest stages of a project. As a guide, individual doors with a maximum width of 1300mm or a maximum height of 3000mm can be provided. Where doors only are required for refurbishment and upgrade projects, oversize lippings can be included to allow for on-site adjustment.

Doors and doorsets can be produced in single or paired configurations and in either single or double action modes.

For unique solutions to meet the disabled access requirements of the Building Regulations Part M, refer to the Pivette doorset on page 28. Overpanels or glazed fanlights can be incorporated within doorset configurations. Where required, lippings are selected and finished to match or contrast the door and can either be exposed or concealed.

Vision panels

One of the key features of the Designer Range is the ability to integrate unusual vision panels. Whilst typical configurations are illustrated to the left, specifiers can also have the freedom to design doors that are individual.

Typical configurations

Within the Designer Range there are 11 commonly used vision panel configurations as illustrated opposite. As glazing has a major impact on fire performance, appropriate glazing and beading configurations need to be accounted for depending on the performance requirements. The configurations below provide up to 60 minutes fire resistance for hardwood bolection bead, hardwood flush bead and steel trim options.

The glass retention systems available include hardwood bolection and flush beads, or alternatively steel trims, all as detailed. For specialised glazing systems, for example with glazing and facing flush in appearance used in hygienic or similar areas, refer to the Plasform® Range.

To ensure quality and specified performance, all doors must be factory glazed. Hardwood beads can either be fully polished or painted to match the door or doorset. These are generally fixed with steel pins, punched in and filled, although other fixing methods are available. Steel trim alternatives allow the designer to match vision panels with door furniture, protective plates or other accessories and are screw fixed into position. Glazing for vision panels in fire rated doors can either be wired or unwired, insulated or uninsulated and clear or obscured glass.

Non-typical configurations

For other shapes, sizes, positions and details of vision panels, the constraints set out in the ‘Specifying with Doors and Doorsets’ technical guide should be considered or discussions held with us at an early design stage.

Intelliglass®

Intelliglass® obscurable vision panels provide the ideal solution where privacy may be required, for example in environments such as hospitals, consulting rooms, banks, therapy rooms, commercial offices and schools.

Intelliglass® vision panels utilise liquid crystals which are sandwiched between two layers of transparent conductive film to make LC Privacy Film. The film is then laminated between two pieces of glass. When electricity is applied to the film the liquid crystals line up and the vision panel is clear. When the power is turned off, the liquid crystals return to their normal positions and turn the glass from clear to obscured.

The panels can be changed from clear to frosted at the flick of a switch. This intelligent glazing system can be automatically or remotely controlled by connection to a PC or by wireless connection or simply a switch adjacent to the doorset. As there are no protrusions to cause dust or dirt build-up, they are ideal for locations where hygiene is of prime importance.

The high-tech Intelliglass® vision panel solution obviates the need for cumbersome mechanical systems, blinds, shutters or curtains.

Intelliglass® is available in two standard sizes: 400mm x 400mm and 800mm x 250mm. For non-standard sizes please contact our Technical Services Department on: 01773 530500 or email: [email protected].

Louvres and grilles

For ventilation, air transfer grilles or louvres can be fitted into Designer Range doors and doorsets.

P. 20

Frames

The Designer Range offers a choice of four recognised frame designs, although we are able to manufacture other frame sections if preferred. A minimum lining thickness of 32mm is required, however, in some situations certain ironmongery products require a thicker frame.

All frame designs are available to suit common standard partition widths of 94, 100, 113, 126 and 144mm, however other widths can be accommodated. Solo frames can be manufactured to suit specific size requirements while the two part Cubith design has in-built flexibility. Mono and Barum frames can be adapted to non-standard partition thicknesses using an 18mm thick extension lining at a minimum of 44mm wide. Where extension linings cannot be used, a one piece Mono or Barum frame will be manufactured to suit. For double action situations the Barum frame without the stop should be used.

Three of the designs – Mono, Cubith and Barum – can be manufactured from hardwood, softwood or MDF with all feature edges softened to a 3mm radius. All three are available with the clear Hyalux Natural polishing system or Hyalux Tint translucent colour finish. Both Hyalux Natural and Hyalux Tint will contain the Hygienilac® antimicrobial additive.

To protect the factory finish and conceal on-site fixings, frames, linings, stops and architraves can be counter bored and supplied with matching pellets. Additional options for stops and architraves include the Leaderflush Shapland secret-fix detail or pinning and filling on-site by others.

The steel frame design – Solo – has a rebated section made to suit the partition thicknesses specified. The face can be left clean, primed or powder coated. Solo frames can also be manufactured in stainless steel with a brushed finish. Pre-prepared holes are incorporated for on-site fixing, concealed by flush, steel cover discs to match the chosen finish. The Split Solo is also available to cater for varying partition thicknesses.

Glazed screens

Door leaves from the Designer Range can be incorporated into glazed screens constructed using the Barum frame section in order to comply with fire certification up to 60 minutes. For either clear or wired glass, the maximum individual pane size that can be accommodated is 2420mm wide or 2420mm high, but not exceeding 2.15m2 area.

Screens are supplied ready for glazing by others on-site and the frame section is available in hardwood or softwood. They can be finished with our clear, satin finish, Hyalux Natural polishing system or Hyalux Tint to give a translucent colour accentuating the grain of the timber. Alternatively, they can be supplied primed ready for painting on-site. Both Hyalux Natural and Hyalux Tint will contain the Hygienilac® antimicrobial additive that is applied, as standard, to all veneer facing options.

Technical details on frames can be found in our Specifying with Doors and Doorsets brochure. Alternatively, contact our Technical Services Department on 01773 530500 for further details.

Intumescent and smoke seals

Perimeter fire seals are essential to performance and there are three types available: intumescent, intumescent and smoke seal combined, and concealed intumescent. The first two systems incorporate exposed intumescent strips to the frame jambs and head as a standard, whereas the concealed method houses the intumescent strips behind vertical door lippings but exposed on top. Generally, exposed intumescents are 10mm x 4mm for 30 minute performance and 20mm x 4mm for 60 minutes.

Where complete doorsets are being supplied, all necessary intumescent seals will be included to the frame as a standard, in order to achieve the stated performance. However, the specifier needs to indicate whether the concealed method is required. In the case of pairs of fire-rated doors, a combined intumescent and smoke seal will be incorporated at the meeting stile of the primary leaf corresponding with a plain intumescent in the secondary leaf.

Where doors only are being supplied, seals need to be specified precisely if required. If intumescents are to be fitted by others, they must comply with our fire certification requirements details of which can be found in the BWF-CERTIFIRE data sheets supplied with the doors.

Concealed intumescent seals can be incorporated into the vertical edges of single doors. With pairs of doors, the primary leaf will always feature an exposed combination seal at the meeting stile. The intumescent in the top edge must be exposed and is positioned to run the full width of the door leaf.

Use of a combined intumescent and smoke seal or a separate smoke seal will provide smoke protection in accordance with BS 476 Part 31.1. Approved Document B states that the bottom edge can be ignored, however certain sectors require this edge to be sealed. Contact Technical Services on 01773 530500 for further clarification.

Page 24: Designer Rangecms.esi.info/Media/documents/Leade_Designer_ML.pdf · the technical guide ‘Specifying with Doors and Doorsets’. Our website provides guidance on the specification

For some time, the hinge edge of a door has been seen as a possible area of harm for children, with a potential for shearing and crushing of small, inquisitive fingers, as door closers fitted as part of the fire-safety requirements shut the door automatically.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA), 30,000 children trap and seriously injure their fingers in doors every year and more than 1500 of these children will need surgery. The cost of litigation for such incidents can also be substantial. Traditionally, these vulnerable areas have been protected by bulky and unsightly retro-fit products which are expensive and prone to damage and vandalism. Now, Leaderflush Shapland has developed an innovative new finger and hand protection system, Sentinel (patent pending), which offers both a discreet and aesthetically pleasing solution. Sentinel uses a pivoted design with decorative timber elements as an integral part of the doorset and is ideal for educational environments, nurseries, health centres, hospitals and commercial applications.

Safe and sound

The Sentinel doorset is more than just an innovative way to guard against injuries to hands and fingers

Sentinel is also a high performance doorset offering up to 60 minute fire resistance, Approved Document M and BS8300 compliant opening forces and 30 RwdB acoustic performance.

P. 25

An integral part of the doorset

Seals and essential ironmongery are included, eliminating the risk of certification problems. This integral solution not only satisfies important performance requirements – compliant opening forces, fire resistance of up to 60 minutes and the acoustic requirements in schools of 30 RwdB but also adds an option for a unique, contemporary, modern design for timber doorsets. It also negates the need for on-site trades fitting retro-fit components. With all materials used in the manufacture either FSC accredited or FSC neutral, Sentinel is environmentally friendly as well as being one of the most effective and unobtrusive finger protection solutions in the marketplace.

Why specify Sentinel – Sentinel provides effective and unobtrusive finger protection whilst guaranteeing the highest levels of performance

Door finish

Sentinel doorsets can be faced in veneer, laminate or can be supplied primed. In each instance the profiled hanging edge is supplied factory finished in lacquered hardwood and should not be painted over.

Architectural Hardware

Sentinel doorsets are supplied complete with all essential ironmongery. This is absolutely essential in order to ensure that the performance characteristics – opening force, sound reduction, smoke control and fire resistance – are maintained. The ironmongery pack supplied will vary according to the performance and finish specified.

Supply of Sentinel doorsets to site

Sentinel doorsets are supplied with door leaf and frame separate. The door leaf which operates with use of a pivot system is quick and easy to fit on-site, once the frame is installed, enabling the door leaf to be removed simply for inspection.

Technical information

Sentinel doorsets have additional performance characteristics which makes this latest innovation from Leaderflush Shapland far more than a finger protection solution. The summary below outlines the technical characteristics that are achieved through specifying Sentinel doorsets.

The following diagrams illustrate the differences between a traditional frame profile and the innovative Sentinel design from Leaderflush Shapland:

• Extended product life and reduced maintenance costs

• Ergonomic, smooth design has no dirt traps enabling easy cleaning and the lacquer contains Hygienilac® antimicrobial protection

• Traditional retro-fit finger guards often increase required opening force, whereas Sentinel complies with Approved Document M and BS8300.

As an integral part of the Sentinel doorset, the scalloped profile brings the following key advantages:

• Prevents the crushing and shearing of fingers (adults and children)

• An integral robust solution to reduce the potential for misuse or vandalism and ensure long-term reliability

• Fully complies with Building Regulations and can be incorporated into all BSF design applications

• Achieves 30 RwdB making it ideal for classroom entrance doorsets

• Cannot be forcibly removed, negating the cost of ongoing replacement

• Offers wide choice of design aesthetics to the specifier/designer

• Modern design and smooth line profile is ideal for design-led environments

• Provides creative freedom and flexibility for specifiers and designers

Fingers and small hands can be trapped in the hinge edge of doors with relative ease, as shown, sometimes causing painful and damaging injuries.

Sentinel prevents the trapping of fingers on both sides of the door leaf at the pivoted edge.

reduced swing doorsets for accessibility

P. 28

Introducing Pivette

Doors are easy to operate manually, needing only light pressure to move aside and well out of the way. Complete, factory-finished, pre-hung doorsets are supplied as standard including frames, track and suspension systems, for straightforward installation and reliable operation. Pivette doorsets are available with finishes, colours and ironmongery to match other Leaderflush Shapland doorsets specified on a project.

Pivette doorsets are particularly suited to healthcare and other buildings where space is at a premium or accessibility important. Pivette offers cost-effective solutions to a wide range of design problems presented by Part M of the Building regulations, The Disability Discrimination Act and the newly updated BS 8300:2009. As stated within BS8300:2009, reduced swing doorsets reduce the extent to which the door swings into the room and corridor, facilitating movement in and out of rooms such as WCs and bathrooms.

the Pivette range is based on a unique design of two-leaf articulated door, developed to minimise door swing area whilst maximising clear opening width

Why choose Pivette

The sliding, folding mechanics of this doorset make it a versatile solution where functionality, access and space are important considerations:

• Uses only one third of a conventional door swing area

• Maximises opening area for optimum accessibility

• Straightforward to install and easy to operate

• Outward opening WC doors in houses, substantially reducing the corridor width

• Doors opening onto landings, leaving access space to comply with Part K

• Lobbies with space required for wheelchair access between doorways

• Sanitary accommodation doors opening outwards onto circulation space

• Emergency release option

Emergency release Pivette

This doorset incorporates a retractable guide bolt that overrides the standard mode of action, allowing the door to open away from an obstruction. Emergency Release Pivette is ideal for WCs and other areas where access might otherwise prove difficult in an emergency, such as a fallen person obstructing the conventional opening arc. This system is available for outward opening doorsets.

Fire resistance

Pivette doorsets are available either non-rated or FD30 (30 minutes) in accordance with BS 476: Part 22: 1987 and are BWF-CERTIFIRE accredited. FD30 doorsets are supplied with a free-swing electromagnetic door closer which should be interfaced with the fire detection system. In day to day use the door remains easy to operate but, in the event of a fire or power failure, will automatically close. Intumescents are fitted to the frames of FD30 doorsets in the factory.

Pivette widths

The sizes shown below are offered as standard, with structural opening sizes of 1110mm and above meeting the requirements of Approved Document M and BS8300. Other non-standard widths can be accommodated where technically possible. The maximum door height available is 2040mm.

installation

Ideally, Designer Range doorsets should be considered as late second fix items, not for installation until all ‘wet trades’ have finished.

Despite ISO 9000 procedural disciplines and the BWF-CERTIFIRE third party product auditing, doorsets could still fail to meet basic performance criteria through defective installation. We strongly recommend that all doorsets are fitted by an Installation Partner or a member of FIRAS. Where fire protection is required, it is essential that any voids between the back of the frame and the structural opening be protected in accordance with BS 8214.

For a list of our Installation Partners, please visit www.leaderflushshapland.co.uk/installationlist.php.

on-site Great care is taken to ensure that all Leaderflush Shapland products arrive on-site in perfect condition:

• Door leaves are shrink-wrapped with corner protection

• Single leaf doorsets are dispatched assembled complete with spacers to support the frame

• Doorsets incorporating paired leaves are separated prior to despatch for easy handling

• Delivery is in covered lorries

Knock-down frames

For ease of delivery, unloading and on-site handling, Leaderflush Shapland can supply certain frame types in knock-down format.

Each frame will be individually wrapped and labelled with assembly instructions included.
