Basic Presentation Tips
• The purpose of a presentation is to present information
• Define objectives of your presentation clearly in order to match the design to purpose
• Create a logical flow to your presentation
• Make your presentation readable
• Keep things simple (animation, slide transition, sound effects)
• Try to cut down the number of slides

Content Relevancy
All graphics should be appropriate and relevant to the message

to the current topic?

Slide Consistency
Use the same color scheme
Use the same slide background
Repeat visual elements
Do not place graphics or text arbitrarily
Group related objects together
Avoid overcrowding your slide
Note that viewers scan the slide:
From left to right
From top to bottom
Slide Balance
• Formal slide balance
– The graphic on the right balances with the text on the left
• Informal slide balance
– The title and graphic in opposite corners provide balance to the slide

• Contrasting colors make slides more readable:
Dark on light
• Contrasting colors make information more memorable

• Use one type of the text alignment or another – Do NOT mix them
• Do not use both Center Alignment
• and Left Alignment on the same page

Text Style
Use appropriate fonts
• Recommended:
– Fonts: Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, Georgia
– Bold to emphasize some words
• Not recommended– Times New Roman, Algerian, Century Schoolbook,
Courier New, Chiller and similar– ALL CAPS
– Italic
– Underline

• Try to use no more than six lines per slide
• Use approximately six words per line
– Use key words to describe key points

Charts
• If possible, use charts to replace text
– Example of a good chart

Pictures and Graphics
• Use pictures, clip art images and graphics wisely
• Use white space to isolate text and images
• Repeat design elements to make them icons
which connote meaning
• A couple excellent pictures are better
than many poor ones
